1973 had Robert learning how to use his new voice and Led Zeppelin's instrumental sections kept
getting tighter. New songs and new intentions, their stage presence morphed into iconic looks and colors. From the UK to Germany, their European Dates shaped the legendary moments captured on their famous Ninth US Tour across North America with the live premiere of NO QUARTER. With their fifth
album hitting the stores on March 28th, fans across the world celebrated their heavily publicized
stardom now front page without the shadow of previous contenders.

Hi JC, thanks so much for all your hard work keeping their legacy alive. I was with a friend in Kirland, a small suburb of Seattle USA years ago, no sure what exact year, but we had just parked my truck at the marina there and a guy and his girl walked right in front of us on the sidewalk. I looked closer and I said to my friend, dude, is that Jimmy Page? It was him! My stupid friend got out and started yelling, Jimmy, Jimmy!! I was like, shut the fu..ck up man, it was him as he turned and then they rushed up to the main street and jumped in a limo. I was so pissed off, if not for my friend being such a jackass, i probably would have met him and had a nice quiet chat.....

It is interesting how, to this day, a lot of people don't realize that Robert has not been able to sing like the early days since 73. Let alone being able to do it in any Zeppelin reunion. I saw them in 73. and Robert was just not up to singing any of the old stuff. Everything was rephrased and dropped to a lower register. At the time I was extremely disappointed. your videos and thorough research put great perspective on this. The led Zeppelin catalog is an incredible body of work. Robert was so young when he did that early stuff. Singing up in that range on record and then touring and hammering those vocal cords was bound to cause damage. Great job on these videos I'm really enjoying them. Thank you

Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this topic. There was a user here who said i was disrespecting Plant or being too hard on him but that wasn't my intention. The way you describe it is exactly the kind of thought i wanted to bring to the table. You are so lucky you saw then in 73 as the instrumentalists Page, Jones and Bonham were really on fire. Robert's body of work by 73 was impressive and yes, damage was caused. I appreciate your comment very much! Stay tuned for more, new videos are on the way :)

@@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories I never thought you disrespected Plant at all. You said his style and register had to change to accommodate the changes in his vocal chords. The band musicians molded around it perfectly solidifying their musical dominance. It’s not better or worse. It’s just different.
@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories
@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories Год назад
Yes as they say in Corporate America "change is inevitable how we adapt makes us stronger" but i mean it. Robert did a very good job with his new ways . It speaks a lot about their brotherhood that the band stepped up on the instrumentals!

I just can’t believe between this and 75 they did Dazed, Stairway, and Moby right in a row. Bonham’s stamina is insane. Factor in 77 with Achilles before Stairway, plus a drum solo nearly twice as long as 73... guys legs were rubber.
@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories
@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories Год назад
Haha Rubber. I like that description. Yeah...to think he could deliver night after night is mindblowing. By 1980 though his body was resenting the lack of preparation. He needed a personal trainer and things that back then were NOT discussed. He was the engine of Led Zeppelin. Thank you so much for watching :)

@@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories good insight. Love how you mentioned Plant's "new voice" helping inspire the band to write around it. I think the smaller crowd size and longer itinerary is part of the reason for the contrast between Euro 73 and the US tour coming off a bit more "corporate." One tinyyyyyy suggestion - could you let the music and bootleg clips roll longer? You basically make this content for hardcore fans, and I don't think any of us are going to fast forward if the concert excerpts are longer! If you need zep-themed help in the background music too, hit me up! I've got a zeppelin themed classical piece!

Nice work. I visited the causeway in 1999 and was able to recreate the artwork on HOTH back home with a very near appearance from the photos I took. Using photoshop and a very detailed selection of my photos I was able to capture what I felt was as close to the original pictures used by Storm (or the other people at Hipgnosis) by getting as near to the places each pic might’ve been taken from. The more distant pic for the inside was always off because I didn’t want to be standing in the water. Perhaps it might’ve been a 50mm lens or something I may not have had in my kit. I’ll never now. But seeing the opening imagery really brought me back to seeing it with my own eyes.

You can't overstate how incredible this series is. Same goes for this album, and this band. The album contains 3 of my top 10 Zep songs with The Rain Song, No Quarter, and Over The Hills And Far Away. Is there another band that had the relationship with their manager that they had ? They knew he put their interest first and it allowed them to just write the greatest rock n roll songs and then perform them live. I cringe when I read people saying they can't recreate their music live as it is on records. I don't know, if you ask me I don't want it exact to the album. No fun in that. But in my opinion, no band has done more for rock n roll in only 10 years than Led Zeppelin has. Every band after them took something from them, and if they say no.....they need look a little better at themselves. My friend....you knocked this 3 part Documentary on this album out of the park. I learned more about my favorite rock band , and confirmed a few things I've learned along the way. Thank you for allowing us come along with you on this journey. I for one truly appreciate your gift. Peace my friend.

