I didn't have loans but it was still a struggle trying to find well-paying attorney jobs. No law school is worth taking out $200k+ of loans, especially anything under #20 in national ranking.

This episode should be pasted on your homepage. It is sad. Debt is crushing young lawyers.

I agree with everything y’all say EXCEPT for privatization. That’s not going to solve anything except make is more predatory and harder for minorities and the poor. Thanks Nathan and Ben for all y’all do.

Hi guys, I live in Canada and most of the law schools here are way cheaper than the US (with the exception of the top 3 schools in Canada which average 30k a year or more in tuition costs). After listening to your podcasts, I decided that I would not go to law school at all unless I could get a scholarship with a high LSAT score. I'm content with studying for the LSAT and trying to get the highest score I can. Whether or not I go to law school, it will depend on tuition and scholarships. Even if I don't go to law school, walking away with the competence and skills one gets from getting a high LSAT score will pay dividends. Malcolm Gladwell showed that it wasn't the school that made you lots of money, it was the kind of person you are if you got accepted into these top schools. He compared two groups of people, both of whom got accepted into Harvard but one decided not to go. Both groups showed no difference in lifetime earnings.

If she wanted to save the environment, she could have helped a lot more by picking trash up the side of the street than taking out 250k for a law degree

How is it not fair to give scholarships to overly qualified applicants? That’s the most fair possible distribution of merit scholarship. Overqualified applicants DESERVE MORE MERIT SCHOLARSHIPS than under qualified applicants.

I would say it’s not even worth it to attend HYSCCN. Those big law jobs are not assured even at those schools, and those jobs at big law firms have atrocious burn out rates. Not to mention, the hours that you work as junior associate at one of those firms amount to the same income as someone else just working 2-3 jobs at the same time for the same hour amount. Law school is just a terrible bet all around.

This video explains what is really going on in modern US law schools. These schools pay law professors, Deans, and administrative personnel hundreds of thousands of dollars a year, while student go hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt to finance it. They are able to do this by claiming to be "non-profits". Meanwhile, the job market for new JD's is godawful. . .most of these "student loans" will never be repaid. Many law school grads have great difficulty finding any kind of job at all, let alone a well-paid position at a law firm.

I agree. I just recommended our workshop students to take a look at this video. I would not recommend going for full tuition cost.

Historically Law school students were only demographics of white men that came from wealth. Today the demographics in law school have changed in various ways, like gender, ethnicity (etc). However, majority of law school students come from a home where both parents have an estimated annual income of 150k+ annually. Professions that involve med school, law school, dentistry are not accessible to all demographics.

So it’s still separated by class..? Unfortunately, yeah. Most lower class people who do actually end up getting the scholarships and school grades to go to law school also normally worry more about profitable job opportunities rather than the public good. Aside from the fact it requires grad school and massive debt. Law is kind of fickle and usually reserved for people who want to work for big companies or people who don’t mind making peanuts relative to the public work they do. So, obviously, most lawyers will turn out of the corporate shills like their parents before them.

I think the issue can be helped by setting a minimum LSAT score across the board. Students must score a 165 or better to attend law school.
@aalegalfocus
@aalegalfocus 2 года назад
Good idea but that'll never happen. The lousiest law schools market themselves as being so charitable & for everyone, because they'll admit anyone with a pulse & student loan 💰 money.

Why? My LSAT was 151 I got into a TEIR 4 law school. Worked for several law firms making 50k or less for 6 years. year seven, applied to a firm making 168k. You won't start off making great money. That's the problem with everyone. They think the money comes from school. The money comes with years of experience. You will make money but it takes time. No matter what school you attended or your LSAT score. Experience brings money. That's guaranteed.

You want to artificially limit the amount of people that can go to college. So limit it to the wealthy. This test is normally something that needs to be learned for most people and that generally requires a lot of money. The same applies to college in general. It’s like limiting people by SATs. So if you cant afford SAT tutors and books, tough shit I guess? Yeah, this is a ridiculous idea. You also won’t find the wealthy or upper class filling up our public roles like public defenders and DAs offices. How about we increase federal grants/forgiveness for certain kinds of legal work? Such as the kinds public defenders, DAs and non profit lawyers get.

Who specifically is charging more to black applicants??? For what reasons, please explain more in debt. How are the schools or financial institutions racist, because black people on average have higher loan balances??? People take out different loans for many reasons. Shameful??? The only shame could be that people took out more money than they should have without thinking it through. You generalize with no facts. The dude on the left comes across as a racial panderer to black and brown people like you are smarter than them and better. Like you are the white knight savior. You gave no specifics...just BS. Schools are charging blacks more? I think the guy on the right, had second thoughts on your pandering. Try whites and Asians must score higher on SAT's and LSAT's to be admitted than black and brown people as with Yale and Harvard.
