lifelongfan07 you are right if it’s the Major 7th chord but if it’s the dominant 7th it could be major or minor.
@HuardSmith
@HuardSmith 4 года назад
The chord of the 7th degree is different from a “7th” chord (maj 7th or dominant 7th). It’s actually not a “7th” chord at all. When harmonizing the major scale, the chord of the 7th degree is built with the root, the minor third, and the diminished fifth. It is two minor thirds stacked. (All other chords of the major scale have a major third interval in them somewhere.) it’s technically a half diminished chord; but if you stack one more minor third on it (making a four-note chord), it becomes the fully diminished chord.

Its a V of iii-- also called a borrowed chord-- and has absolutely nothing to do with the 7th scale degree's chord quality. Think of it coming from either the major or harmonic minor scale of the third scale defree. In C Major it would be a B7 that comes from E major or harmonic minor scale.

Timing, groove and flow are my weakest. Hard to shut off my analytical mind while playing which can lead to timing issues. Using Kenny Werner's "effortless mastery" to help. It is on point! Great video and tips! Also loved those comping fills you were playing! I wonder how you think about comping while you comp. Do you have stuff composed that you drill on or a preset vocab of melodic phrases constructed of different progressions, voicings, inversions, and substitutions, etc? Or...? Would love to get into the mind of a good comper like you, not an ex post facto analysis but actually just what your "internal" experience/feeling of great comping is like and what goes into it

I have 35 yrs. experience but never had a Real Guitar Lesson . I grew up in the 80's so we learned how to play by watching players hands on MTV videos then Tab cam along but I wasn't very good at reading tab so my friend would read it play it a few times until I had it memorized. I just wanna learn how to figure out the Key a song is in and know where my nearest say A minor is at with as little thinking as possible . I can shred like those 80's guys but I stay in the pocket and would like to be able to travel all over the neck without feeling Boxed in . If you can explain a way to do that I couldn't Express my Gratitude !! You can have my 1st Born son but Im over 50 so that will be tricky since the wife is 5 years younger has something to do with that LOL Good content got me thinking Thanks but my real issues are what I wrote above .

I'm also a Metal Head so not sure if that makes it harder or easier for me to learn 80's Hard Rock , Metal , Thrash & Glam is my music . I am aware that all those forms use a lot of Blues and some Jazz scales Modes but those Genres dont interest me , being honest am a Big ZZ -Top Fan I know Billy Gibbons personally have hung with him on several occasions over the years . I even tried 7 Gauge strings like he plays. I didn't break them but went back to 9's right away for my comfort ..

In the DHS.. Diatonic Harmonized Scale.. the "one" is always Major 7th chord.. . The concept of "Minor key".. or relative minor.. doesn't change that. "A" minor.. for example.. which is the relative minor of the key of C major.. meaning.. all the chords are the same.. the only difference being the feeling of the tonal center. The first chord.. not to be confused with the "1" chord.. would be the 6 chord.. meaning.. A minor 7.. followed by the 7.. B minor 7 flat 5.. followed by the 1.. Cmajor 7.. 2.. Dminor 7.. 3.. Eminor 7.. 4.. F major 7.. 5... G7.. and back around to the Aminor. 7. recognize that this is all semantics.. you could call that first chord of a minor key.. the 1.. if you want.. but that may cause you to misunderstand Music Theory as taught by other folks using this standard terminology. #justsaying

I was always of the assumption that the 7th key in the numbers system was a diminished chord. Am I missing or not understanding something? Please clarify. Thx in advance.
@ayoungethan
@ayoungethan 4 года назад
Yes it is often a substitution from an alternate scale. For example the 7 chord of lydian major is a minor chord (the 3 chord of the Ionian major). And lydian itself is often used for modal playing because it more firmly holds onto root tonality without cadence movement/tension (eliminates the tritone tension)

For instance if my Band says 6 5 2 1 In Eb major It would take me way too long. Did you at any time sit down and started learning all the Major scales by heart, are does it just come with time?

Do the one-chord in every shape/inversion you know and figure out where the nearest other number-chords are. Example, do the one-chord in an A-shape and you will find the five-chord in the E-shape right above it (CAGED-approach). Also learn all the chords in a key moving horizontally across the fret board, with root on 6th, 5th and 4th string. Hope that makes sense and helps, cheers

Majors, minors, 7's, minor 7, major 7, ninths, thirteenths, diminished, sis, sus4. Sounds like a lot and there are others, but most R&B, Soul, Neo Soul songs only have about 4 chords in them and if you give me a minor 7, major 7, a natural chord and the key...I can probably play DOZENS of R&B classics right now. From the Oldskool groups like the Isleys, EWF, Bar Kay's, Commodores, Al Green, and others...to newer stuff like Jill Scott, Rafael Sadiq, DeAngelo, etc. The above mentioned chords are the Holy Grail of the genre. 👊🏾

I’ll go back to Justin’s guitar. These don’t work as good as I thought.

Definitely weakest in the chords. Not so much the chord shapes but the names of the shapes, and the correlation between them.

I understand you're trying to make things simple for newbies but im not sure that it would help if your intentionally lying about chord qualities. You know FULL well the 7 chord is diminished. Imagine someone working on their scales and then run across your video, now they may lose heart trying to figure out how that chord is supposed to be minor or major, but diatonic as well. Good tips though!! P.s. maybe doing a video on Borrowed chords and/or secondary dominants would help.
