I'm a Portuguese speaker and after watching you talk it is amazing to me how close Catalan is to Portuguese - way more than Spanish. This is the first time I ever heard Catalan being spoken and I understood most of it. Great video!

Saludos, Laura. Este curso es excelente. Soy profesor de literatura iberoamericana y soy de Puerto Rico. Hace años visité Barcelona y quedé enamorado de la ciudad. Compré libros en catalán con la esperanza de algún día aprender la lengua y ahora que tengo tiempo y encontré tus videos lo estoy logrando. Te vi primero en un video de la gente de Liga Románica y luego vi un par de tus videos cortos, muy buenos. Este está excelente. En cuarenta minutos he aprendido ''un saco'' como dicen en italiano. Gracias mil. Me encanta tu estilo sencillo, agradable y tranquilo de enseñar. Como has solicitado sugerencias, mas adelante sugeriré algunos temas para los videos cortos. Gracias mil y mucho éxito.

If I may ask... WHY?? Just why?? So am I. So what need do you have here in So Cal, for such a bizarre language (that sounds more a dialect stolen from Spanish and French, than a language per se) that is only spoken in a tiny part of the planet? As I have, myself, studied rare languages (less spoken than this one) what is people's interest here? It baffles my mind!

How is it I never had a course in Catalan or French but can understand Catalan. Incredible! spoken it is like a mixture of french, italian, spanish, and portuguese.

Catalan, Occitan, Provençal, Arpitan, Gavot, Figon, Nissard, Ponente...were actually before French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese. We re the first idiomes from a mother tongue roman that was the bridge between the vulgar latin and the romance languages. From that coast, we have all a continuum in that sense, in the Gallo Roman world , from the north italian coast for exemple to the Iberic territories. With time there's a mutual influence from lets say depending the aera, Spanish, French, or Italian... But between the 9 th and 14th century you had also the whole emancipation in mediterranean of the troubadours from all thoses places, this made few echanges of words, as well than unfortunate invasions or commercial points. Thoses troubadours influenced the Spanish litterature, Portuguese, and first of all Italian, and french. Among thoses parameters, we can mention Sicilia, and even though not in troubadour movement the Corsican influenced Toscan.

Italian, Catalan = same difference. Both usurped from French + Spanish. Put both in a sack and shake like estas rebozando costillas de puerco y OPA! Instant Catalan language.

Nizzardo here, i share the same thing. We re all from the mother romance tongue. Especially on littoral, there s a continuum between Italia to Iberic lands.

@@Nissardpertugiu Many Italians are actually Catalonians: in the 12th century, there was a huge migration from Catalunya, Spain, to Italy. Ex: Guy Williams, who considered himself Italian was a full-blo0ded Spaniard. His last name? Catalano, Armando Catalano, meaning "from Catalunya". And all this time he was speaking American English with a delightful Spaniard's accent and he had no idea that he was really one of us, instead of one of you! 😀

Lenguas pa' perezosos, no? Trata el ingles, el frances o el ruso, y ya te valdra la pena, saber algo mas dificil y que seguramente te ayudara ganar dinero en tu futuro que todas esas lenguas que francamente son una perdida de tiempo. Mira: no hablo Italiano pa' nada, y con el Italiano que entiendo me communique' con una communa de Rumanos que a la epoca me salvo la vida aqui en EEUU. Sabes 2 de esas lenguas, ya las sabes todas (o las entiendes todas). Aprende el ingles que con esta podras tener un mejor futuro economico.

Greetings to my new Catalan teacher. Thanks again for the video here in New York City trying to learn how to speak Catalan it's a beautiful difficult language but it's not like Spanish I thought it was but it's not. And I heard it's older than Spanish but not older than basquez that's what the people of Barcelona told me when I was at Washington square Park in Manhattan playing chess with a guy and his wife visiting from Barcelona. Your language is amazing one day I'm going to learn it with your videos thanks again.

Hace bastante tiempo ya que vengo buscando información, cursos y bibliografía para aprender catalán y nada… hasta que vi este video. Esto es simplemente genial. Hola Sandra, fer una mica cada dia t'anirà molt bé per recuperar-lo i anar millorant. Coses que pots fer: per exemple, veure un vídeo al dia, escoltar música en català i cantar... És important dedicar-hi ni que sigui una miqueta de temps cada dia, però sense obsessionar-s'hi i amb materials i continguts que t'agradin :)

Je suis en train de regarder par curiosité. Je suis français, je parle l'italien j'ai commencé à apprendre le portugais il y a deux mois. Et je m'aperçois que j'arrive à comprendre à 90% tout ce que vous dites, ce qui me permet de comprendre l'ensemble de la trame de fond. Bien sûr, n'ayant pas appris la langue, je ne pourrais pas dire une seule phrase de moi-même, mais comprendre est assez facile.

Bah à la fin, tu vas tout confondre !! Tu veux faire quoi avec cette langue et le portuguais? Je suis en Californie; ici on appelle ca "Jack of all trades, master of none!" Y'en a pas beaucoup de gens qui puissent retenir toutes ces langues, hein! Surtout, si on ne PENSE pas dans la langue. Ça se perd, à force de pas les parler. Moi, je suis obligée de les apprendre, je pouvais pas venir aux USA sans connaitre un mot d'anglais quand meme: y'a personne qui ne parle le français ici, alors c'est pas evident de s'en rappeller; mais à force d'avoir vécu dans différents pays ou faire des affaires dans ces pays, je suis obligée et puis je compte partir dans un autre pays où l'on n'ecrit pas avec notre alphabet alors, voila: une autre langue à maitriser, c'est tout un boulot ! 🤮🤕

i was searching for a video on the catalan opening in chess, but stumbled across this instead lol. this is amazing though, i'm not fluent in spanish but my gf is latina and this dialect sounds so different to both latam and spain spanish. gonna have to bookmark this for when i'm ready to re-learn spanish haha.

Spanish being my native tongue I didn't need subtitles, it also helped that I learned French in middle school and *was* fluent in it. Besides Catala and Spanish what other are spoken/native to Spain? This comment was written in English 😆😆

Tie estas muzika grupo kiu kantas en Esperanto kies nomo estas Kaj Tiel Plu (trovu ghin en Amazon Music auh Spotfy). Mi kredas ke proksimune 80% da radikoj en Esperanto estas devenitaj el latinlingvoj. Felichan novjaroj al vi ankauh!

@@CouchPolyglot Actually quite understandable due to the proximity of the area of Catalania as an area of transition from France to Spain. Plus I find it easier to understand Ladino as a speaker of French rather than standard Castillian Spanish.

As a native french who had 4years of spanish in high school, When ever i am in catalunya or valencia. I sometimes dont fully understand a spanish text. But when i read the catalan text i 100% understand Catalan really feel like a evil french personn tried to frenchified spanish 😂😂😂 It has lot of random french words often written in bad spelling which helps a lot
