Although I was and still am a devout Catholic, I think this show is immensely important, because it explains something about religion that not many people talk about, it's effectively a government. Because of that there is a real potential for hypocrisy and abuse of power. These people always try to hide behind their "divine authority" to excuse their behavior. This might be just soap-boxing coming from me, but religion without love isn't religion, but veiled oppression.

@@chaz693you are right, those things were wrong 100%. And just to give you more recent fodder, the contemporary handling of pedophilic priests, especially in the US, has also been despicable. That doesn't change the otherwise valuable teachings of the religion, but it is something to actively condemn while being involved with the church. While external influences can have an effect on any community, religious or otherwise, a community can only grow if the opportunity for that growth is accepted internally. I haven't given up.

A couple things to touch on: 1) Orel's parents - the show points out how their own upbringing damaged them, and how that damage passed on to their family as adults. Bloberta was the black sheep of her family (which is why she always sings with gusto, since that was something her family valued and she still paled in comparison to her siblings), and takes comfort in tending the home - about the only thing she was actually valued for growing up. Clay's father resented him for the death of Clay's mother via prank, to the point of only acknowledging his existence to heap physical abuse on him, which reinforced Clay's mentality that abuse = affection. 2) Clay's father, for his part, realizes just *how* badly he'd fucked up in the special "Beforel Orel", and even attempts to apologize to Clay for the years of abuse he'd given him... and Clay, rather than doing the "Christian" thing by forgiving him and turning the other cheek, decides that the apology is far too little, too late, and cuts him out of his - and Orel's - life for good. During the same special, Clay is shown being hesitant to bring Orel to church at all, knowing just how impressionable his son is and trying to do right by him - it's only because of societal pressure that he finally caves and takes Orel to church. It's not even born out of a personal belief, it's just bowing to the crowd.
@blacksesamecandies
@blacksesamecandies Год назад
For Clay to have forgiven Arthur (his dad) would have probably been a bigger blow to his ego. He was getting back at Arthur by raising Orel in his own "unique" way. Much of Clay's misguided parenting is born out of a need to one-up his own dad, but he succumbs to his own inner demons. Trapped in a marriage he didn't want but was too weak to get out of, getting a really terrible addiction and then doubling-down on all the toxicity doomed him. Bloberta was nearly equally as bad, she kind of set the ball into motion. She was complicit in the way Orel was raised and never tried to do anything otherwise.

Moral Oral is one of the most important shows Adult Swim has ever aired imo. Dino Stamatopoulos blew my mind when I realized not only did he create one of my favorite shows, but also was one of my favorite reoccuring characters on Community. I think you did a great job of condensing and laying out everything Dino wanted people to see with his show, while he was able to do it. As misguided and zany his journey was, it warms my heart to know he never lost faith and never strayed from the path. The best way to get back at his dad was to being in the same situation but not lose your compass. Orel proves his father wrong that a shitty situation doesn’t mean you become a shitty person and that Clay chose a path of darkness. The show isn’t criticizing religion as itself but the hypocrisy of those who cherry-pick the message and in the case of Christianity, behaving in ways opposite to Christ’s actual teachings.

I related to orel a lot growing up. I was just a kid and all I wanted to be as a good person. And as I grew up I kept struggling to reconcile the world I saw around me with what people were telling me was best. I became disillusioned for awhile. I became depressed. Sometimes I just wanted to disappear from it all. For the longest time I was the chipper peacemaker in my fighting family. But things got harder as I became an adult. As a kid I made a promise to myself to never lose that sense of wonder in the world. And my dad told me it would be hard. Somehow that conversation evolved to him making me promise that if he ever got so old he had to be put in a nursing home I would smother him with a pillow first then sprinkle his ashes on the front lawn. Then he was like why are you crying and I replied with "DAD IM SEVEN!!" Or something. Maybe twelve. Still wasn't great. But even then I held on to my belief that there are things in the world worthy of believing in. Even if it wasn't the Christian god. Or how my parents thought the world should be. And despite it all, I still believe that. There's still good in people. It may not be as prevalent as it should be. So I kept my curiosity. I kept on asking why. Why are they bad, cause they're hurt, where did the hurt come from, their parents, and theirs? Their parents, and so on. So it's not that the world lacks a capacity for goodness or decency. People can if they try. And they can only try if they have the resources, energy, and the desire to. You make peace with the things you have no power to change, and you take full advantage of the things that you can. You plant seeds of kindness and empathy where you are able and don't let the disillusionment consume you. It's hard. There are bad days. But you keep going. Keep asking questions. Keep building relationships and learn how to make boundaries that can protect you from people that might hurt you. It's a balancing act but it's possible and it's worth it. Because at least you're you. You like the things you like. You have control over your situation. And you take care of yourself so you can have the capacity to take care of the people you care about. The world is a big place full of things and places and people and experiences. And despite all the bad there are things out there worth living for. You just have to find what works for you. Maybe that's what moral Orel was trying to get at. It's a prime time fucked up shit show out there. But you don't have to let it fuck you up. You have control over being the person you want to be and the person you'd like to see in the world. And that's my favorite moral of the show.

