LD Systems Maui 28 G3s vs Bose L1 Pro 16s. I'm not an audio engineer but have been DJing weddings for a LONG time. This is my honest review on the new LD Maui 28 G3s and comparison to my favorite DJ speakers the Bose L1 Pro 16s
Thanks for comparing these 2 speakers. I’ve been using the Bose pro 16’s for weddings for the last year and those speakers sound awesome!!! I added a Bose Sub 2 with these and man the bass is excellent!!!
Great info man.. is the bose 300.00 better then the LD28 g3? What is your thoughts on the jbl pro x? I love the bose but hate that wobble and also they are 600.00 more on a pair.. thanks for the help.
Can you make a video of how you set up your two Bose L1 Pro 16s for djing. Physical connections, stereo or mono, eq and or tonematch settings for best low end output, etc...
Great Vid! I’ve seen videos on here of DJs going from Bose to Ev 50’s and I’ll never understand it. Been using Bose for 10 years. I get it. It’s a preference but my Bose 16s and 32s are evolve killers! Yes I also own evolves. (No headroom)
Good video, I agree for the design of the Bose it would not have missed much to solidify. my insensetion in TPU helps but there is also the top part of the extension which has a 1 mm play. I did not find an effective solution without "breaking" the plastic extension to attach an additional support to it.
I don't know Bose's reason for the design, the only thing I think is, if a person rushes into the Maui, there's going to be material breaking on the sub and the column (rod and connector). Bose him he will simply undo and fall but hey .. it's still the big weak point in my eyes too ...
I bought a pair of the G3’s. I’ve also been an audio engineer for over 40 yrs & have never heard of blowing a speaker by unplugging anything. I’ve contacted the people who sold the LD’s & ask them to ask the LD rep. There again, they said the same thing. There’s more to this story of audio professionalism that failed than meets the eye with this story. Something isn’t right. These to me are probably the best bang for the buck. Bose sound great if u want to hear hi/fi sound but not a full sound. They also feed back so easily with a live mic it’s insane. The LD’s don’t. Low mids on the LD’s sound great & warm which is rare & not muddy. Bose have no low mids and what little of the low mids that do exist sound muddy from the bass cab.. My top picks for Column speakers. HK Audio, LD, RCF, EV, FBT. I’m ok with Bose but way to expensive for what you get. U pay for the name. just saying!
First of all thank you for watching. I really appreciate it. All I can say is what I (and 140 ish people at the venue) experienced. It was the mid event and the dance floor was packed, I was playing at about 95-100dbs (the reason I know that is my apple watch app kept warning me about the high volume is hurting my ears). The videographer who was ready to leave and "didn't want to bother me while I was mixing" decided to unplug his recording device (not sure on the make and model of this device) and when he did there was a VERY LOUD POP, the entire room looked at me and in return I looked at the videographer and said WTF! After that the same speaker this happened on was now showing a constant "Clipping" light. The other speaker was fine no issues. The next day at the event that same speaker (I know because I label my speakers) powered off after playing for only 15mins. Now it won't even power on. So are you saying this is non related to the cord being pulled out and it's a coincidence? Really??
Agreed… I’m currently using two of Bose pro 32 for home karaoke set up, yes I don’t need all that power but I do need it to look decent in my living room ( the pro 8 & 16 is just plain ugly in design ) the Bose are missing a lot of lower mid, there are plenty of mid-high and rumbling from the sub. The lower mid aren’t there with the 32 small speakers in the column. The feedback are notoriously to the max !!! I’m looking at these 28g to replace the Bose. Hopefully the sound will be more full range & feedback can be tame.
I also found the Bose to be v muddy/ boomy in the low end.. I tested them and was immediately turned off. Conversely the 28 g3s were instantly impressive , they may not be as loud ? But the quality of the sound is insane … very tight low end and accurate overall impression of the music
I have the pro 16. I’m using love it where can I get that adapter? It’s very important because I move a lot with my stuff contact information. It would be great GM.
Gread vid! been looking for someone to compare to EV50s, which i have had for quite a few years now. Would you consider this a good upgrade from EV50s if I were to sell those eventually? Dont care about the weight too much, just need overall sound improvement and aesthetics is also important, as the EV50s paintjob by now have seen better days, and i just want something new myself :) Also, will these go lower than EV50s on the bass in your opinion? thx!
Yes, I would consider this an upgrade, The Bose L1 Pro 16s and the. Maui 28s are both superior in overall sound to the EV 50s in my opinion. I didn't notice that much of a bass deference between the Maui's and the EVs but the Bose is much deeper. Thanks for watching!
Have you compared them to JBL PRX One? I am currently looking for column speakers at the 129dB range. Will use them for DJing and will need more kick from the sub. These 3 speakers are on my list Would really appreciate your opinion Thanks!
Yes I have, When I bought my Bose L1 Pro 16s I was actually going to the store to buy the JBL PRX ones and the sales guy asked if I've heard the new Bose. I compared EV 50s, Bose L1 Pro 16s and the JBL PRX ones and the JBLs were the least impressive. This is coming from a DJ that has used JBL speakers for over 20yrs!! Not anymore at least not for Column speakers.
Great video, thx man. Fun fact: Maui con: (120 degrees) actually works perfectly for me since I am using Shure in-ear monitors and trying to protect my ears so less sound = better. Hope that makes sense.
