There have been lots of great defensive guards like Payton, Paul, Kidd, Stockton, etc. We usually judge them based on steals, but MJ was able to guard and block dominant bigs like Dominique, Ewing, and Hakeem. That second three-peat Bulls squad (especially before Pippen's back issues) was scary. Jordan was the best defensive guard in the league, Pippen was the best defensive wing in the league, and Rodman was the best defensive big. The triangle offense was tough to stop, but they were one of the best defensive squads ever. I don't know how you can argue that LeBron is the better player.
I remember Bruce Willis said in a movie, "I am the best because I work with the best". This is the same with Lebron, he appears the best because he surrounds himself with superstars not just one. The array of appearances in the Finals made it easy, but if all by himself... he's just a regular guy that could be stopped by a JJ Barea.
Just imagine if Jordan doesn't break his foot the beginning of his second year (missed 64 games), and doesn't retire the first time, his stats would be almost untouchable.

@@sportstalknow5507 They beat Detroit when Rodman was a Piston. Jordan won plenty of playoff games without Pippen. He just couldn't get past Detroit until Pip came into his own. Jordan didn't get a "super team" until the 72-10 season which was his 4th title. The other part is, Jordan didn't go looking for Rodman to join the Bulls. Jerry Krause, the GM, built those teams. No superstar free agent was looking to join up together back then the way they do now. It wasn't something you did back then. You just focused on becoming better than the next man to beat him. NOT joining him.
I think what separated him from the rest is how always reacted after making a steal, a block or a pass. You see him sprinting back once he sees his teamate gets the ball or looks down the court to make a play when saving a ball. He follows the ball on the steal if its a loose ball etc etc. He never stops. Never thinks ok the play is over. He goes 100% all the time. It was amazing to watch.

Miller in the latter part of his career? Hell Klay Thompson is better than almost every shooting guard MJ faced lol the 90s is a watered down expansion era with diluted talent. They aren't better than today's players. Period.
Jordan was the most complete player there’s ever been. He was just as lethal on defense as he was on offense. He was a 9 time all defensive first team selection, led the league in steals 3 times, won a DPOTY, and still has the most blocks for a SG in league history. If he was having an off night scoring, he’d “just” lock down the other player.

Im glad that Chicago is the closest team to St. Louis, so I followed them almost by default. Then he made it all make sense. Then when he retired, the other city I had lived in won, Houston. So basketball in the 90s was very satisfying for me. I would have hated to been from one of those other places.

When the Bulls were on, we’d actually stop playing outside & come in to watch the game, so we’d get to watch Jordan. Every time he was on, it was must watch tv.
My first time watching MJ live was the 91 finals. My brother asked my mom so we could stay up late. I was in the 4th grade. My entire class was allowed to watch the finals. We lived in FL. MJ was huge.
Heck yeah. I am from Chicago and was in like 8th grade when the Bulls drafted him. I never, and I mean never, paid attention to the Bulls as they were terrible. A few weeks into his first season and it was exactly how you said, we would stop playing and go in to watch MJ play.

I just want to say… anytime I see younger people, many say Lebron is the GOAT. However, anytime they really dive into Michael Jordan, they ALWAYS end up realizing that Jordan is the best to ever do it. You can still be a Lebron fan while recognizing that Jordan is on a different level. He is the unicorn that nobody will ever catch.
I would disagree. Lebron plays against better all around talent, more sophisticated defense, and more overall athletic ability in the league which again contributes to better defense. Gone are the days of slow players who had to grab you to play any form of defense. Now players have the speed to actually stay in front of you, defenses use the whole team now to lock players down. In Jordans era he beats one white dude on the perimeter and the defense collapses immediately, its not that impressive.

I feel where you're coming from as I had missed out on Muhammad Ali's fighting prime (I'm 51) and couldn't believe someone from my era (Sugar Ray Leonard; Tyson; Holyfield, etc) wasn't better. Then I saw video of prime Ali from the 60's/70's and was humbled! Athletes like Willie Mays, Jim Brown, etc. would be great in any era. Jordan is at the top of that list and will one day sit on the throne in Sports Valhalla.
MJ had a 46" vertical, bro. His defense was actually his specialty. He had 259 steals and 132 blocks in the same season he avgd 35ppg and he almost put up the same defensive numbers when he avg 37ppg. Alex English was a beast, too. Look him up whenever you get a chance.
What people ignore is his motor....its non stop, high energy. Also his strength...the ability to lean and contort his body in mid air(Artest and Horry contest to comparison of Lebron). His athletic ability was insane as hell too. Lastly...the only time he was asked to have the ball in his hands like Lebron...he avg 32/8/8....the all around game was there as well. I thought the first time I saw Lebron as a rookie..I was like holy shit, I may see someone actually better than Jordan....it never manifested into that. Lebron best player of his generation and all time great...just not better than Jordan.

