WHY DO YOU QUIT WORKING ON ME | One Villainous Scene 

As someone who grew up with an alcoholic parent, i find this show's representation extremely accurate. I lived through very similar situations from the "you become a bad persone when you drink" to Clay's monologue about his addiction.

To make matters worse with this scene, right before Clay shot Orel he was talking about how there are no accidents, implying to Orel that he meant to shoot him. And also the fact that he wouldn't accept that he shot him the later morning, but accepted instantly that he killed the bear, the thing he didn't even actually do

Very important: for the rest of the series, Orel walks with a noticeable limp.

I wish this show was never canned it's oddly therapeutic in a dark cathartic way, I grew up with an alcoholic father, dismissive mother and siblings that hated me. This show was a good outlet because I could relate with Orel and the depiction of trauma, abuse and slow dive into cynicism felt very very real and human. This show was compelling and danced on the line of acceptable TV and "Dear God, who let this be aired." But I love it for it, the show would never shy away from dark topics and made many characters human and horrible, they felt real.

Jesus Christ...this guy honestly seems both hateable AND interesting.

Really think about this too. In most cartoons alcoholism is always portrayed as a funny joke. Like "Haha, look at this fool being drunk, lol". This cartoon on the other hand, takes alcoholism very seriously that it comes across as... just disturbing. That's what makes Moral Orel so different from the other Adult Swim cartoons.

And this is the same guy who voiced Baymax... Anyway, this was intense when I first watched it. I think I would say around 8:34 is when I felt like I was sinking into my couch when watching this. The anger in his voice just gradually getting worse and worse by every second was truly horrifying. Scott Adsit did such a fantastic job playing this character. *God* I love this show! This was a great video, mate.

I personally don't feel empathy for Clay EXCEPT... For his marriage to Bloberta. Bloberta manipulated him to drink and marry her so that she could be accepted. Do I think Clay would have been a better person if not for Bloberta? I really don't know since as a kid he's been coddled and raised to not care about others. What I do know is that Bloberta made it worse, and forced him into a marriage he didn't really want in the first place. As much as I hate Clay and think he should have never even had the honor to be Orel's dad, I think Bloberta is just as guilty if not more of Orel's abuse.

You got one thing wrong though: A bear shot Orel

Clay has always honestly been a bad person, but I do think he could have gotten better had he not gotten manipulated into marriage

If I could describe Clay in one sentence, it would be "He who makes a beast out of himself, gets rid of the pain of being a man".

I just loved the visuals of the sky getting darker, the flames basically emanating from his face, the flies appearing more and more showing just how rotten this man has gotten.

Clay managed to push his son and his family away leaving him alone. When Orel said that he hates him, Clay just shrugs it off not realizing what he has done. When Orel asks Bloberta why she married him, she didn't give him a straight answer and acts like there was nothing wrong with him. When Bloberta left Orel's room, she broke crying because she deeply knew it was her fault that Clay drinks alot because she wanted to escape her family and be accepted by her friends (their marriage ended badly and she married Clay for nothing). She looked at Clay and gave him the cold shoulder and refused to confront him about the incident. She is upset that Clay caused Orel to see the truth.

As someone who suffered from alcoholism I feel what clay was saying, that's what it's like to drink you drink to just feel anything and have to keep drinking more and more. It makes you feel worse and worse each day as well

I'm gonna be honest, I don't think I could handle a show like this.

And this is why Adult Swim has a lot of untold gems that needs to be known to the world.

Man #1: I drink to dull the hurt. Man #2: I drink to hurt myself. Clay: I drink to hurt YOU.

I keep saying this but moral orel would likely be known as an american classic were it not animated. I'm glad to find people like you that "get it" so at the very least I know I'm not crazy

I was scared and shocked when Clay getting “hallucinating” and shot Orel in the leg. He was like my favorite character before that happened! Anyway, I enjoy the show. I like how it’s a hilarious series with dark and serious moments.

the thing about this scene is...it's not played for laughs at all. It's not supposed to be funny. its dark, uncomfortable and shows that mroe than anything Orel is very seriously, non-comedically frigthened of his dad, changing the nature of their relationship and of the show itself.

