The Dunning-Kruger Effect is a cognitive bias where people with low ability in an area vastly overestimate their capabilities. It’s the reason sports fans in pubs, in stadiums, and in front of their TV think that they would have scored that goal or made that last-minute shot. It also accurately encapsulates my experience with skateboarding to date. I had played Tony Hawk Pro Skater and watch the X Games, but I hadn’t ever really attempted to skateboard, aside from one week in 2015, when I went to Barcelona and penny boarded around Las Ramblas. So inevitable I thought I would be a natural at this challenge. They say the truth hurts, and when it comes to skating, this cliche has physical ramifications, not just metaphorical ones.
I set myself a goal for this challenge, which was to learn how to ollie up on the curb outside my house, which when I measured it, was 7 inches off the ground. It turns out that is a substantial height to jump up on. I watched some skateboard tutorials by Aaron Kyro, a sponsored skateboarder from the Bay Area, on his ‘Braille Skateboarding’ RU-vid channel. Initially, I was hoping that it would only take a few hours spread out over a couple of days, but I immediately I got an inkling that might take longer. For my video introduction, I tried to record myself skating down a gently sloping wheelchair ramp outside my house. The board slipped back, knocked over the camera, and I fell forward. It became clear that before I even got to the ollie part, I needed to practice moving around on the board. So that was lesson one; don’t run before you can walk. If you haven’t been on skateboard before, start on level ground.....
