As a child, I remember going on the through train from Aberystwyth to London Euston. From Aberystwyth it was hauled as far as Shrewsbury by a 37. At Shrewsbury it was replaced by a 47 as far as Wolverhampton where it was replaced either with an 86 or an 87. The 37 was always the one with the most character.

Pretty sure the horns on a split headcode 37 are behind the grilles on the nose above the headcode boxes rather than on the roof.

Love the 37s and the sound they make, as does my dad. The horns aren't on the roof as they are located inside the loco's nose, which you can tell because there is a pair of circular horn grilles on each end for the sound to come out of. Only the 37s built with split headcode boxes and access doors had the horns in the nose; the later ones without end doors had the horns to the roof for some reason.

Regarding the horns some of the class had them mounted internally so it could represent one of them.

The spilt box version he has the horns was mounted internally, you can see the grills above each headcode box for them, the centre headcode 37s they were mounted on the roof

I notice that your model sports the "arrows of indecision" made famous by British Rail who, most often used to display boards at stations displaying; "British Rail regrets to announce - all trains running as normal."

Good video, no roof horns on your Lima 37 though as they are behind the circular grills on the front of the nose (phase 1 class 37 with phase 2 & 3’s having horns on the roof like your green one).. The aerials would be to show it is an RETB fitted loco and the Highland Region sticker on the cab side’s are for Inverness’s based locos

Hi Lawrie, brilliant video, looks very nice! I'm a big fan of the 37s. That particular one (split headcode front) has horns in the nose, not on the roof. Centre headcode has them one the roof (as with the Hornby one).

Your analogy of Lima is perfect. My first ever 00 gauge loco as a kid was a Lima class 27. The detail wasn’t great, but it had a massive weight inside and was industrially built, and would pull everything I had. My Hornby Class 55 was the next one down, but even after I had put a 1” or so head bolt inside it with multiple nuts run onto the thread for extra ballast, the Lima 27 was still the boss.

@Meengineer100

The 37s are the most superior diesel locomotives ever built in my opinion. The split box 37s were built with horns inside the nose rather than mounted on the roof (you can see the circular grills high up on the front of the nose which cover them). Regarding the 37/9s, only 6 were rebuilt of which 3 survive today. 37906 is being restored at the Battlefield Railway, 901 is close to returning to the mainline and 905 is, I believe, stored at Leicester. 905 and 906 have Ruston engined which I think are 4 cylindered and sound really nice. Great video as always, I enjoy seeing the retro models. I like the fact they are still able to run decades after being built, much like the real ones themselves. :)

Now I feel really old. The Walsall - Water-Orton line ran alongside our school and a procession of MGR hopper trains and various other freight hauled by classes 25, 24, 20's in multiple, 31, 37, 40, 44, 45, 46, 47 and 56 trundled past all day long. The 47's and 56's were being turned out with wrap round yellow ends, large logo and large numbers in corporate blue at the time (must have been around 1980?). Highly practical for us because it meant we could even note the numbers down while we were in English Literature class 😂. I still managed to get a B in my O level exam... I think there'll likely be a few large logo 80's diesels on my future garden and garage layout. It'll make a change from filthy Black 5's and 9F's.

I've always regarded the Class 37 as the british Version of the american GP-7/GP-9...basically indestructible and still going strong despite being a "first generation," diesel that replaced steam. Ironically enough it was the GP-7/9 for me that got me into diesels...along with some help from its ALCo analogue the RS-3.

Hornby still sell the Lima version in their cheaper Railroad range of models with upgraded motor to allow it to operate on DCC better and you can get one DCC with sound fitted. Still a great looking locomotive for its age. If you want get the next level in detail class 37 you need to get either a Bachmann, ViTrains or coming soon the Accurascale versions and judging by what has currently come from Accurascale their version will look excellent.

It is not unusual to see short trains with multiple locos up front, as Railtrack or whatever they are presently called, charge per train movement over the tracks so, if you had say 4 light locos to move, it would be cheaper to add them to an already scheduled short train, therefore having 5 locos on a short train.