Moral Orel is a great yet sad show, to me it teaches how everyone has problems and how most people instead of dealing with them, they pass them to the people they interact with because it’s “easier” or because it’s how society expect them to act when there are social norms and taboos that shouldn’t be valid anymore; and while that is mainly explored with religion, I think that can apply to other ideas and social norms
@brazilianambassadordale8223
Honestly your backstory is very much worth the listen considering that for us who can't entirely relate to Moral Orel in the same fashion you do, your means of relating to the show only makes its premise seem all the more real. Don't sell urself short homie, cause you're doing yourself a disservice! I relate to it in a far more general sense in that, for example, I recognized at some point that I myself would hide behind various beliefs, ideologies, biases, and hypocrisies that I picked up over time to cope with my own insecurities and fears at the expense of the well being of those around me, and I like to think that I can better abandon those now and I'm all the happier for it. In the show, they hide behind Christianity and righteousness and I also see it in my own friends and especially some members of my family in their own ways. Fundamentally, Orel is an innocent and pure child in a town where the residents are all provided a moral out for their flaws in their extra commandments, the "repressional" booth, and their own church attendance which signals to their neighbors "hey, I'm a good Christian"! Funnily enough, Orel essentially does the same thing throughout this show, albeit unknowingly so lol before having his father provide his own twisted advice on what he should've done. At the same time, Orel truly only wants to do right so after he starts to really mature as he continues to get fed all the BS on Clay and the townspeople's corrupt approach to Christianity, he ultimately decides to just do what he believes is right regardless. The people of this town are ultimately just scared to face truth; as Clay once literally said himself, the truth is the scariest part of one's mind. Orel simply prioritizes being a good person over escaping his fears. This whole thing kind reminds me of the ever-growing right wing extreme we have nowadays but I'm not gonna go down that rabbit-hole... Nice video!

Grew up being raise below the poverty line by my religious African American grandmother. So not the white, middle class demographic lol but I related a lot to this show as a kid. I remember it confirming a lot of the things I was already questioning. The things my grandma and religion told me versus what I actually experienced. I was afraid of being my grandma and like the rest of my family (in denial, angry, abusive) and thought religion was my way out of that. But I just couldn't make sense of what they were teaching and I was gay af so that obviously didn't help. While I didn't keep my faith, I strive to be a better person than the people I was raise by and find some meaning in it.

Almost all people do the "cafeteria" style of belief. As far as enjoying the show, decades back I knew a lot of strict religious "holy rollers" who were very angry and would use the bible to verbally bully their children, wives, and each other. I could not stand being around them as the hypocracy was too much.
@SeanWinters
@SeanWinters 2 года назад
This is all super strange to me because I grew up in what you could call an "actually religious" household, where we actually lived out what the Bible said to, and I never experienced this "using the Bible to bully your kids" from my parents. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure stuff like this happens, but my parents never compromised on their religious beliefs. Never. So in my head, religion isn't correlated with being overly strict or mean, those such as the characters of Moral Orel aren't mean abusive bullies because of their religion, ya know? It's because they don't actually live out their supposed principles. Clay is an alcoholic who can't forgive his wife, Blob is a serial cheater who brought Clay to drinking, etc. etc. This is why I leaned into Christianity as well. It isn't Christ who made them this way, it was their abandonment of Christ, trading it in for the appearance of cleanliness, that made them this way. And so it is in reality.

