here is an attempt at explaining this whole "virtual energy tank" system WEC and IMSA use. The game seems to mirror the real world system pretty closely. (unlike iRacing, which completely ignores it) First the background: with the introduction of LMH and LMDh regulations, there are various different styles of hybrid and non-hybrid cars racing against each other. As part of the BoP system, the rule makers want every car to have a chance at being competitive. So they needed to take away the fuel advantage a car with a big hybrid system would have. They also wanted cars with less efficient engines to be competitive, in order to avoid an expensive development race like the one that killed LMP1. According to the rules there have to be torque sensors in all the driveshafts, which are needed to measure the power output of every car. On the one side this is used directly to check that power is within BoP limits. Additionally: By mathematically integrating that power over time, these sensors can also be used to measure the total amount of energy sent to the wheels. It does not matter whether that energy comes from the combustion engine or the electric motors. Every time the car is powered forward, these sensors detect by how much, and they add up the amount of energy consumed for that. So the rules are set up such that your maximum stint length is determined not by how much fuel you have left in the tank, but by how much energy you have spent since your last pit stop. You have a certain budget of energy, a so called "virtual energy tank" (or "NRG" for some reason), and when that budget is used up (i.e. when your virtual energy tank is empty) you need to make a pit stop and "refill" that tank. Refilling the NRG tank simply works by connecting the fuel hose. There is a sensor in the car that detects when the fuel hose is connected, and for every second it remains connected a certain amount of energy is added to your budget, your allowance if you will. There is no physical transfer of energy, you don't charge the batteries or anything like that. It is just a number in a computer system that slowly goes up the longer the car is standing there with the hose connected. So when you leave the pits, the amount of energy in your virtual tank determines how long you are allowed to drive before you need to make another pitstop. In terms of strategy it is not really different than the classic style of refueling. When the NRG tank is empty you need to pit (or actually slightly before that. You get a penalty if you run it completely empty), the more you put into your tank the longer you can drive, the more you add during a pitstop the longer that stop is going to take, and of course you can not fill in more than the maximum allowance. And if you have a driving style that conserves energy, for example by rounding the corners to carry more momentum, by lift-and-coast-ing, etc., then your NRG tank will last longer and you can drive more laps between pitstops. Turns out the techniques needed to save energy are a lot of the same as are needed to save fuel. Speaking of fuel: The cars oviously still run on actual liquid fuel. And during the pitstops more fuel has to be added to the car. But the rules are no longer concerned with that, since performance equality is already achieved through the NRG system. So on the fuel side, teams are pretty much allowed to do whatever they want. There is no limit as to how large the tank can be and no limit as to how fast they refuel the cars (as long as certain safety rules are being observed). If they wanted to, they could do it like F1 and start the race with all the fuel they are going to need for the entire race. Of course nobody is doing that due to weight reasons, but they would be allowed to. But since the fuel hose needs to be attached to the car to "refill" the NRG tank, it makes sense that liquid fuel is being added at the same time. The fuel hoses are sized such, that adding the liquid fuel is faster than adding energy. Once all the liquid fuel is in the car, they just keep the hose connected for a couple of seconds longer until the NRG tank is full as well. All of this applies to all cars entered in the Hypercar class in WEC as well as the GTP class in IMSA. Now in terms of "how does the pitstop menu in LMU work?" I don't know exactly, i have not played it yet. But from what i have seen, it seems that: - You dont set the amount of NRG and fuel to be added, but the amount you want your car to be topped up to. The amount you want to leave the pits with. The game then knows how much to add, in order to get you there. - you select how much NRG you want. This determines how long the stop is going to take and how many laps you are then allowed to drive. - you set the MAXIMUM amount of fuel you want in the car. When that number is reached, fuel flow is stopped, even though the stop still continues to add more NRG. - However: if the selected amount of NRG is reached first, your stop seems to be finished. It does not actually wait until more fuel is added. This makes sense, because your NRG is going to run out sooner then your fuel anyways (unless you severely underfueled the car on the previous stop). In general you don't want to add too much liquid fuel to your car, since it does not give you any additional range and you want to keep the weight low. But adding a few liters more has no effect on the lenght of your pitstop. So if you want to be conservative, just leave the fuel value rather high. NRG (or "Virtual energy" as it is called in the menue) is what you really need to play around with, just treat that like you are used to with fuel on a normal car.

Thank you! I watched the Daytona 24 hrs and didn't really understand how teams like Porsche kept getting energy usage penalties. Makes a lot more sense now.
@hannesgroesslinger
@hannesgroesslinger 6 месяцев назад
@@austinobambino1360 IIRC the penalties Porsche were getting at Daytona were for exceeding max power output. As i briefly mentioned, the torque sensors in the driveshafts also measure the exact amount of power that is sent to the wheels. At any given moment that power may not exceed a certain limit, which is determined by BoP (usually somewhere around 500 kW which is 683 bhp) The combustion engine is capable of reaching that power on its own. So when hybrid is deployed, the ICE has to be throttled down so that combined output does not exceed max power limits. Porsche seemed to have some software issue where the ICE did not get throttled properly and the combined power output exceeded the limit for a few seconds.

I’d 100% watch a second channel, regardless of what it would be. I just like watching you enjoy doing things, the vibes are great. I don’t want to put more on your plate if you’re already busy, though. I want you to sleep, sleep is good. That being said, if you would have fun, do it. That’s the best part of this community, watching you have fun doing your thing. You do you, on camera or not.

Just touching on the subject you mentioned at 20:42, it would be amazing to see a channel dedicated to cars and still getting to see sim content on this channel. With the amazing opportunities you have had so far and the fleet of cars you currently own, personally I would love to see more content around the cars and your passion for them.

Those flag displays are in terribly locations… epically the Porsche GTE… add in how bright they are at night combined with the steering wheels and that’s madness. I think those two things are something they need to sort out with brightness adjustments at a minimum. I know I’d be going in to options to turn off the wheel at that point since the hud has all the info you need that’s on the wheel

@@Joshuastraughan it’s not really though, most have them lower so it’s not obstructing anything, even the Porsche. There might be a few teams that do it, but not many, and where there’s not even so much as head tracking, opting for one of the more out of the way locations is probably the smarter move

Virtual energy is the percent of max fuel that you will have in your tank at the end of the pit stop. Near the end of your race, you have Virtual Energy set to 60% and max fuel set to 40L. So when you pitted, you had a total of 24L in your tank (60% of 40L is 24L). I agree, this is F'ing dumb. Doesn't matter if this game is trying to be real life. People playing these games are not real race car drivers, nore can they chat with the engineer over coms to figure things out...

I mean it ain't that hard to understand if you just read what is onscreen, now the whole % based thing sure, but Jimmer couldn't even comprehend what Max means.. You can't really complain about a sim simming things imo. But yeah the game could instead have a Pitstop tutorial or a tutorial how NRG and fuel works and how all of that works with power mapping

@deesee76
@deesee76 5 месяцев назад
@@vetlerradio Clarity is the main issue. Less so in this game, but for others, it's definitely subpar straight with no configuration. iracing works well and crytsal clear. Games like Automobilista 2 takes a lot of tweaking for me things approach in the horizon. Using OpenXR has helped it aint supported in F1 2023 and just a blurry mess. ACC is ok (I play via Virtual Desktop or OpenXR). I am running a top of line PC (4090, 7800X3D), use both wired (10Gbps USB C) and Wifi 7 on 6Ghz band and have tried Virtual Desktop and Oculous Debug Tool and cranked everything to the MAX. So it's definitely not the hardware...