Like the setup you have with the Maui's. The white definitely looks classy, and your whole set up being white gives it a clean professional look. I agree that the White looks good and seperates you from other DJ's, and yes safer. Helps give a visual impact with the sound. As for weight, a good 2 wheel cart is the answer (air filled tires).
I have the Bose l1 model s the sound is crystal clear I had them for 10 years and yes I did sample other brands , it is worth the money , I did purchased the tone match due to the l1 lock of inputs
Damn! Nice catch, I would say that the bass is better than the EV 50s (same punch style) but not quite the level of the Bose room shaking sub lows. Something about the racetrack shaped sub in the Bose that really makes it perform well.
Thank you for this helpful video… I too was looking for a more robust build… but I’ll probably get the Bose because of the sound and bass performance (even though I’ve not heard the Maui’s in person).
Same thing happen with my 44G2's when the video guy unplugged and I ask him not too. LD did replace the system for free. My 44G2's are awesome larger weddings (200 peps). I have 4 of the EV50's and 2 EV30m and I love them too and they all have their place.
Thanks for watching, I'm not sure what you are doing wrong. Is there a reason you're not using a controller/mixer? I don't use a laptop plugged directly into the Bose so I have no experience with that setup sorry.
Maui build and sound is great but the quality of the small speaker are cheap in 4 year you will have to replace them if not early it also depends on the exposure to the elements just like your car speakers the FOAM lille material around the edge will disingrade
Sorry but this isn't the correct information. The specs on both systems show the LD to have more power, so I would say something else maybe on the gain staging wasn't quite right.@@jpwpro
The LD is significantly louder than the bose.. at least directionally. LD is known for early warning clipping. Bose adds some speaker compression before the limiter hits. The LD is also has a warmer, fuller sound across the spectrum where Bose, while missing alot of midrange warmth.. has that "everywhere" sound magic that is pretty impressive and may be why the host thinks its louder as he is mixing from an angle where bose may disperse better. They are both pretty impressive.. but to say the bose is louder even if it's your "opinion" is not accurate both in specs and real world tests. I am a live performer so i may be biased when it comes to a warm, "live" full range "pa" sound. Definitely LD wins here for directional volume and full range tone, but Bose even coverage is still king in that regard. Thanks for posting your opinions.
I've been using the ld 28g 3 and they blow away the bose 16 for my rockin Duo the bose sound plastic while the ld 28g 3 sound great and way louder than the bose 16. The ld 28 is differently heavy just the tops for one side are around 40 lbs.
@jpwpro I'm in a Duo. we both sing and play guitar with backing tracks. We don't play Metal. We are a cover Duo, so we play just about everything else. The ld's yellow light blinks.
Don’t get the 32. Had 2 sets with sub 2’s. Those towers are a magnet to drunk folk and they’re expensive. Plus they don’t look as neat as the 16. I sold mine and have gone back to point source RFC’s 910’s with 4 Pyrit single 12”subs that are run as singles or doubled up for larger rooms. I am pining for a column array again and like the 28g3 in white as I’m mainly a wedding DJ in the UK (full time job) but like you say they’re heavy and look a bit cumbersome with the square sub. I much prefer the look of the 11’s sleekness so may go for they and get a 15” sub for bigger rooms for centre fill. Where everyone says these systems run out of headroom its just the bass so everyone turns up the system and then it clips early. Add an extra centre sub and roll off a little bass on the column subs and its night and day difference and get a couple more DB’s which makes a big difference. Being in the UK and wedding central in the Lake District our rooms are much smaller that you guys have across the pond so can probably get away with a slightly smaller set…..or ill get some cheaper black ones like the HK polar etc 😂 I don’t know 😂😂🙈 Enjoyed the video & subscribed 🤷♂️🇺🇸🇬🇧
@@DjCraighowarth Thanks for the info! I really appreciate it and thanks for watching. I've noticed a lot of European DJs use the RCFs, I haven't heard them before. Along with subs are they good enough for larger events?
@@jpwpro absolutely. Like I say, I follow a few US DJ’s (you know the ones) and a lot of your rooms seem like much larger hall rooms where you really need 44g2’s and above. Nothing replaces the guts of point source PAs like separate tops & subs and RCF are amongst the very best. 9 series are great but you’d really want 912s or 932’s with 15/18” subs for larger rooms.
I just heard the Bose and the EV 50 side by side at guitar center and the EV 50 sounds better. The bose has a laid back rolled off soft sounding top end and I could hear the speakers compression when pushed and the EV 50 were more open detailed and louder
Common mistake for Portable Line Arrays is that they are not portable when their Line Arrays are not fitted to their Subs to carry in just one hand. If it's not portable then it's a wanna be portable Pa System. I'd rather bring my Big PA System if I want it to be louder
I have a cart so that doesn't matter to me. The BIG difference is the sound and room coverage (180 degrees vs 74-90 for a traditional speaker) and the sound is way better than any traditional speaker I've ever used. This is why I made the switch. Thanks for watching.
I have to disagree with this comment. I've had over 100 people in front of both sets of speakers in this review and I walked around to the other side of the dance floor (while filming my gig logs) and still very loud and can still feel the bass. I've done this at various sized venues. If that was an issue I would have put in in the Cons portion of my reviews. Thank you for watching! I appreciate your input.
$1699 each for the LDs & the EV 50s & Bose 16s are $1899 each. If there was a huge difference I would discuss price but they are all with in a few hundred dollars of each other. Thank you for watching!
