Layer Cake Battenberg Block

You might have already seen us make this block using a Jelly Roll - but today Katrina shows us how to make it using a Layer Cake. Using only 36 out of the 42 squares, you can choose exactly which ones you like most! Only measurement you need to remember is 2.5"!
You'll also need:
1 metre approx fabric for the border and 0.5 metre approx fabric for the fillet.

I am not clear on why to rotate and cut the next 2.5” off the opposite side. May I just cut 2.5” twice off one side, then turn it and cut the short two pieces from their same side?

By cutting from each side you get the pinked edges on the outside if the strips which get trimmed off. This makes it easier for many people to keep their seams straight.

Also, if she was using a directional print, she could get them all going the same way. If a it was a more involved print, she could end up with pieces reforming the picture in the original piece.

Rotating allows you to cut on your dominant side, reducing the risk of the ruler shifting, inaccurate cuts and injuries with rotary cutter. When you’re right handed and make your 1st cut on the right side, if you don’t rotate you have to reach across your body and over your left hand to cut the left side. So your posture isn’t ergonomically correct to make clean cuts.
