Avatar: The Last Airbender is an absolutely incredible show and Leaves From The Vine is guaranteed to make you cry every single time. The reason I never really considered it for a piano cover is due its simplicity. It's just four bars and two chords. So to expand it, I added quite a bit of variations and some additional chord progression that goes beyond what you hear in the show. It's definitely meant to be ear candy.

@@tahamohammad1741 what’s even more sad was that when he was singing, Mako was shown the picture of his younger self, making him very emotional, on account that he wasn’t the young, healthy man he once was, which is why Iroh’s singing and the way he expresses his emotions is so authentic.

My grandfather passed away due to cancer this January and I began watching the series again. When I got to Tales of Ba Sing Se the tribute of mako reminded me of my grandfather so when I miss him I just come to this song and play it.

A few years ago, I lost my grandfather to cancer, who I tragically took for granted. He was kind and generous, and me being a selfish and spoiled child, never quite thanked him enough or truly appreciated him. Even though he was suffering with lung cancer, he didn't let his agony affect the way he treated others. He was always so patient and loving, I just wish I could have been better to him. I regret all the things I did, and I'm still in a rough place now... But I know I'll find my way, and come marching home.

Fun fact. The photo in that episode, wasn't just a photo. It was the last note his son ever wrote to him before dying in combat. It reads something along the line that he will come marching home after securing victory and he will see Iroh again soon. Also Rest In Peace Mako. 💔

I have a little suggestion that might enhance the listening experience even more than it already is: Slow down the video to 0.75 It makes the song so much sadder and more meaningful that way, and I think by slowing it down it truly becomes Iroh's theme.

The real-life story surrounding this song is quite touching. Season 2, Episode 15 "The Tales of Ba Sing Se" was Mako Iwamatsu's (Iroh's Voice Actor's) last episode, as he had been diagnosed with esophageal cancer and passed a few weeks after the recording. Because the episode was yet to be animated and aired at the time of his passing, the studio wanted to do something in memoriam to him. The picture of Lu Ten is actually Mako when he was younger, only edited to fit the plot. The song "Leaves From the Vine" was dedicated to Mako's military service, as he was also a soldier. Because the song was the last lines Mako would read/sing for the series, Greg Baldwin - the man who took over voicing Iroh - refuses to sing it to fans at Meet and Greet's out of respect, as he says, "That's Mako's song".

The irony is that Iroh spent the entire day helping out the people of Ba Sing Se before mourning his son. The original comment was talking about him helping people, but I believe Ahmad was saying "his Son was lost to Ba Sing Se, but technically his Son was the one attacking it."

I burst into tears every time I hear, or read "Little soldier boy". I've survived cancer myself, was declared cancer-free earlier this year. And I can tell that, living with the facts aren't actually as bad as most people think. It's all a way of life, and you make the most of it. You sort of get used to it, in a way. But receiving the confirmation, and sharing it with my parents. I can't describe the experience, there are just no words for it. No person should have to live through that. Rest in Peace Mako, I wish your loved once the best!

@@joshko9946 The OG voice actor for General Iroh passed away in the middle of book 2 I think, that's why Iroh stopped appearing with voice lines until towards the end. His replacement I admit was amazing, and did SUCH a good job, but....Mako......Mako...fuck man.
