Low Level Laser Emission Devices or Light Emitting Diode treatments & Skin
Dermatologists are well versed in the use of light to treat skin conditions. Phototherapy can treat acne, psoriasis, vitiligo, & dermatitis. Light can also treat conditions such as seasonal affective disorder, back pain and aid in tissue recovery.
Mode of action: LEDs can exert a powerful cascade of events in the skin. Blue and red
light can activate naturally occurring chemicals made by bacteria in acne lesions. LEDs can also activate chemicals called porphyrins applied to pre-cancerous sunspots. Diode LEDs can also speed up wound healing- especially useful after laser surgery.
Clinical application: Acne treatments, sunspot treatments, post laser healing, rosacea therapy (laser is better), marketed as collagen generating (optimistic :)
Skin colour treated: Fitz. skin type 1 all the way to 6. Super safe as light is delivered in wavelengths that do not promote sunburn, PIH or skin cancer
Recovery time: Minutes to days depending on the application. Simple blue - red light without photo activating chemicals- no downtime. Photodynamic therapy associated with biophotonics or porphyrins will have a 1-6 day downtime.
Aftercare: Depends on the clinical application of LEDs
Is it painful?: Anti-acne and recovery LED therapies are painless, whilst PDT or photodynamic therapy requires analgesia.
Caution: LED therapy is supersafe, in fact this is the therapy of choice for the treatment of acne in pregnancy. Watch out for photosensitive drug interactions in the blue spectrum, 405nm to 420nm.
Recommended skin care range: Sunscreen, adjunctive retinol, niacinamide. Retinoids may thin the stratum corneum however the action spectrum is in the long wave UVA range.

How does use of these blue lights correlate with the warnings about blue light we are exposed to from the sun and from electrical devices. Ie do these have the potential to potentiate the other blue light we are exposed to? Is it a use it now strategically for certain conditions that outweighs the daily buildup danger because of those results? Thanks for making this vlog.

I'd like to know the facts from a dermatologist regarding how long each at home device treatment should be & how many sessions per day or week would be recommended. After looking around, some suggest only 1 x 20 minute session per day & then others say the more use, the better the results. The specs on the LED mask I use, say the lights emit within the wavwelength parametres that are beneficial for each colour and after doing research on which wavelengths are advantageous for each colour, my mask falls within those categories. So there seems to be some conflicts. Would appreciate getting your professional opinion on this please. Many thanks.

Made a red light device myself for like 30usd + old wall adapter that i had from before. Very simple to do for most people with basic understanding in electronics. Of course it doesnt look as aesthetic as the ones you buy on but it is actually much stronger because mine consists of 300 small leds + 5 bigger ones . In total around 30w of power lol

Tried these briefly. They do not give anywhere near the 'power ' compared to medical devices. The exception is with nUVB (311nm) lamps. Narrow band light can be effective in vitiligo, psoriasis, eczema. I have trialled a few blue and red light hand held devices, however the prelim data was not great.

hi Dr I am sorry but I couldn't really hear or concentrate very well at what you were saying I was distracted by everything else going on here_ but in any case my question is "Can I do red light infrared light therapy even if I am on tretinoin regimen at night. The reason I ask since the skin supposedly becomes more sensitive to UV and so forth when using tretinoin cream. So by using red light therapy or even a home device red light therapy like a mask will this defeat the purpose of the tretinoin? Thanks

Can you explain why (in simple terms) why we have to wear sunscreen in the sun but don’t need to/what’s the difference between the light from an LED derm device? @@cj2108 Sun emits ultraviolet waves and that is the main concern. Not sure what kind of LED devices are you talking about? The one he was using was orange light, not blue light, they are different in wavelengths and therefore penetrate different amounts of skin. Btw bluelight is not bad for skin, its just bad for the eyes.

Hi Dr. Lim, I really enjoyed your videos and have been following you on Instagram as well. What's your thought on home LED device? Japan has many brands (eg. Ya-Man) that produce those devices and they are actually quite expensive, reaching up to more than $1000. Some of them even claim as effective as professional ones in the clinic. Are they safe for eyes? (I'm a radiologist and actually need my eyes for my job) I see you put eye protectors for your patients in the video but those home device never came with eye protectors.

My instruction manual for an Led & red light mask says studies have not been done on women that are PREGNANT and do not recommend for them. Manual and internet searches on the subject of EYES says it can harm the eyes. Im talking about the red light/ LED treatment. Your answers (in comments) say is NOT harmful in both situation, (pregnancy & eyes). I’m confused and hope you’ll add a part 2 for these 2 videos you’ve made on the topic. The mistake may be mine as you may have been talking about a different color light therapy. Please address these questions and which type of eye goggles are best. I see 99.8% blockage of light advertised but I’m wondering about 100% and a brand that’s trusted by dermatologists. Thank you. You’re my go-to doctor.

light are much stronger if you do a normal procedure therefore whole treatments is more efficient and take less uses to get the effect

I hsve 1 of those masks and I found it increased the Malasma spots I already had on my face. But fine lines were decreasing.

I agree with the comment that it can increase melasma. Dermatologists will often mention the possibility. So if your skin type is prone to that, you might want to skip in favor of another option. I have fair skin and not prone to melasma and found the light therapy very nice...more effective in office but still nice.

OK all sounds sensible but at 4:16 your diagram shows orange is around 650nM but at 0:37 you say you are using Orange in the 830nM area, as far as Im aware 830nM is near IR. So is the actual lamp putting out IR and the orange is just an indicator?

I wished i knew about the LED therapy earlier. There are so many good questions here, but unfortunately he doesn’t reply :( so I had to do my own research and found that it is very effective for anti aging and treating acne. I now using the Silicon LED face mask regularly at home, and already see the shocking difference in my skin! My pores have shrunk, my skin tone has improved so much, looking brighter and not dull. I was very skeptical before. The cheap LED mask wouldn’t do anything..if yes perhaps very little and alow. So don’t be fooled by cheap ones in Amazon, especially those under $100.

Hi Dr. Lim - can you please clarify if red light and or near infrared light can cause fat loss? I have read several articles that say each of those do cause fat loss and there are many companies that advertise red light for this purpose. If it melts fat, then why are people using it on their face? I already experienced fat loss on my face with radio frequency which was a terrible experience.Can you please clarify? Want to know too! I am using NuFace LED head for several months now (red , infrared, orange) and so far melasma is not getting worse. It is under control and getting lighter (just skincare... B3, mild acids, retinol and such). Still want to be reassured.

Some are sold that have many color options. The White, Yellow, and a Green light options are what helps lighten the skin or helps with redness and uneven skin tone. I noticed my freckles come out more when I got a red led Light and I started to get unever skin color! I asked around and the red led can do that. I returned it for one with all the color options. I use red light for 10 minutes and either White yellow or green for the remaining 20. And I’ve heard a few cosmetic dermatologist on RU-vid say the LEDs in the doc offices work, but not the home bought, they are much weaker 🤷🏻‍♀️😕

Incorrect. Led light therapy was first used by NASA'S medical professionals on returning astronauts who have developed skin issues and or have surgeries but their cells being dormant still as in space before, are regenerated with these color spectrum lumens.
