Infuriating!!!!!!! 49 yr old Rover and electrics have been completely unmolested, 48 yr old Stag lights some previous owners have been really bodging!!!!! Definitely going to get it sorted!!!!
When you use LED bulbs in the indicators, the bulbs need to be a ballast type or they won't flash. Older tungsten filament bulbs have a higher current draw, which makes the flasher unit resistance work, the familiar click, clunk, click as the contacts open and close. LED bulbs don't use as much current, so need an electrical load to work.
All the lamp lenses on the front, and rear lights on a P6 should have silver foil separation from new. It's a D shape, glued on the flat edge where they slide together. They often come loose and go missing. Without it, you get excess light bleed into the adjoining coloured lamp lenses, especially on the clear front side, and reverse ones.
@jagandthestag Hi there. I've had dozens of P6's since the late 70's, know them inside out, and worked on many Stag's too. Yes, I've seen some P6's with a foil like reflector behind the bulb, an effort to improve the output from old tungsten filament bulbs. The backlng reflectors respond well to a coat of chrome effect aerosol paint. No, what I mean is stuck on to the actual plastic lense from new. It is a thick aluminium foil, similar guage to what you get on bakery pie cases etc. Any aluminium foil would be an ideal replacement if missing. It's usually glued on the top or bottom of each segment of lense, it should be stuck on the flat D shaped bit so the light from each bulb doesn't affect the adjoining lamp. It will probably affect yours even more with bright LED bulbs. I know it'll be exempt now, but a really keen MOT tester would pick up on it as " one light affecting the operation of another". You'll probably notice it much more at night with the brighter bulbs. The Stag sounds like a wrong bulbholder. The reverse and indivators lamps should each have a single contact 12volt 21W bulb and matching bulbholder, and should earth through the lamp body. Only the Stop/tail bulbholder should have two contacts, and a 12volt 21/5W bulb with the two locating pins at different heights on the bulb base.
