This video was fantastic! So many good points. I'll throw a few out as well: 1. Store your equipment in an unheated place preferably with a roof. If you store your blowers in a heated shop, the cold snow will stick to all the warm parts when you take it out to work. 2. If you're not using your tractor, and it's just waiting for the next storm, keep the battery on a trickle charger. 3. Always keep starting fluid close to your tractor in case the carburetor dries out between storms. 4. The night before you are supposed to have a storm go out to your tractor and start it to make sure the carb isn't dried out and fuel is getting sucked to the engine (most tractors like this have vacuum fuel pumps that can be tough to get fuel flowing if things dry out between storms). Make sure all your belts, pulleys, augers, and impeller are free of ice that may have formed and can damage or throw your belt. If you prep it right, the only thing you'll have to do the next morning when you go out to blow snow is turn the key. 5. When you're done blowing snow, brush stuck snow off your equipment 100%. When you leave it on there that's how you get ice formed up and when you go to use it next time you'll have parts frozen in place. RedneckComputerGeek hit it 100% nail on the head here. Garden tractor snow blowers can be fast, efficient, and a lot of fun to use. But they are HIGH MAINTENANCE. You need to pay close attention to them before you use them, while you're using them, and when you're done using them or you are going to be stuck on your back in the snow changing belts and shear pins.

Thank you for being an ardent student and generous teacher of home level driveway management of snow clearance! I've been at this for 8 years in western NY not far from what lake Erie dictates. Every situation has a set of solutions, you have hit upon so many! Thank you for extending your ability to deal with what the winter deals US. I bet you are a Democrat.

Good useful information. I have a 150 foot gravel driveway. I plow with my garden tractor and then skim off the edge with my snow blower so i dont have a banking issue. Seems to make the job easier

My driveway is about 500 feet x 20foot wide with a 40ft x40ft parking area at the end I run a 2005 simplicity conquest 20hp with loaded v-bar/ag tires in the rear and 4 ribs up front I have chains for it but never need them because each rear tire weighs 135lbs (80lbs of non freezing liquid ballast in each tire) I run a 2020 42inch 2stage simplicity snow blower on the front. The blower impeller is modified for zero housing clearance via pieces of conveyor belting bolted to the impeller. The original 2stage factory blowers for that tractor were very heavy and hard to lift... the newer version has a lift assist built in making that heavy blower light on the lift handle I upgraded my electric clutch, idler, and blower pulleys originally a belt for B-belt pulleys making the belts last an entire season. Although the weak point of my tractor is still the battery so I built a rear mount battery box and put a group 31 battery with 900+cca in it. My battery box add on has jumper ports and a power disconnect switch and I have a slip in dummy battery I put in place of the factory battery so that the group 31 battery is the only one in the circuit and I use this tractor for jumping the rest of my tractors including both my 41 Ford 2n 1/2 year grille and my 46 Ford 9n. As well as my numerous cub narrow and wide frame and simplicity garden tractors.

i used to have a two wheel drive truck.. i usually pack snow in the bed after snow storms.. the extra weight helps with traction and when the warm hits , it just melts away.............

Most anything Murray or MTD made in the last 40 years is entry level cheap equipment whether it’s a tractor or attachment. So if you have one, upgrade to something better whenever you can. Winter 2003/2004 I plowed driveways with a commercial Toro 117 Groundsmaster which I adapted a Warn 54” ATV blade. With the addition of ag/lug drive tires and extra weights it did fairly well as it could turn around quickly.

Great vid. For me, Couples inches, wet snow=plow truck 12 in or more=walkbehind. I'm planning on restoring a 40in Bercomac and installing it on a MTD. I too noticed that one of the tires tend to get caught in the snow and bend the wheel 90 degrees. Very hard to turn. Planning on adding wheel stops. What would be the best front tire upgrade for winter?

Although you have to move much slower a blower attachment is far more efficient in the long run, especially if your machine has enough power to run it properly. None of the relief cuts are necessary with the blower as you will be throwing the snow over the cut line and if you lay out your pattern properly and have it so you are blowing the snow out the side instead of pushing it straight ahead you won't have the creeping snow berm, I've had piles 9 foot deep and only lost a foot of my area. As for the manual lift jacking up your right arm, hook a winch up to the bitch, push of a button up push of a button back down same as a plow.

Too bad you don't have 1980s cub cadets because they will spoil you. A nice 82 series hydro with power steering power lift and a 54 inch power angle plow and a cozy cab is the dream.

I have been thinking about getting a plow blade for my lawn tractor, and only using the snow blower to blow the piles of snow out of the way. You can go faster with a plow, you have to go slow with a snow blower...so it would be better to plow once or twice then use the blower to move the snow farther away from the driveway. ****With a snow blower DO NOT aim the chute at anything you don't want broken...a rock, or several rocks will break windows, damage your vehicle, etc....also injure someone nearby. I have a Kubota BX2680 but I do not have it setup for snow removal since I have a blower for my lawn tractor....however I could get a rear blade and use it for snow removal if I wanted. I should I guess because the snow blower is only good for 8+ inches of snow, its a 3 stage blower so lighter snowfalls the blower don't work as well as you can't really go fast enough for it to suck the snow into the impeller fast enough to blow it far enough away.

Hey i have an issue with my mower. It is old enough, that it has the spark plug wire, the ground to shut it off and 2 that is for lights or charging. I can't figure out which one is to charge the battery and which is for acc or lights.

I use filtered used peanut oil in a garden sprayer the cost is free after the initial purchase of the garden sprayer and filtered funnel. It's biodegradable and non toxic plus its recycling a waste product it also keeps my impeller paddles nice and lubed up as they throw slush, salty water, ice, and snow... the zero tolerance impeller paddle mod is amazing

Thanks,while I live in Texas and a 2 inch snow fall shuts down the roads it is helpful. Do you use any salt ? I KNOW corrosive etc but here it is the best, for what we have. Also c a n you show a close up picture of tbe mount on the blade ? I made a box blade and am thinkibg about making a blade for moving dirt and some gravel. Thanks for tbe videos

Good and easy to get parts for. Weak link is 4th gear in a clutch dump. And if you torque up on 1st to hard it will blow the input gear. That being said every transaxle has its plus and minus.

HAHA, snow blower people....that's how I look every time I use the blower on my lawn tractor. I have suitcase weights on the back of my lawn tractor, damn thing is so light weight that with the blower on the front end, you get no traction without the weights. Up to 4" of snow I don't need the chains, anything more than that I install the tire chains. I started out this season breaking 3 shear pins as well....this is the first year I've broken a shear pin surprisingly enough. The battery in my lawn tractor is apparently 5 years old...usually about the amount of time I get out of one...went out to start it yesterday and although it started, it did so barely. Guess before mowing season I'll have to put a new battery in it LOL. Those jump packs are so nice to have, don't have to have another vehicle around and get out jumper cables. With my Kubota 5-6 seconds on the glow plugs and it takes right off regardless of the weather, the lawn tractor doesn't like anything below about freezing LOL. Why don't you use the snow blower and blow that snow back farther from where your truck is? That's what I'd do. The plow works great, but having the snow blower to get those banks of snow out of the way.
@redneckcomputergeek

Do to my junking habits and kids being around. I only use the snow blower on known clear walkways. The plow hit wire or a toy it is what it is. You hit that stuff with a snow blower and R rated words come into play.