A part of the bible (i don't remember the verse) is often interpreted as the phrase "Blood is thicker than water," which is used to emphasize the importance of family, but its original translation is something akin to "the blood shed in battle is thicker than the water shared in the womb," which essentially means that your TRUE family are the people who you share your struggles with, not those who share your genes. Despite his parents from the get go he managed to keep his positive outlook and genuine goodness, I think that alone made all the difference in his future, especially with the fact that he ends up with Christina who was also a genuinely good person. It’s crazy how much I relate to Orel. Although I’m Canadian I was raised Catholic and went to Catholic school, got confirmed, the whole shebang. My community was nearly all white and Christian. My dad grew up with a distant and abusive father while his mother spoiled and coddled him. Her death was the catalyst for his alcoholism, which then lead to him becoming emotionally abusive and bitter. My mom was neglected and criticized by her own mom and was often bullied by her siblings. I’ve been called pretty much every name in the book by my parents and they have said some truly awful things to me I’ll never forget. My parents wholeheartedly despise each other and them getting divorced would be like putting a rabid dog out of its misery. I have no idea why my family even bothers pretending we’re happy in public when the neighbours can hear the dysfunction through the walls. On top of all that I had just lost my faith less than a year before I stumbled upon this show. Needless to say Nature absolutely broke me when I first saw it as a troubled little 13 year old. The campfire scene hit so close to home it physically hurt to watch. Also Moral Orel introduced me to The Mountain Goats which is priceless on its own. Nothing like boogieing to some Alpha Couple songs while your dad drunkenly threatens to kill himself and your mom is locked in her room scream-sobbing about how you’re fucking useless. Something I find significant too is that Orel's wife is Christina Pousable, basically the only other person who's experienced the exact same upbringing he did (at least in terms of the show). He didn't marry someone who had a happy upbringing and helped him out of the cycle. No, he married someone with an upbringing just as abusive and dysfunctional as his own. Orel and Christina, by all accounts, should've ended up like Clay and Bloberta. I think almost everyone would've expected a conclusion like that, especially with how cynical the show often was. However, we instead find them to be happy, well-adjusted, and loving parents as well as perfectly content in their marriage. Despite how dark this show often was, I've found it to be one of the most optimistic stories told in recent years. Orel and Christina were destined to repeat the cycle of abuse but, together, they chose to break it. Very few things are harder than breaking out of the abusive, unhealthy ways you were brought up but it can be done. The world is sadly filled with Orels and Christinas; kids and teens raised in horribly dysfunctional, abusive families. However, there is hope for all of them. It's very difficult work to break out of the cycle but it can be done. As ironic as this statement may be, it needs to be said; don't lose faith, especially in yourself.

I know this was supposed to be about Moral Orel, but I just wanted to say your explanation of your religious upbringing and how it caused you to develop a more humanitarian perspective, summed up my own experiences perfectly.

I always love hearing how people relate to this show and their religious upbringing. I haven't heard CCD in a long time. Watching this show was cathartic seeing Orel break generational trauma, question religion, and keep his faith and not warping it into something else. Never heard the term cafeteria Catholics, but that definitely describes my family and community i grew up in. Although anytime i told my mom i was i questioned religion (whether as a kid or adult), was always met with a "how dare you! You must never do that!" Which waa always scary as a kid and as an adult, a little scary but also just pitiful seeing my mom react like that and knowing i really need to emotionally distance myself away from her, again. This show was ahead of it's time when it premiered and a shame it was canceled, but I'm glad to know the writers at least got to end it on their own terms.

I was in a similar boat as you growing up and right around confirmation time is when I found Moral Orel. It helped a lot more than most of what I was taught in CCD classes about what that meant and how I could view my religion going forward. It was a good lesson on hypocrisy and how to deal with it in the future.

Hey just watched your video essay and I really respect how you hit the nail when it came to generational trauma and blind obedience. As a chinese american I've suffered a lot of shit from my own abusive sperm donor and "brother" who constantly physically and emotionally abused me and made me go crazy. I'm gone from them now, and they're kinda their own karma for being miserable lonely lovers with no self-esteem, but it's disturbing to see how common this abuse is, religious trauma and from fellow asians. Unfortunately, a lot of asians like me have suffered from extremist confucianism and its teachings on blind obedience, but there aren't that many serious stories about this topic. Confucianism isn't often thought of as a religion but considering its dogma on blind obedience I think it deserves to be treated along the likes of cults and fundamentalist Christianity/ islam. I wish I could see the positives in confucianism, just like how some ppl here can see the positives in Christianity, but considering how confucianism is completely based on obedience, might makes right, and that some lives are superior to others, I unfortuantely cannot bring myself to do that. Fuck confucius, and I hope his bullshit "wisdom" hasn't ruined the lives of countless other asians, I just hope me and other asians who have survived abuse are just outliers. All and all, loved your video! Please make more videos like this exploring trauma. Moral orel has kinda inspired me to make my own series abt trauma and religion, with a special focus on confucianism and a target towards fellow asiana

Hi, I’m not part of the community you’re speaking of but I heavily support your thought process to make a series based on it! I think everyone who has suffered religion trauma should be able to educate others on it and/or tell their side of the story, and I wish you luck!