I grew up and lived with a narcissistic alcoholic father for 18 years of my life. I am now 20. Through him I have lost years of childhood, educational development, and just general happiness. To an alcoholic anyone in their life comes second to themselves and their addiction. After watching some of the episodes in this show I'm just in tears because I've been there. It is horrible and people like that ruin your life and won't own up to it. They will only blame it on you...

9:16 When I saw this scene, I legit thought Clay was going to attack Orel.

I lived with an alcoholic father and I spent my entire childhood to young adult life living with him, all the anger, self destruction, rants, but I do see the pain and depression my dad was going through. Really they do such a great job at humanizing Clay despite how much of a piece of shit he is. I really like the final scene where he is walking down the hallway and overhears Orel and his mom talking about why she married him and after the conversation he follows her to bed but before he glances up at the picture of Clay with his family before going to bed. Clay is a terrible person, but he like many alcoholics is suffering greatly.

it hurts like hell how scary familiar this feels has a child of a abusive addict Christian parent, this is far too common for with my family as well which makes it even more terrifying too..

The most disturbing thing, to me at least, is how satisfied Clay looks after shooting Orel.

Clay made be a fucked up guy but Cecil was more fucked up than Clay. But In thrid final episode of the season and oh Boy, it was so dark and depressing which led to it's cancellation. Creepler is considered the main reason for the cancellation of Moral Orel. His more serious characterization proved to be so dark that it partially led Adult Swim to cancel the show after reading an early draft of the episode "Alone".

Clay would have turned out rough just from his childhood, but he was genuinely a good man who was misguided until he got tricked and taken advantage of by Blobertta. The clip where she admonishes him for "not wanting Shapey" even though Shapey was the product of her infidelity really shows how awful she was to him. Clay's drinking and horrible parenting skills (a product of him not wanting any kids to begin with) are all DIRCECT results of Bloberrta putting him on that path, and she knows this and hates him for it. He's awful now, sure, but we should all acknowledge that he would never have been this bad without his horrible wife. When she leaves Orel's room and Clay catches her sobbing, possibly from how scared she was that Orel could have died and also possibly because she knows how horrible Clay is now due to her putting him on the drinking path, she doesn't own up to anything or talk about anything to Clay. She just walks off and refuses to talk to him.

I love how they both act like the victim even tho they constantly hurt each other. Like a regular relationship 😂

The tapping of the ice in Clays drinks always makes me so thirsty 😫

In orel movie when he showed his dad in a " puppy" form because he is "loyal" and "nice" but he ends up looking like his true form a snarling, sadistic, and evil wolf monster

This episode truly grabbed at emotions and feelings although my father was never this man(and never would be)I feel for friends of myne I grew up with that had father's like this...Many times as a kid I witnessed depravating actions from they're fathers and always felt fortunate to have a good dad that was there for me...through thick and thin...but this episode tore at my heartstrings and brought tears to me in wonderment of why and how these things happen.I think this show could have been the best teaching tool to even the addicted and weak.Just ashame it had to be cancelled in it's prime...there is nothing wrong with the dark views of life as long as you learn from them.

My grandpa loved this show, I don't know if he's watched it recently, but, when he did watch it he liked it so much he even bought it on DVD.

Clay Puppington is my favorite character on Moral Orel. Don’t get me wrong, he’s completely deplorable, but on a character study level, he’s absolutely fascinating. It’s a crime this show didn’t get its full story.

it has more impact on the viewer when you have witnessed the development of these characters unravel

the first time telling your alcoholic father hes "too drunk" is very uncomfortable. when you grow up with a parent who drinks as heavily as clay (yes they do exist), you sort of normalize the behavior in your head. and as a kid you may almost feel like youre overreacting or being rude about it. i remember one time after dinner with my dad and bf, my bf mentioned to me "your dad drinks a lot." and i had to actually stop and think because even as an adult i shut off my ability to notice my dad drinking. theres also the fear that, as a kid, if you tell your father that his alcoholism is scaring you he might just explode and become violent. Nature is about Orel finally acknowledging that his father is a broken man everything is so well-done in this season finale and watching it honestly makes me pretty uncomfortable. everything. the way clays face changes as he stares down orel at the camp, the way he loses his shit and devolves into some blubbering mess, the way orel tries to calmly talk to this unreasonable scumbag who is only trying to antagonize him. ive had to use that exact same cautious tone of voice many times with my own dad this show is very important to me because i find it almost cathartic to be able to confront that fear i had as a kid and to be able to see that others went through it and its NOT normal, or shouldnt be. im convinced at least one of the people on the writing team grew up with a dad like clay. its just too real

