Getting the bat aligned with the lead arm allows the barrel to work through the zone properly. The lead arm should act as a lever but when the bat gets misaligned, the force has to work across joints of the arm instead of along them. This can lead to a lot of rollovers, difficulties driving the ball the other way, and trouble adjusting to different pitch locations. You don’t necessarily have to get the bat and lead arm aligned in your stance but it should get there as you load.
One thing I didn’t mention in the video is that we don’t seem to see many issues when there is slight misalignment with the bat being MORE vertical than the lead arm. The troubles arise when the misalignment occurs because the bat is LESS vertical than the lead arm.
