Layla Derek And The Dominoes Piano (C#) slow tutorial 

I'm sure that many of the people that post these piano tutorials do it with all good intentions, but unlike many of the other piano tutorials you don't play it too fast, you don't go off on tangents, and you don't constantly break the rythym with explanations. Now that I learned this I can't stop playing it ... Thanks man, Great job !!!

When I recorded this video I used my acoustic Yamaha U3 piano. I could not change the key, so the closest to the original was C# to me. Now I have a Yahama NU1, hybrid acoustic/digital piano and I can easily transpose the key to C keeping the same original tuning of the record. Those who want to play it in C at 440Hz are welcome, but this tuning will NOT match to the record. You need to pitch the tuning a bit higher (between C and C#). Game over for the key issue ... I hope!

To sickgreg, the only suggestion I feel to give is to learn the guitar chords and then try to transfer them on the piano. Learn to listen the tunes and try them on the piano, without any fear. If you feel that your ears can turn the song you like into something you feel you can play, then go ahead. Cheers!!

I slowed down the video and I can see what keys he is pressing by carefully looking at the different reelection. I've never had piano lessons but know chords/scales/progressions from music theory, so it is a matter of practice practice practice. Always loved this coda and would tear up a lot of times listening, and now, maybe, playing.

It's already been stated, but what you hear on the record is neither C or C#, but somewhere in between. I prefer playing the song in C# as is shown in this video. Great job!

Having perfect pitch myself, I always found it troubling to not think about the pitch discrepancy in the original cut even though it is legendary. Still, it is one of my favorite songs of all time and I adore listening to it. Wikipedia is correct, the song is written and performed in D minor with the Coda in C, but the tape plays sped up, slightly low of Eb Minor in the main section and Db Major in the coda. I suppose a truly accurate performance of the tape would be impossible unless the piano was tuned a quarter tone sharp and the guitarists tuned off the piano. I tend to like it in the higher key closer to Eb Minor/Db Major in the end. Duane's solo just screams even more with that extra quarter tone higher in the stratosphere of his les paul. If you listen to the bootleg tape of him playing one of his 2 live shows with the Dominoes in Tampa, its right on the money at D minor. Maybe I'm secretly glad that the tape getting sped up (whether an accident or not) was what happened.

what look450 said. You not only play it "correctly" but keep the pace slow and there are no distractions or anyone babbling on so one can focus on the song. Always wanted to learn this, am looking at getting a (digital) piano, and have little patience reading music, though I can. MANY thanks!

Sounds better in this key than what the other videos are showing (I only know the tune from the movie), so I assume it's sped up like other movie music usually is..

it was recorded in c on layla original album...never has been in c# except on youtube....i tune pianos for a living for 45 years.....overtones are different in sharp keys

I listened to the song... then I went on the piano and found the tune was in C# or close to it. so I played it in C#. we can discuss C or C# and frankly I don't see the point. I already replied months ago to another comment about this. In C is also easier to play, that's fine. I like it better in C#. you might want to send me the music sheet with the chords in C so we make happy all those asking for the chords as well. cheers.

Does anyone have the chord sequence down that they can print out here? I have a problem in trying to remember the notes played, then turning to the piano to play them. Looks like the LH is playing octaves. No lousy comments please.

This is in the correct key. The "more accurate" version is NOT in the original key.....

Was reading that Rita Coolidge actually wrote the piano part and was shocked she never got writing credit.

...a real pain for the guitars trying to play along. With three guitar parts going through the song, do you really think they are playing in C#?