I’ve watched basketball all the way up to the present day. This is a video compilation of MJs D, but you have to believe me when I say that he ALWAYS played like this. Like every game. Never took the foot off the pedal. Preseason, pickup games, AS games, when he was 40 on the Wizards, the flu game. Didn’t matter. You were the enemy and he wanted to destroy you. Maximum effort and skill with a killer instinct. The greatest competitor I’ve ever seen in any sport.

I always say that when it comes to your favorite player, stick with who you like... Personally, my fav is Hakeem Olajuwon. Your favorite player can be whoever you want it to be for whatever reason. However, when it comes to the GOAT there is only one - Michael Jordan. These highlights give you a taste of how he demoralized opposing teams. Not only was Jordan dropping 40+ on them, but he was also suffocating them with his defensive intensity.
This one shows what led to most of the highlight dunks … the half court clips shows his superb athleticism, and ability to finish at the cup … and also why most NBA fans back then went to their teams games when the Bulls came to town.
I love that they let that last clip roll. Pretty much everyone knows that iconic shot he hit to win the game, but most don't realize that he got that opportunity because of his relentless defense. The late 80s and early 90s were my favorite era because it was very well balanced in terms of scoring and defense. Late 90s became much focused on defense causing many players having lower fg% And slow offense pacing. Now the recent years is the opposite, the players rarely play down the clock shoot much from outside and defend less close, avoiding being crossed but letting too much space for the opponent to move or to shoot.
When you were able to watch almost every game of his it’s not that you’re a fan boy it’s just that he was different than anything you ever saw before or after. GOAT 🐐

The hardest thing to get from just watching highlights is the anticipation watching whole games. It was like you held your breath the whole game because more than anything else MJ was unpredictable. You knew something amazing was about to happen but you never knew what it would be.

Also remember, he averaged 30+ without shooting 3's in a much more contact NBA. No contest in this now more of a stat chasing game. LeBron would've played against some of the great power forwards in the game, not small forwards. The likes of the next defensive genius of the game, like "the Worm", Dennis Rodman.

This is what happens when you’re a freak athlete, one of the smartest players in the game, the greatest competitor and gifted with long arms and huge hands. Jordan doesn’t get enough credit for being so smart. He was in the right place on defense so often, the play with Barkley in the post is terrific. He would not let Barkley feel him, thus not knowing where he was so Barkley couldn’t seal him.

@thepurintosityking Yes and now imagine him with an open lane and still lightning fast without a big or 2 parked in the lane. Jordan would take on the entire opposing team and the physicality he endured was scary. Every game he played against Detroit, NY or Miami and several other teams I thought this is it. I thought he would be permanently injured and we wouldn’t be able to see this incredible player anymore. But every time he got up and kept going. If you look at today’s game you see players not being allowed to play defense with the lane wide open and after beating someone off the dribble the perimeter wide open. You have new rules that allow gathering the ball which used to be called a travel. All the rules are in place to benefit the scorer and make defending more difficult. Of course for the fans you want to see action and I think that what defenses used to get away with in most of Jordan’s years was dangerous so a balance of the 2 I think would be better. Money talks and people want to see offense so I see a game today I barely recognize compared to the 80s and 90s.

