Lorrie Popow from lorriepopow.com and pysankymaster.com demonstrates how to write pysanky - intermediate level.
You will learn the basic techniques step-by-step in order to create a beautiful pysanka, which is a traditional Ukrainian Easter Egg. In the past, coloring and dyeing eggs occurred during Lent; however these days the art form is done all year long.
Find the written pattern for this egg on my website: pysankymaster.c...

I am writing my very first Ukrainian Easter egg. It's currently in its last (blue) colour dye. Then using candle and kitchen paper will melt away the wax. Not expecting perfection, it's still got the egg inside. Interesting hobby. I might now be able to tell the legend of the Easter eggs in church soon, or at least A legend.

Dear Lorrie, you are quite the talented writer of eggs. I've been making these since I was very little and I'm not really that good. You're very thorough and precise. I usually just shorthand an egg I feel like making, but you plan and measure thing. Though I'm not quite sure whether this is a business or not you take unparalleled time making these and they come out beautiful. I wish you the best of luck making these and if you own a business of any kind you might get an order from me soon.

Hi Elizabeth Kitney, It depends on the artist and what works best for them with their eggs. Many will use Ivory soap to strip or wash back. Others use vinegar or baking soda. I like to use The Works Toilet Bowl Cleaner because this is what works best for me. This product should never be used around stainless steel sinks. Use plastic or glass bowls, and wear gloves.

Hi, Lorrie. I just got a bunch of goose eggs from Schlitz Goose Hatchery. The eggs are beautiful, but I was wondering what I could do to patch up the hole before the dye bath. Do you know what works best? дуже дякую! Thanks a lot!

+Master Blackthorne Most artists plug the drain hole with melted wax, others use drain hole plugs. These plugs can be found at Wax Art Supply, or the Ukrainian Gift Shop. The melted wax plug works best for me. Many find the bought plugs can cause hair line cracks around the drain hole.

Hi I’m Ukrainian and have been making pysanky most of my life. The problem I seem to encounter is that sometimes the chemical dye doesn’t always color the egg. Is there something that I can do? I’m working on ostrich eggs at this time. Дякую. Наля.
@LorriePopow
@LorriePopow 2 года назад
Hello Helen, A few things you might try would be to soak the egg in vinegar to etch the shine off, or you can sand the egg again to get the shine off. Another thing is to join Incredible Eggs Pysanky and Batik group on Facebook. It's where you can find answers to just about anything to do with pysanky. And, thank you for watching my videos.

Lorrie - Question: I use regular chicken eggs from the grocery store. Initially they seemed fine, but then I noticed they weren't dying evenly. There is a "band" around the egg where the dye is much lighter. I tried different brands of eggs but it didn't help. Someone told me that that is caused when the egg rolls on the packing line. I've wound up using black as my final color to hide it but I'd really like to use ALL my colors. Is there a pre-treat i could use to avoid this? Also, what do you do with all your completed eggs? I have oodles. I store them because I don't know what to do with them!! But I can't stop making them! LOL Thanks for any info!

Hi Karen, I clean all my eggs as I have shown in my videos. I never just start work on an egg without making sure the egg is completely clean. Many folks use vinegar. others use dish soap, or a baking soda paste. I prefer to use The Works Toilet Bowl Cleaner, and in one of my videos (maybe in more than one video) I show how to use this product and for how long. This is not a method for everyone, but there are the others that I mentioned you can try. I try to encourage the artists to to try each and every method /technique or product, and find out what works for them best, and what works best for their eggs. About your oodles of eggs, you can give them away, sell them, or buy curio cabinets and have them on display. I have 5 curio cabinets in my small front room.

***** Again, thanks so much! I never thought to clean my eggs first. I saw you used the works on the ostrich egg and didn't realize it was for all eggs! i will try it! 5 curio cabinets!? I'd need a bigger house! HAHA! Thanks again!

***** As far as too many eggs, it is traditional to give eggs away as gifts. Darker colored eggs are for older people, lighter colors for younger folks whose life story is not written yet.
@Master_Blackthorne

Sadly, it's terrible what they do to eggs these days; they are either badly handled or frozen and that effects the adherence of the the dyes. It's best to get your chicken eggs from a farm. If they are dirty (chicken poop) gently clean them with a weak solution of white vinegar and water. If laid that day, wait about three days before decorating.

Lorrie Popow thanks so much for the respond! If I use a pencil for drawing lines, those pencil lines stay even after I wipe off wax, so my lines not really white, they are grayish. How to erase those gray marks? Should I use a special type of pencil like? Or, is there any technique to get rid of those grayish lines?
@julieselden7932
@julieselden7932 9 лет назад
Oksana Bundzyak I am having the opposite problem. I get one side finished and while I am doing the other side my lines rub off before I get done. Maybe we should trade pencils lol
@LorriePopow
@LorriePopow 9 лет назад
Oksana Bundzyak For the videos I make my pencil markings dark so the camera can see the lines. But, hopefully I mentioned this in at least one of the videos to use a light pencil line. If you still end up with pencil marks on your egg after removing the wax you can use an artist type eraser .....I bought one of these white eraser from Hobby Lobby, it name is MOO professional eraser. You can use lighter fluid or Goof Off too. But, gently rub these on the pencil marks.

Beautiful & intricate designs! Wish I could have seen the dyeing process tho'..... Are you using colored wax or dyeing the egg? I am not sure from what you left out at the end of the video!
@LorriePopow
@LorriePopow 3 года назад
I place the egg into plastic ziplock bags filled with different color dyes to dye the egg at different stages. I show in the video these steps, and repeat many times that I am dyeing the egg. The first dye bath is mentioned around the 40:45 point. When dyeing the egg the artist decides how light or dark each color will be. So the timing for each dye color will depend on how well the dye takes on the egg and what shade the artist wants .Thank you for watching my video, and for your kind words..

Lorrie, hi. Diki here. From the shape and size, I thought duck egg except the colors were too viivid. Was it a special breed of goose? I like the size a lot. The last time I touched kistka to egg, my grand daughter was as old as in this picture. I'm tempted to create workspace and return to writing eggs. Seattle weather might be mild enough thru the winter to work on an outside deck.

+Chris Gust What a great way to start my day ,hearing from an old friend. Hi Diki, the egg is a smaller goose egg. If you're tempted to return to writing eggs, you might like to join a really great pysanky group on facebook, Incredible Eggs.

How do you get the egg from green back to white? I never realized you could take the egg back to white after dying it a color. Your videos are extraordinary and so peaceful to watch!
@LorriePopow
@LorriePopow 2 года назад
Mary Ellen thank you for watching my videos and for your kind words. Normally, we just layer the dye colors. However, you can always wash back/off the colors. If just using water or soap and water doesn't get the eggshell back to white, then you can etch it back to white. Etching can be done with vinegar, Acid Magic, or toilet bowl cleaner. There are other solutions, but at the moment I've forgotten the names. The important thing to remember is if you do wash back to always dip or apply vinegar to the eggshell before you dye the next color. If interested, I also have 4 books to explain and show different designs and techniques. Lulu, sells them.

Thank you for your tutorial! Do you preserve the dyes or each egg series needs a fresh pack?
@LorriePopow
@LorriePopow 9 лет назад
mildyx The dyes are reused. Some dyes last for years others maybe a few months. Some dyes may need to be strained to get rid of unwanted particles. This can be done with a paper towel, coffee filter, or a knee high stocking. Some dyes need recharging. This is done with adding more vinegar, putting the dye in the microwave for a couple minutes, or both.
