Concise, informative and accurate... We got ourselves another based lance video! I feel your pain when people call the lance slow and drop it... it's such a crying shame! Just as there are myriad ways the lance may respond to incoming damage, there are many ways to reposition at its disposal that allow it to do what I believe it does best: maintain unrelenting, precise pressure on a monster. Big appreciation for giving the Guard Dash Shield Attack its proper time in the light. In the wake of Sunbreak's massive buff to Leaping Thrust, I feel the positional utility that Shield Attack offers is overlooked and forgotten more often than not.
I have been watching your videos on the Lance recently, and you have painted it in a completely new light for me. This weapon is fast, aggressive and technical in ways I never expected, and I've started to practice it myself. I've been enjoying the journey. Thank you for showing me something I never would've seen! I have one specific thing I've been having a hard time with, what can do I do to defend myself after a leaping thrust? I get hit while using it fairly often and can't really tell what options I have immediately after it
The fastest way to guard from leaping thrust is guard dash (or shield tackle), I did it once at 1:01. Other options are anchor rage, or spiral thrust. They all require you to finish your thrust. The more defensive option is to delay your rhythm so that the attack hits your guard dash instead of your leaping thrust. In the clip I was greedy and had to panic and luckily I could block it in time, don’t be greedy haha Thanks for watching! :)
@@jyugwat2952 thank you for the advice! I guess I'll have to be a bit less Unga bunga. And thank you again for introducing me to this wonderful weapon! Do you have any tips for using spiral slash effectively?
@@DustoVonSusto i only have the tips for using it at 4:32. Spiral thrust is good against monsters that are low to the ground like mizutsune, for tall or flying or things that hold their head high, skyward has better potential. Spiral for horizontal, skyward for vertical.
@@jyugwat2952 I see, sorry for all the questions! There isn't exactly a ton of easily accessible content for Lance at least as far I've noticed and you seem to have some real mastery over this weapon
@@DustoVonSusto I am just an average lance player, I learn from speed runners and some of the content creators who main lance are very knowledgeable. I’m just happy I’ve showed someone something new! :) happy hunting!
Lance feels sooo good to play in sunbreak ! I can't imagine playing it without insta-guard, anchor-rage or skyward thrust... I really hope the devs keep the fun of this weapon in the next MH
Been in love with shield tackle since sunbreak came out, the way it puts you back into neutral to allow for you to either keep up pressure or to momentarily pause to insta block something i wish guard dash could have, but also the instant 'face whatever direction you want' functionality is just super good. Hella down to lose easy access to leaping thrust if it means i get more insta block potential personally. Also, great guide, definitely gonna recommend to friends who want some concise information if I can convince them to join lance squad
I excluded shield tackle because I don’t consider it as a movement option. I don’t think there is ever a situation where you’ll say “shield tackle will get me there”. It advances you forward the same way the classic triple poke counter combo does. I’d argue power guard is a different situation because you do it to intentionally change your direction, and combos to leaping thrust, which is part of guard dash. Shield tackle will turn you but will not get you anywhere, you will still have to use your rush in situations where you would have used guard dash to move. But I haven’t used shield tackle in a while so correct me if I’m wrong about that. I will have to remember to include shield tackle if I ever do a complete guarding guide :) thanks for watching!
I love lance my nr1 weapon in sunbreak In iceborne it was also one of my favorits Many people say its boring and slow , but they have no idea :/ Most people i encounter only plays 2-4 weapons the most In iceborne i have played all weapon at least 100 kills each (1400h+) Nothing feels more OP then standing infront of the monster and deals so much dmg
I'm having a hard time learning how to back peddle with guard dash. I can go forward really well, side to side even, but if I try back peddling I just turn. Otherwise, Tigrex used to be my counter to life. Now I could never leave his side and even got the tail.
Honestly the only weapon that has better mobility than the lance is the insect glaive, with aerial playstyle having competetive DPS now and not just being garbage, just flying around the entire time and sticking to the monster like a very annoying mosquito is just amazing.
Heya - Is there a trick to doing Guard Dash -> Power Guard? I'm playing on PC with KB+M, and trying to use the button inputs shown at the training dummy at the beginning of the section, but I'm having trouble getting it to work. Not sure if something changed, or there's something I'm missing?
If you’re talking about 1:45 , what you’re seeing is guard dash, the dummy stomp puts me in a large knock back, then I press hop (spacebar?) to drop into power guard. The “trick” is you have to be sliding behind your shield from a large knock back. It’s shown a bit more clearly in 1:58 Does that make sense?
Yup. It’s not the same thing to me, sheathing retreat is way cooler. There’s speed runners who backhop so… do whatever you want. I’m not here to tell ppl what’s the best or how to play their game ha ha ha