Jordan had an anal retentive attitude on the court for sure, he had to beat you and that definitely made him a great defensive player. That being said, LeBron has taken players in this era (where you cant just grab people like jordan did), and he has shut down some of the greatest offensive players of all time. In miami when he faced D rose and those bulls, Rose was MVP and he was Unstoppable, everyone claimed it and he truly was special in that season - LeBron smothered him with ease. Go watch those tapes instead of ignoring them. LeBron carries teams with scoring, passing, point guard duties AND he is able to defend the best player on the court positions 1-4 and sometimes 5's. Jordan was great, sure nobody is taking that away from him - however the same hand checking that he had to compete with on offense, he could use on defense which makes defense MUCH easier. Again something people completely dismiss, when you can grab players defense becomes easier, steals are easier, predicting passes are easier, moving players the way you want them to move is easier. Imagine LeBron putting his hands on players TODAY (not back in the 90's when the league average bench press was 135 lbs), Lebron would carry players off the court with ease today. Lebron had to become a defender without hand checking - and he STILL excelled in an era where there has been an offensive explosion. And please dont come back and say lebron wouldnt be able to handle the 90's...if Jordan who was a buck 90 could then Lebron who is 240-245 would have had absolutely NO issues both on offense and ESPECIALLY on defense.

Jordan weighed about 215-220 during his championship years and he never left Chicago to join a super team to win a championship. Jordan in fact would have no problem offensively vs Lebron as most experts have agreed. On defense, Jordan was as strong as a big as many bigs including Oakley, Horry and Grant have attested to. Even with the argument that Lebron had to become a defender without hand checking, imagine Jordan’s output if there was no hand checking. The only thing that makes sense in your argument was that Jordan was anal retentive. Yes he was sickly anal retentive and he would have used that fact and his determination and will to completely dominate this era just as he dominated the 80s and 90s. These are just facts that you can look up and remember Jordan never said he was the greatest but pretty much everybody else did. We all know what Lebron said and we know that only younger people like his contemporaries may agree with this self aggrandizement.
Alex English was an incredibly prolific scorer, and Mike literally was taking his game away from him. Unreal. Also note how many times he gets the steal, scores the bucket, and the announcer says, "and the Bulls take the lead." These were done in close games when the Bulls needed an edge. MJ gave them that edge.
Jordan was doing all of this on legends of the game that were taller and bigger than he is... And in a time that was far more physical than today... No doubt that LeBron would have been great back then, but MJ today with these rules would be killer...
One of the major differences between Jordan and anyone else-- watching Jordan, it was just a matter of time before he took over the game. It happened nearly every game. There was never a question who was the best player in the league... in fact, like given the chance to take the top 3 players besides Jordan, you'd still take Jordan.

92 playoffs game 7 against the Knick’s. Jordan was getting handled in the series until it was go time with a game 7. He goes off and was unstoppable. A great watch. The man defines clutch.
The thing was, he did this every game. Every. Single. Game. 9 time all defensive team. It wasn't a fluke. Every game. I watched him at a game once get 19 points off of steals alone in a single game, with 52 total points that night. He also had 12 assists that game, too.

That last sequence of events with th steal from Malone is the most iconic and yet the least ironic. The possession before that steal he made a layup. It takes more energy to play defense than playing offense. Everyone's amazed how Jordan still not tired even in last seconds of the game. The Jordan Rules defense by the Bad Boys Pistons really meant to wear down Jordan physically and mentally yet even with that adversity he still scored a lot and played real defense at the same time.

The thing that separates him is/was his drive. If he was lacking at something or if there was an obstacle in his path, he worked to improve in order to get over the hump. Players today don't change their game. Watching him do this live was a blessing. When you're sitting there not knowing what to expect , sitting at the edge of your chair during crunch time, and to watch him raise his game up in the biggest moments and will his team to victory, its like nothing I've ever seen in any sport, even to this day. With the game on the line or whatever the team needed to win Jordan came through. He was the ultimate cheat code! Even Tom Brady lost championship games. Jordan did not lose championships. Jordan did not scavenge the league and recruit the best players on other teams to help him win!!! Jordan did not team hop and go join other teams to win championships!!! He lead his teams to victory with skill, willpower, and dominance... and his shoes is doper than anybody else's still to this day😂😁
When the Pistons where pounding him into the ground after the second time instead of relaxing he and Pippen and Grant all spent their entire offseason that year in the freaking Gym Jordan had installed at his house in Chicago where Jordan on his own paid one of the best trainers in the USA to come in and work them out for hours. They came back the next season over 20 pounds heavier and it was all muscles. With a new attitude of we are going to destroy the NBA. They did for the next 3 years. I think if his father had not been murdered he may not have retired for those 2 years that really shook him up. People forget that he and his father where close as could be. When he came back and won it in 96 and closed it out on Father's day for over 1 hour he just sat in the locker room after the game crying saying he wished his dad had been there.