8:26 is what really broke my heart. Putting all of the heavy stuff on Orel. What can he do? He’s a child having to deal with adult situations and that just hurts

I find it strange that there was no real consequence for clay shooting Orel…like at all…

Apparently what was planned that Orels mom would end up with the cop after he divorced his wife and they had a good relationship There was no happy ending for his dad

It must take so much time & effort to do a visual gag like 4:08 in a stop motion show. This kind of thing is why I have tons of respect for stop motion animators. Also, it's sad & creepy the way the camera is used as Clay's perspective until he dissociates to enter his bedroom & pretend to be okay while lying next to a wife he doesn't wanna be with & yet probably hates himself for mistreating. Especially the way he looked at the door he left open but couldn't even be bothered to get back up & close it.

Clay has to be my favourite character, he is such an interesting traumatic character who I somehow feel sad for, but also think he deserves everything terrible that happens to him, passing is probably my favourite episode, it was one of a few episodes that made me tear up and it perfectly shows who he is and why he is the person that he became, he is a truly terrible human being, but such a complex one.

I think that the most important takeaway here is that children are incapable of being """""narcissists""""" and that yes, he was a spoiled brat but that's because of the way he was raised by a mother who didn't know how to own up to her behavior and was extremely delusional (I guess she was going insane anyway, i don't know, i don't care.) And a lot of children of abusers in the comments. Myself included. My father spoke like Clay sometimes, I don't know how to feel about that.

This is one of the rare moments I've said "Oh my god I remember this episode" and been mors scared than hype. Even as an adult, in fact I think the scene hits harder as an adult, Clay's breakdown shakes me to my damn core

i dunno if anyone else has pointed this out, and maybe i'm reading too much into it, but when orel tells clay that he killed the bear, i feel kind of like it was pointing out more blatant hypocrisy in the "i don't remember so it didn't happen" statement, as well as rejecting his father's happiness as mentioned in the video he didn't remember shooting orel, so it didn't happen! he didn't remember killing the bear, but doesn't really make an attempt to question orel in saying so because it wasn't as bad as shooting his son sorry if this doesn't make a lot of sense, or if it's a bit of a reach, but i just thought that line itself is very interesting :)

"Bright means the opposite. It means sudden withering death... Who am I kidding? My life IS full of bright." Clay is covered in flies and the devil is called "lord of the flies" sometimes. Clay has basically become the devil as a coping mechanism for how unloved and unfortunate he feels. His cruelty and hatred of life are ways of lashing out at god. He drinks to not feel and to cover up his self-hatred. Drinking gives him the confidence to be sadistic which fuels his self-hatred which makes hate life and resent everyone more and therefore become more sadistic. My point is he didn't misspeak. Clay hates life, brightness, innocence, which are all reminders of god's oppression from his perspective. "Hate away, sister, hate away"

the flies on Clay are also a biblical reference

When the Nature episode came out I was a kid who would stay up and watch adult swim, my dads an alcoholic too so the entire episode had me on edge in the worst possible way.

This was a really neat video essay on a great show. I literally just finished watching the show and it was a ride. I’m glad Vexingflame and you made me get interested in it, because I loved watching it. Clay is basically a great interpretation of a victim becoming a victimizer, he didn't have a great start with his delusional overbearing mom and his dad turning abusive after her death but things literally only kept getting worse and the only redeeming thing he'd ever done is make Orel- and even then he couldn't appreciate him or show him actual honest affection.

Scott did a fantastic job voicing Clay.

I think the most tragic thing about the show is that Morel is what Clay loves more than anything. But he’s far too broken as a man to convey it.

