Leaving Narcotics Anonymous: My Recovery From Recovery

I made this series on Tiktok to share my story, not the typical recovery narrative maybe - but one I felt needed to be out there for others having doubts.
I recommend the Facebook group ‘Life After 12 Step Recovery’ for anyone else struggling with transition. Whether your goal is to remain abstinent, or moderate, full recovery is possible. I also recommend the documentary ‘The 13th Step’ - it’s a hard watch but what I saw in NA is far from unusual and awareness is growing.

Thank you for speaking out against NA here in America this is practically a firing squad worthy offense

Thank you for making this. I just started NA a month and a half ago, and I've already dealt with so much sexual predatory behaviour, from the group leaders and older cleaner members.

Former male member of NA here and I fully believe what are saying is true, one of the things I hated seeing the most is men with a good amount of clean time prey on the white key tag especially the ones who come off the rehab busses.

It’s so impactful listening to you speak about your life experiences. As the mother of a child who used substances to self medicate for years, I was made to feel naive and manipulated when I tried to turn the focus from the drug use to the mental health recovery. No hurt meant to the many who have been helped by NA, but it sounds not far off from a cult itself. Thank you for sharing!

I’m so sorry 😞 It seems to happen so much that people who use drugs are labled as manipulative and those who love them labled as enablers, it’s rarely anything that simple. It’s getting more understood now how much trauma and mental health can lead to or worsen addiction, but treatment services are still stuck in the idea that the addiction has to be treated first and separately. I think a lot of that comes from the influence of 12 step programs on professional services to be honest, in the programs there’s a lot of denial of mental health issues, pressure on people to come off meds, dismissive attitudes towards therapy, and ignoring scientific evidence of how addiction works. I hope you and your family are having an easier time now, thank you for commenting ☺️

I was in NA for 26 years and have been out of it for 3 years. I spoke to an ex sponsor today that said my addiction is untreated and i am crazy. I have had mental health issues for many years and I do not even really believe in any of the NA stuff. I feel it is important form to not buy into the dogma of other people in NA. I do not need it and although i strugle, i also a struggled a lot in NA.

Just listening to this story has put into words so many of the things I've thought and felt over the years of so-called being in recovery and dealing with 12 step programs. Awesome to hear this, and I'm sure many others need to hear it as well.

You said the old timers with the most clean time are the sickest. For w/e reason, I've noticed the best people to listen to in that program always seem to have between 5-10 yrs (not all of them), but an overwhelming majority of people. After 10 years, people become complacent or something bad eventually happens to them and they can't deal with it without engaging in the old behaviors like homewrecking and other shit like that. Thank you for bringing this point up, though.

Thank you for sharing your story with the world, this stuff needs to be spoken about far more in this manner. The way that you speak and explain is so helpful and calm, you have done sooo amazingly well to get where you are today, i feel really proud of you 💜 Raised in a ‘cult’ (JW) myself, i identify those red flags everywhere (took a long time to reprogram the old brain!!) All the best sweetheart, keep doing what you’re doing, keep being you x

Thank you so much! My family background was with the JWs too, they left just after I was born, and I grew up during their very challenging deprogramming years. I didn’t understand when I was tiny but me and my mam have talked a lot about deprogramming and ex-cult trauma since I left NA, they all went through so much and I’ve definitely gained a better understanding of it from my experiences.

@@kirizal4627 been watching your tiktoks for a while and i had a niggling feeling from your journey that you had been involved with them somehow honestly 🤷🏻‍♀️ I believe that all things put in our path are to teach us something (even though it might not seem like it at the time!) and over come, be stronger.. youve certainly done this with NA , and now able to help others 💜

I am a trans woman (a non binary and androgyny one), and I have experienced very complex issues, I was just addicted to marijuana, but it was really hurting me, in 17 years of use, I relapsed a few times, I was already 60 days clean when I went to NA, and I have been feeling things so heavy, it's good to be able to say that I feel good without using drugs, however, the NA environment is very exhausting, thank you for sharin

I like NA but it’s not for everyone. And like any group. There may be toxic people in that group that one needs away from. But I agree with you. There are alternatives to NA that may be better for different people
