Looking good to me. I’m not a Boily but have my own welder and built my own boat/RTT rack for our camper trailer and two years later after doing some heavy duty work including the Gibb River Road and plenty of trips around our home region here in the Pilbara and it’s still going strong. So I reckon yours will be more than good enough. Really enjoying watching this build series 👌👌

Enjoying this series already! Good on you for having a go welding. I've never done it either and struggle watching videos of guys laying perfect welds every time then saying just have a go it's not that hard. Nice to see someone genuinely learning on camera!

Cracking job mate! I’ve done a lot of welding and specifically boat trailers, don’t stress about the puddle falling when doing the vertical welds, just follow all the way down and if you’re not too sure, do a double weld on it. I’m currently at the beginning of doing the same build, good luck.

Great work Steve, as good as it is to have people help out, as you say the best way of learning is by doing and if a couple of mistakes are made it will only give you more lessons learnt. I have had a dream of building a camper from the ground up for quite some time and think I need to put away some $$$'s and commit to trying. Cheers 🍻

been waiting for this bit, for your welding or up, the easiest way for a beginner is to spot weld it up or down (just like your tacks only just in front of each other 😎) do it on some test pieces really easy to do, you can even do it on flat welds if you are not confident enough as yet to run welds (yes I am a boilermaker) that's how I show people who want to learn, baby steps 😁 so far so good though keep up the good work 👍🏻

Just a suggestion, when you are tacking frames up be mindful that as the tack cools it shrinks and will pull your frame out of square so always follow up with a tack on the opposite side when possible to help prevent it. I’m keen to see more of the build 👍🏼
@ashleyduvall1962
@ashleyduvall1962 Год назад
Also the issue your having that you are calling dots, it’s porosity can come from dirty metal, holding the torch too far away and not allowing the gas to shield the weld pool correctly or you may not have your gas flow rate set correctly.. in a workshop with no fans/wind you should be fine on 13L/min. Hopefully that helps

Love the "jumping in the deap end" approach. From one novice to another, yes the welder will get through the blue coating, but welding with be easier if you flap disc it off. Keep up the good work! 👍

It's your first time bud, you'll get the hang of it. Slight helping tip, with the 'falling puddle', weld top down, so you control the puddle instead of bottom up. hope that helps 😉 otherwise bloody awesome that your doing it all yourself.

Awesome job so far, only suggestion I would make is with the water tank eyelets. I would get some 4mm or 5mm flat steel cut into a 200mm square with a hole in the middle for the eyelets and weld that on underneath. Probably overkill, but it would spread the load over a bigger area than a washer. Especially once you start using water and the weight starts moving around. Keep the great work up though, awesome watching you have a go

Thoroughly enjoying this as I am about to do this myself, when it comes to suspension and stuff check out Trek Hardware, Their prices seem pretty comparable with Huntsmann and I have had great experiences with them. Seems reasonable enough quality for the price

Well done for giving it a crack. Just remember to grind and clean all surfaces of paint and where your earth is mounted. Always have bare clean material when welding, the blue coating on the metal will contaminate the weld and stop you from getting the best earth. But other than that mate well done. 🤙

I love the concept, and it's tempting me to have a go at something similar on a smaller 6x4. I have a feeling that you are going to really struggle to keep it under weight. Even a small camper trailer like a Patriot X1 is 950 kg empty, and that's mostly alloy and a lot smaller. Have you looked at what it'd cost (other than just parts) to get it re-engineered for something like 1500kg?
@nabob14

No criticism here... awesome content, good job on the welds! I will mention that your welder likely has two different settings for polarity (you physically have to relocate the welding torch/ground) inside the machine). One way is for flux core, the other for Gas (MIG). If your getting a lot of spatter with one method then you likely need to change the polarity on the welder. There is usually a picture on the inside showing the location for flux core or (MIG).

I'd like to know about this too as I'm also considering a build like this. Also, could you do 2 water tanks or would that significantly increase the weight? What is the final weight you got at the end?

I glazed over it because I wasn’t entirely sure myself at that stage. I ended up welding it to the trailer frame. I was going to use over center catches but didn’t think it would be strong enough. So welded it.

By the look of it, I assumed you got a gasless mig? You need to drag the torch, just like stick welding. Don't be a tight-arse, go to bunnings and get a gas bottle. Gas shielded mig welds will look a lot nicer, and be stronger..... If I lived close by I would be happy to give you a few lessons...... Practice makes perfect.......

@cackle067 Год назад
@@raymondhayne1250Mate giving that reply shows you don't know squat Big difference between only having to paint the welds to having to paint the whole frame For a start the cost of a good epoxy enamel to paint the frame for rust protection is more than the extra cost of buying gal steel The paint will wear off & scratch everywhere it does it will rust I've been doing metal fab and built a couple of trailers myself my current trailer I built for 4wding to take into steep Point WA after ripping springs off & snapped frame on 2 other factory made trailers
@raymondhayne1250
@raymondhayne1250 Год назад
@@cackle067 I don’t know about you mate, but I’ve been working in the metal industry for well over 15years. I’m am a qualified boiler maker and I’ve been bending and fabricating shit that would be able to fit all your trailers put together in it. Telling a bloke that has never picked up a welder before in his life and doesn’t work with steel to use and weld galvanised steel and expecting him to know what to do is just stupid. Like Steve has said numerous times in the video, he is just giving it a crack. Start off with basic skills and learn from there.
