Hi! I'm not nearly an expert pilot like you but I think you're doing something strange: When lifting off, you almost always first retract flaps and then you retract the landing gear. It shall be the opposite: You should first retract the landing landing gear, thus reducing drag and increasing airspeed, and only then do you retract flaps. If you retract flaps too early, you risk causing a stall because you may have not reached the airspeed appropriate for that wing configuration. Pay close attention to full-scale aircraft, and you'll confirm that that's the sequence they use: 1st retract gear, 2nd retract flaps.
@TwoBrosRC
@TwoBrosRC 7 месяцев назад
You'd be correct if this was a full scale jet. The order of operations would necessitate retracting gear first to minimize drag, then retract flaps after reaching positive climb at a certain speed. This is a model jet with just over a 1 to 1 thrust to weight ratio so it doesn't make a bit of difference. Once it climbs it's already at a power setting that would prevent a stall from forming unless one were to pull the elevator excessively to induce an accelerated stall. Gear and flaps out make no difference.

I told my wife I'm done with jets and was about throw it in the garbage. I watched this video and your other landing video about 4 times. I glued my Futura back together and can now land perfectly!!! The biggest thing for me was about extending flaps only during the final approach and keeping the speed up. Thank u thank u thank u!!!

You mean with crow or only flaps? I don´t get your opinion about extending flaps only during the final approach. It seems that John extends them in high altitude but near, to loose altitude and speed. I do that with my stall planes after I tried it on my first glider... I´m about to start with my first jet, an FMS Avanti v1 in perfect conditions. Motivation was also John´s channel :P After watching this video I realized that landing with flaps isn´t so easy. Maybe I´ll try crow first. But need to see for the right setup too.

Hi Jonathan, I have seen this video a couple of times in the last months :) I´ll try crow in the near future. I have ordered the 90mm Viper from FMS and to practice the smaller 70mm :) But currently I´m practicing with my 64mm Futura. Landing with full flaps is very good. After many landings I installed and tried FMSs Reflex out but that compensates my elevator down with flaps so I need to push the plane down or I get too slow. Either way those are good trainings to learn how edfs fly :)

The 90mm Viper is without a doubt the easiest edf to fly and for me the most uneventful to land. Watching this video, my best out 6 maiden day landings weren’t as good as your worst landing. Crow hasn’t been added yet, flap only, but I seem to be carrying more speed. My ix12 calls out “Timer Off” when I go below 25% throttle, so I know where I’m at power-wise. Our runway is a little on the short side, but if I get the glide-slope correct it’s not an issue. Where I have destroyed countless nose gear pins on the Eflite a-10, 70mm Viper, 70mm Thunderbird is on the flare. It porpoises, I climb, I panic, I push the nose down and slam the nose gear. (I’m typically flying at 90/30, with a low rate at 70/30, that I really never use) On Flap Only landings should I go to low rates and increase the expo to at least 50%? Oh! And thanks for the tip or thoughts on really getting the CG dialed in on the 2 Freeway T-33’s and L-39. Battery placement full forward is where all 3 jets fly the best, but it made every landing a 3 pointer at best. Moving the battery back to where it CG’s perfectly made for some interesting first couple of laps, but much better “Mains First” landings. Had it not been your tip I would’ve continued to complain, “I just don’t get it! It flies on rails, perfectly level flights, I just can’t get the nose up on landings!”
@TwoBrosRC
@TwoBrosRC Год назад
Nose heaviness is usually the cause of porpoising - so many "influencers" on RU-vid recommend objectively terrible setups for model aircraft that result in them flying poorly. One huge tip - if something begins to porpoise, don't push the nose down in a panic. Try pushing the nose down as the jet approaches and trade altitude for airspeed. About five feet off the ground, let it level out and bleed off more airspeed, then slowly add in some elevator to flare it. With the CG set up right, a lot of aircraft will land perfectly fine like this. The Viper definitely does. Crow just makes the technique consistent in wind, but it lands beautifully without crow.

I'm curious about "crow" setup. I understand that at the heart it's very simple: the flaps go down and the ailerons go up, etc. adding drag and making the glide path steeper. But what about the opposite: the flaps go "up" and the ailerons go "down" I think this would have different results and maybe suprising in breaking?
@TwoBrosRC
@TwoBrosRC Год назад
Ailerons going down would create wash-in instead of washout, which would negatively impact stall characteristics in a less than desirable way.

@@TwoBrosRC Just my whacky thought... I'm finding that only for landing the Viper 70mm using SAFE helps me a great deal to keep the wings level and add a touch off up elevator so I can ascend smoothly. I had used to NOT use SAFE and go from high rate to low rate when ascending to help cushion anything overcorrection. @TwoBrosRC
@TwoBrosRC Год назад
@@stephandevriesere3667 I can't really "make" a landing strip. I'm flying at an airport and the property isn't mine. I just work with what I've got. With regard to height, I have flatter approaches with crow than I do with standard flaps - if I try to maintain a glide slope using throttle with standard flaps, the jet will keep flying indefinitely and will not maintain a proper slope. Power is needed for crow so it doesn't fall out of the sky. The standard technique for landing with flaps alone in a jet like this is to keep the nose pushed down to maintain airspeed until flaring - coming in with altitude is kind of a requirement there. Additionally, wind shear is a big factor at this airport and I prefer to have some altitude buffer so I can react to the model suddenly dropping 10 to 20 feet at a time on approach. It's not susceptible to shear until it's in landing configuration.