This video got me to rewatch this show for the first time since I was 9 years old (when it left the air). I have to say of all the things I loved about it, the most surprising and best part to me was the side story with Stephanie and Reverand Putty... since contrary to most shows like this, it actually, mostly, had completely real emotional moments not clouded by crass humor or grossout jokes, it was just real, and wholesome.

Not only one but THE most important shows that EVER existed!!!...Way ahead of it's time!!!...This show brought into light the real issues of a dark,twisted,evil world that is so apathetic that the darkness of it all will never be resolved...such reality only exists in the truest forms of life.So sad to see them cancel this gem of a series but I guess most of society like their heads in the sand...

YOOOOOOOOO fantastic! Never heard of your series, but I love Moral Orel! I think you accidentally missed one of the most potent episodes: Orel having a breakdown, and chanting over and over to himself "I'm a church!" until he's literally beaten back into the system. Of all the depictions of someone's personal journey, it has to be one of the most elaborate and amazing. What showcases the absolute magic of Moral Orel that makes it great despite it's sick and twistedness, they immediately tear through your chest and rip out your heart: he loses that discovery and chance for independence. There are good stories, there are good shows, and then there are *intelligent* shows written by *intelligent* people, that only happen when the people in charge are looking the other way, by accident or on purpose. Extremely rare when it happens, but it's gorgeous.

i just finished moral orel yesterday and i can say, i really loved the show. the way the represented many different things and not overdoing it was perfect. honestly, for a show like that, it brought a lot of people together because it talks about dark topics that have affected many lives in the real world. and the foreshadowing in the story too is absolutely amazing, when you read it. it all starts to make sense, the creators really did not hold back when it came to moral orel. as i can relate and have dealt with some issues the characters have gone through. to sum up what i said, it's a show most can relate with but they did it in the most gut wrenching way.

I'm a swede who (although baptized as a baby) didn't have a particularly christian upbringing outside of general western cultural osmosis, but this show still really spoke to me when I discovered it as a young teen, and still means alot to me. I think it might be bc I, as someone who's queer, autistic and has ADHD, can still relate to that feeling of questioning norms, authority and the hypocrisy among it all. (my parents also got separated while I was still a baby so it was just mom and me until I was 4, and my mom and step-dad broke up twice much later, so I p early got to see my parents as flawed human beings) Also, this was the show that made me realize that I have a particular love for shows that start out goofy and formulaic but become alot more genuine and non-formulaic overtime. It introduced me to The Mountain Goats, and I haven't listened to any other band while depressed since.

After watching Moral Orel I felt glad to be born and raised in a family and a culture where organised religion fell by the wayside decades ago for the majority of the population. Where I’m from, religious people are the minority. Out of all of the religions I’ve been exposed to in my lifetime, Christians have been the most judgmental while also being the biggest hypocrites. I’ve known Muslims, Sikhs, Jews, Hindus - and none of them ever told me I was going to hell. My best friend when I was seven told me I was going to hell because I’m not catholic - that is what she got out of the classes she took in preparation for her first holy communion. I told my father, who told her mother - who then phoned our house apologising profusely. Still - that is what she took away from her religious education - I haven’t forgotten it.

Edited: I started to rant. BUT RIGHT THERE! EXACTLY! again I grew up in a family cult that ended up merging with another. But as I grew up in 2 worlds. Not being able to make friends, learning facts over faith. But then faith offers no solutions and nothing concrete, just...drama. And The religion that my preacher and teachers actually in frustration of me and heather's questions said and I quote "If you keep asking all of these questions. You're going to hell. The only people who go to heaven have faith" But I ended up asking " But then wouldn't I already be in hell? Because I'm already asking questions, and I don't get it. And the bible is supposed to be so easy a child understands it." and I swear Mr.Gary "Well, The questions you are asking I can't answer." I this is where I lost my pizza, and got a phone call to my parents to come pick me up and got whipped by dad. I told Mr.Gary "Then you shouldn't be teaching us."

interesting analysis there. I don't agree 100%, however you bring up a TON of good points and are things to really consider when thinking about the show. Art can impart different ideas to different people, which is something i appreciate about things like this. I would be curious what your thoughts and analysis would be of a show that is, what i would consider to be, a hidden gem, Big O. I have LOTS of thoughts about the philosophy behind the show. It's also not a super long show, but is packed with lots of content, and its more than just a mecha anime.

I really don’t believe you need to have a christian background and live in america for the show to appeal to you the show is definitely for standard middle class people and the characters are christians but it doesn’t mean you have to be christian or have had a christian background to be ‘seen’ by the show i am british and people in my family are christian but it was never forced upon me however many, many other things in the show (apart from the religious bits) do apply and i feel like it’s still a must watch for people who aren’t american or have a christian background
