The Los Angeles Lakers fell to the Houston Rockets in overtime after LeBron James passes up on a final shot that could have won the game for them in overtime. Ric Bucher joins First Things First and lays out why LeBron's decision to hand the game deciding shot over to Carmelo Anthony is exactly why the star isn't seen as a top scorer, and why he should have taken the shot himself.

I think the issue is dominance for the goat debate. Michael ramped up and took over the league until his second retirement. After he reached the top (in a league where they could slow raw talent with brute force) no one ate on his watch. Lebron has been the greatest player in the world for a long time, and even building his own teams wasn't able to hold off or even dominate the league. He didn't back to back to back. Yeah he is crazy durable and focused on his body in a scorers league, but he couldn't reign at the top. He could only climb there every few years.

Saying a player who dominated 19 plus years is disrespectful. Especially when it all comes down to playing styles. LeBron is more Magic ie a point forward so kicking out to a open teammate shouldn’t be issue! Boobie, Mo, Korver, or whoever gets paid million upon millions of dollars to make a wide open shot. Jordan style is Jordan style. Bron style is Bron style. One shouldn’t be forced to play like another 🤷🏾‍♂️ So Nick is correct when some people talk as if MJ is God himself. It’s not about dominating like Jordan it’s about dominating in the riskiest moments. That’s in every sport. Tom Brady 2 minute less drills, baseball bottom of the 9th 2 outs bases loaded, etc…Are you capable of being great on command when your opponent is bringing their best. That’s why you want to see the best go head up. You can’t say you’re the best when you pass up moments to win it. They praise Jordan for passing to Kerr because they know Jordan has done it over and over and it was growth for him to trust his teammate over taking complete control. Lebron can defer the pressure to a teammate and gives you a “basketball play” excuse when we really he avoided risk. We’ve had this conversation too many times to say that its a good decision to pass it now. How many times has this been successful?Just take the risk.

This is why nick said that last point though.. no defending lebron on that play, it was a clearly a horrible play by him. But now you’re saying Jordan would’ve done this. He’s not Jordan and it is what it is. Come up big in the biggest moments. Literally the only time he’s never done that was in 2011. But now a random regular season game against a horrible team means he’s not clutch and never was throughout his career. The over reactions to it is comical. It’s not that it’s a good decision to pass, sometimes it’s really not but we hang on to every close game thag lebron has ever had and judge him. Tomorrow if he hits a game winning buzzer beat the bron fans are gonna go crazy saying he’s clutch and the Jordan stans are gonna say it was a lucky shot and he doesn’t do it enough. We’ve seen this play out for his whole career. The real issue is the 24hr media cycle over analyzing every play that lebron does in attempt to either make him a hero or a villain and fans fall for it and make horrible debates that don’t make sense every time.
@welcome2thekingdom
@welcome2thekingdom 2 года назад
@@yeahaight1163 agreed…very rational point. I only say I never say “Jordan wouldn’t of done this” because I understand the object of the game is not to play like Jordan but to be the best player you can be. Lebron is Lebron. I don’t knock passing it but it never feels like it’s just basketball. It always feel like he has an excuse ready for why he chose to avoid a risk.
@jackzanetti6235
@jackzanetti6235 2 года назад
@@yeahaight1163 In actuality, being clutch has very little to do with who scores the ball. It is about making the right decisions at the end of the game to result in a win for your team. The reason people have these conversations regarding Lebron is exactly what Ric said. Nobody wants Boobie with the ball at the end of the game. Sure if he is wide open for a shot make the pass, but quite often Lebron chooses to pass the ball to his teammates who aren't clutch and this is where the issue arises. There is a reason Jordan/Kobe etc took those shots most of the time. They were the best player on the floor and had the ability to remain cool under pressure and make a shot. Also they were always willing to accept the outcome if it were negative. I once heard someone tell an MJ story where he said why would I worry about missing a shot I haven't even taken yet. That a what Lebron does. He worries about missing the shot at the end or missing the free throw and makes the pass. But if the player you pass to is less clutch than you are the right basketball play will more often than not give you the wrong basketball result. And for what it's worth, this was a pass to Melo who is a killer as well but now we have people including Nick saying it was the wrong play, but it was right to pass to George Hill under the basket between 2 defenders. While I do agree with you on what you've said, MJ and Kobe's teams probably aren't gonna win more often if you're shooting 7 for 33. Yeah sure it's about that mentality, but on the flip side, you can say that passing to get the better or best shot and helping get your teammates involved is also a winning mentality. If LeBron has an off night with his scoring, then passing is another way for him to get involved and win. All about perspective. The only reason why LeBron gets hammered all the time about his passing is because MJ who many consider the GOAT had that 'killer' I'm gonna shot this shot no matter what type of mentality and he wins 6 championships that's why his 'killer' mentality is the standard. If LeBron had won 7 rings with how he played throughout his career, pretty sure people would now Crown his passing first mentality as the standard in the GOAT debate. Not saying LeBron is gonna get 7 let alone his 5th. But yeah.
