In this tutorial, I talk about understanding fly tying threads and other spooled materials. I cover the different types of materials used in some common fly tying threads used for tying trout flies and I also explain the confusing sizing systems. In the second part, fly tying wires, floss, tinsel and wax.
I talk about the two fly tying thread sizes, the differences between them, some confusing over laps you get with the aught system when comparing fly tying threads with the denier weighting system and simple ways to remember them.
I also cover the main thread materials you will often come across in fly tying and explain some key difference between them. Each type of fly tying thread material has its own benefits and selecting the correct type of thread can be a useful part of fly tying.
I decided to put together a series of fly tying tutorials to help beginners to learn to fly tie for trout.
Some of the stuff in this series may be text book, some may not. This is based on my experienced of fly tying which has developed over more than a decade of tying trout flies.
Over the years I've spent a lot of time studying fly tying, have an interest in macroinvertebrates and have been a keen angler from a young age. All of which has contributed to how I like to tie trout flies.
I hope you find this series helpful and informative and never lose sight of the joy the wonderful world of fly tying has to offer.
