Good one Dave. Layering is a life saver. I don't like synthetics but tried some polypropylene long John's and they were warm. I am a 34 waist and bought 32-34 size and had to cut the elastic as it was far too tight which is no good (size up, like you said). Bought some darn tough socks and I want to know how effing tight these manufacturers think people need their clothing. There is a Danish bloke, Lars (ex-forces) who lives in Russia ('Survival Russia') who also talks of layering. He will put a sleeping bag inside another and put a goretex bivvy on the outside and he is dealing with -40 and worse. He has a mate called Vassily in Moscow who makes woolen hunting gear out of recycled Russian military greatcoats (Sukonka.co). I am hoping to get a woolen anorak from him for a good price. (It does get cold in parts of Britain but that may be overkill). Wool is my favourite but it can be heavy. It will keep you warm when wet and is hard to set on fire unlike these top of the range (expensive) plastic bag jackets. I have never been to New Zealand but you have a climate like ours I think. Looks like I wrote a novel haha
Lol, I like watching Lars' videos. He has a ton of knowledge. Hand in hand with wool goes a waterproof covering to stop it getting so heavy if wet, like you were saying. Thanks Chris.
Great video. How do you find the sizing on that ranger shirt? I want to order one but can’t find anywhere that has an actual size chart with true garment measurements
My Ranger Shirt is size Medium. I usually wear Large shirts but the Medium Ranger Shirts seem to be cut a little larger. I can wear a woolen layer under my Ranger and still not be too tight. A Medium Ranger Shirt seems to be a good size for a Large person. If in doubt it may be wise to buy your normal label size. It could possibly end up a bit big but that is more comfortable than too small. The Ranger Extreme Shirt is different to the Ranger, it has a lining. I was trying on new Swanndie's yesterday and the Ranger Extreme seems to be correct to their sizing (a Large Ranger Extreme would possibly be a good fit for a Large person).
