Tony Award audiences are weird sometimes, from what I've noticed. Usually, they're very subdued, they'll applaud when a tony nominated musical goes into one of the "well known" numbers, but usually, they just listen and applaud at the end. There were a few tony award performances where the crowd got super into it (5 Guys Named Moe, Me and My Girl), but that was mostly due to performers either heading into the audience or the performers asking for help from the audience.
So torn Ankur this show. It's got AWESOME potential (due to its brilliant soundtrack), but Mr Cassidy's not got a very good voice, and the choreography... Sigh. The incomparable Ms Darlene Love was in it, and Ms Greenwich was also in it. I really wish someone would either Doo a new take on this (i.e.,re-write it), and use a male who's really got the required lung power - because to sing AND dance - BOTH at the SAME time is VERY strenuous. If they can't write a good book on this, them it should be reworked to tell the Goldstar story, which would obviously have Greenwich/Barry, but many others, including Mr Spector, and the legendary Wrecking Crew. Years ago, there's was a show - not necessarily the greatest, but it had an unbelievable number of sums which made everyone when to sing and dance; Beatlemania (I saw itaLOT of times🙄), and a show featuring the groups, musicians, writers, producers of Goldstar could Bea guaranteed hit.
