This was a wonderful tutorial. I noticed you barely touched on the belladonna drops for the eyes. Let us not forget lead for coloring our hair darker, copper arsinate as dye for the clothing, and the subtle use of opiates to get you through the day. How any proper lady survived passed their 20s is a miracle in itself.

I googled it and found a paper saying women have lower blood lead levels on average and can tolerate more lead and arsenic. www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16996054 I wonder if that is a result of toxic makeup creating selective pressure.

Another well-known modern use for lead was in petrol, to stop "knocking" in car engines, and in that case we were sort of _lucky_ that they went with tetraethyl lead, rather than the other alternative they were considering: _dimethyl cadmium_.

Older artist friend of mine who was 86 when he died about 2 years ago. He was born in 1931. He had a Victorian grandmother he remembered as a boy, who wore high collar necks, long dresses, and wore her hair up always. Her style hand't changed in a good while. He said she stayed out of the sun as much as possible, and would use rice powder to make herself look extra pale. Sounds safer to me than lead! :D

As a cosmetology student, I found this video highly entertaining and educational. If I may ask a question (since we're in the same ballpark): I'm interested in desairology. How should one go about getting into that particular field? How should one approach a funeral home (or, for that matter, who should one approach) about styling hair and performing other beauty services for the deceased? Thank you!

Yep! As an armature "Historian" for most of my life... studying my Irish AND Austrian-Hungarian-German heritages AND working at MANY Ren Faires and Festivals, I learned all about the "Lead Poisoning" that happened from the cosmetics of the 16th Century. But like Caitlin said there were OTHER Chemicals used that were also VERY BAD! They used "Belladonna" to make the eyes look BIGGER... which ALSO caused blindness...among OTHER things! Ahhhh the 16th century... SO Much fun! LOL :D

i just finished listening to your audio book. i love love loved it. im a youngish nurse. you left me in an existential quandry because we are not our bodies so when little old ladies call the funeral home to say things like 'im afraid that my body will rot'. i think yes my body will rot but i wont be there to see it. I'm not religous or even spiritual - I've got a degree in enviro science. i just wish you had made that distinction. It helps me not to fear death.

You have made me so much more comfortable with everything involving death. My mom was super religious and whenever I tried to talk to her about it, she told me to shut up. When my best friend was murdered when we were teenaged and when my best male friend died of a heroin overdose and just so being so sensitive to other people and animals’ loss and suffering, it has made me deal with suicidal depression, especially because I was raped as a child. Long story short, after my parents died, my brother would constantly torture me emotionally with talking about how they are nothingness and just being very negative. Finding you was one of the best things that has happened for me in a very long time. My dad also creeped me out saying he didn’t want to be buried because worms and maggots would eat him. So he was cremated and I guess that’s why I want to be as well. And to disappear as much as possible. Plus I am trying to overcome my claustrophobia, but I know I will be dead and not aware of even being “trapped.”

Hah! Found the lead white, *and* a small jar of pure red cadmium powdered pigment! Pure pigments go that much further than pre-mixed paints for intensity of colour, toxicity, and danger from accidental inhalation during application. Now I'm thinking that the blue cobalt pigment I found as well would be lovely on the eyes, with ivory black as a liner. Sure, the ivory black isn't actually terribly dangerous like the others, but it's ethically questionable, as it's made from actual burnt ivory. Now off to become drop-dead gorgeous! Or just to drop dead.

Caitlin, would you consider doing an informational video about the options of The Cuddle Cot and Covercool devices that are becoming more available to families of deceased babies and loved ones? I recently came across information on the Cuddle Cot and felt many mixed emotions about it. While I think spending time with a deceased baby is so very precious and important, the length of time that this cooling mechanism allows the family to keep the deceased at home seems almost daunting and raises lots of questions (for me) about decomposition. I hold your opinions in such high regard and would love to hear what you think about these cooling options and any information you have on them! It seems access to them is currently more limited in the US than other countries and I'm wondering if this is the next big "thing" in dealing with loss and us finally beginning to release the stigmas we've developed about the overall handling of dead bodies. Is this the modern version of how things were done in the Victorian era regarding post mortem photography, keeping bodies at home, ect? I hope you see this and can offer your insight! Thanks!!

I have a book recommendation for you!! I was assigned to read The Faithful Executioner by Joel F. Harrington for a German history course I took last semester and it was one of the best books I read in 2016! I want to recommend it to everyone but surprisingly not that many people are interested in reading about a executioner from the Early Modern period of Germany. It's based on the executioner, Frantz Schmid's, journals, but Harrington explains them and provides context. I usually stick to fiction but I couldn't put this book down. :)

There’s a line in the Diary of Lady Murasaki from the early 1000s where she discusses her desire to leave court and have a few years as a nun before she goes too blind to read sutras. Oh, the other way women got very translucent/pale skin was by eating wafers of arsenic (Victorian era). Lead based make-up, arsenic wafers, mercury in your blush, arsenic in your clothing.....ah yes, beauty to die for.

Morbid Educational Parody - I think You deserve credit for also creating another sector of entertainment. Another reminder of why one should study ancient cultures and discover all the natural colors one could use for makeup and skin care like Egyptians did.