Little fun fact, the season 1 finale was actually the first episode actually aired. Wasn't til later the started the show for real and we got the context for everything leading up to it.

I haven't seen this show but damn this scene makes me intrigued. Awesome video!

What I find most interesting is that despite all this in the end clay still shows some remorse but even he knows he’s beyond redemption

I'm haphappy that people online are just now recognizing the brilliance of this show. It is my favorite animated show of all time. There's so much to unpack in this show.

I have now finally seen this show and I all have to say that it’s great!, I really want to make a One Villainous Scene video at one point.

One of the things that make Clay one of the worst is because he simply doesn't want to change. Now, I know it's not easy to do so, specially in a situation where most of the people in his life are toxic. But he did have instances where he could have take a good path, and didn't. Why? Because he's a coward. His abusive father had a change of heart after meeting his kid. He told Clay they could start again. I get why he said no, after all, Arthur didn't do anything all these years and hurt him so much, Arthur lost his wife but forgot that his child lost his mother too. But at the same thing, Clay saying no is ironically the same thing his father did to him: He didn't thought about his son having a good relationship with his grandfather, he instead though about his own problems. Hell, he could have said 'I don't forgive you. But it's obvious you were good with Orel and he likes you, so I'll allow it.' Just let things happen, nothing else. I would say the second time was Orel himself. It's obvious Orel's personality comes from Clay, specially the one in his young 20s. He could have thought about how his own father's 'love' didn't do anything good for him, and try to do something else to Orel. It wouldn't be easy, again, but that's the point.

Damn. Thas dark and deep. Pretty interesting show ngl.

Clay is without a doubt the darkest and most realistic villain from Adult Swim. Just a egotistical, vindictive drunk of a father. I read somewhere that Bloberta was supposed to have somewhat of a redemption arc and end up with Papermouth. Which I would’ve loved to have seen tbh It would’ve ended with Clay alone with alcohol and the ‘commandments’

My mother was an alcoholic and severely bipolar and I got taken away by cps when I was 11 and Clay’s monologue broke my heart with how hard I related it to my mother, especially when later we see Orel realise how terrible his father is and give up on trying to impress him

Yep, that's what happens when you point out the drinking to an alcoholic. They get mad, red in the face, blame everyone else around them for their problems and try to use that as justification for their drinking saying it's "the only thing that helps." But you take the alcohol away and that's even worse.

I hate alcoholics, some of the worst people you can ever be around. I have very little sympathy for them since a lot of them don't get help. I especially hate alcoholics who hurt children. if you are an alcoholic that managed to quit drinking and go to therapy then you should be praised since you did an honorable deed.

Clay is one of those horribly irredeemable characters we can all relate to in one way or another.

To add a little more info to this, in season 3, Clay tells Orel that he was glad to have shot his son. What a douche.

Yeah, Clay is tragic more than horrible. He's like how he is now because he was pulled down and expected to act a certain way when he didn't want to. People forget that Clay's Bi, never drank before getting married and really didn't want to get married. His breakdown here is towards his wife whom to be real ruined him because she "needed" to be married. Clay would have most likely left town to be "normal". Bloberta is the true villain of the series, Clay is so upfrontly bad it makes you look at others closer on purpose. That's when you see how bad that town is Moral is legit screwed all because his mom being selfish.

Just watched this and and the first 2 eps of season 3 and holy wow, this hit a lot. The more i watch this show, the more i saw it was really ahead of it's time. It does really well when handling dark topics alcoholism. Which i didnt see until i watched Bojack Horseman. Wish i gave this show chance and this show wasn't cancelled, because it's good and as depressing and hard-hitting as it is, cathartic for me

Dammn I used to watch the show when I was younger, a few clips on RU-vid. After watching this, I need to watch it, I didn’t know it was like that. Just thought it was a regular robot chicken show. Also The way you ended this video, amazingg for that clip.

The only good thing Clay has ever done is bringing Orel into the world and that’s it.

this might be a bit late, though it is noticeable that there is a blue crane in most episodes of Moral Orel, usually it is sign of innocence and in this episode, right after Orel shot the gun- the blue crane left and is seen flying away. It could be some kind of symbol that his innocence has been tainted/ruined.