Bill you are right on the money as Peter Grant being one of the greatest manager ever. Also i agree that live music has to be different, that's the point right? This is why i can't appreciate live Genesis past 1978 with then sounding very much like the record and i am a Genesis fan too. I am so glad and thankful this documentary shed light on new bits on information as well as confirming stuff too. I had a blast doing these, thank you so much for watching these. @@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories while they had their moments in 75-77, it was painfully obvious, I think even more so to guitar players who devoted and studied and practiced LZ tunes, that Page was "stiffer" and not nearly as "nimble" on the fretboard...granted he "broke a finger" allegedly, but it was more than that. To me the 75 tour just "sounds" like far too much "coke"...and the 77 tour is WAY too much booze and heroin. I mean objective listeners can not deny the substantial demise of their musicality. The 77 "noise" solos are the sound of a heroin addict who hasn't practiced and frankly can no longer deliver. LOVE your documentaries!!!

@@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories I applaud your journalistic integrity, as Page, tho never denying "drug use" and even calling it "an important part" of his and the bands history, has certainly never gone on the record about; what "exactly" and how much of "whatever" he had or, continues to do. Unlike say the much publicized and discussed drug use of Keith Richards, Clapton, Pete Townshend, Joe Perry, Steven Tyler etc etc etc. I mean, any discerning player and listener "knows" what's up. Again, thank you, great work, and as an aside, I really admire your guitar playing. The discipline necessary to reach your level, and to play and learn things "note for note" is admirable. Kudos.

Because i had friends who battled addiction i believe unless the person speaks first hand about it, one should respect it. Hey Jose, thanks for such a great doco on this album. It's a special on for me. I remember the first time I bought it all those years ago. It is the gateway to the mighty Physical Graffiti, which is the album that made me the Led Zep freak that I became for the rest of my life. Looking forward to one of your documentaries that opens with the first bars of that Custard Pie riff. Thanks for all your work man... you bring me back to the teenager I was back all those decades ago, where then, without internet, one could only imagine the content that you bring us today.

One thing that makes these documentaries so incredibly great is the pace at which the information is delivered. There’s not too much talking. This episode will be one of my favorite of all series to date. From the intro of No Quater, to the breakdown of the tour, to the confidence that you show was growing. Just a great episode. Let me add the cleanest version of Georgia I heard. I loved when they rolled in and out of covers. The fact that they stood on stage for sometimes 3+ hours a night was something no one of modern day would ever attempt or accomplish. I don't know if any other band was doing this at the time but one thing I do know they weren't pulling it off. As good as the Page and Plant tour was and the 02 show they were missing something and that was the spontaneity and improvisation of true Zeppelin. I can not leave out the fact that you brought to light the alternate versions. I agree, I have heard many alternate versions of Zeppelin's recordings and many including the alternate Fool In The Rain would had been much better on the final release. Maybe it's just that I need to go back and listen to everything you done but I will tell you this episode was exceptional. I strongly agree the band should be introduced to your masterful bio of the band. I'm waiting for the movie but I'm concerned it may be a dissappointment after listening to your many series. After listening to each installment I'm only left waiting an anticipating the next. Kudos my friend
@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories
@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories Год назад
Glad you enjoyed that version of Georgia, it does sound inspired right? Those 3 hours shows yes, a heroic task and with the type of material they were playing, it's really HARD. I agree on Page and Plant missing the spontaneity factor, it sounds stiff in places despite Michael Lee's best intentions. The alternate versions yes, they are a treat, that's why i bought the albums...once again lol. I'm also crossing my fingers on Becoming Led Zeppelin but from a licensing point of view it's actually difficult for any filmmaker working with them to have creative freedom, everything has to be approved, i am curious how they worked this out and well, it's down to the script really, hopefully there are FANS involved somehow and not just technicians. I will premiere a very special video soon before tackling another Zepp album :) Thank you for your support John, have a great week!

Outstanding performance with your editing of this fabulous compilation of retro ( back in the good ole days ) information on definitely one of, if not the greatest band in the world ( Even to date) . I absolutely enjoyed your documentary of Led Zeppelin's 5th album and the dynamite in-depth way of how you arranged the dates of their playing before the actual album was released and even the bonus track from a concert " professionally recorded" at Southampton '73 ( Of the which I would love to hear in it's entirety) and the feeling that was produced from the ingenious editing from your part, sir. Interesting to think they flew to LA for a few days before the 27th NY gig and Jimmy picking up his new top…..I absolutely love that top with the tinsel on the shoulders. Excellent. Your literary voice gets stronger, more layered, surprising, insightful, puzzling (as in assembling a tapestry of ideas and themes and histories and emotions...in every paragraph, every sentence) and fluid by the video. I think...you’re a writer first. As many artists are. I think you’re dangerously close, and confidently fearless enough to move to Zep’s darkest outpost: not the satanism...the underage passenger. It’s the final piece, one that needs to be put on record, for all time. This, JCM...will seal your legacy as the true master of this realm.

This comment means a lot Miles, thank you so much! I really enjoy writing the script, got me there, it's my favorite part of the process. As far as dangerously close to those dark outposts, since i work with the official and confirmed sources of information, we'll see how the big picture looks first. If there's a door to be explored i think the material itself will lead me there or maybe it will give me the tools to tackle other band's as well. Trust me....i've spent afternoons thinking about theories and things that seem apparent, others i just feel my gut telling me what some truths could be. I look forward to cover their entire discography and explore the live shows in depth as well as establish some what ifs that i think are relevant inside this Zeppelin fever. Hi Jose! As always, impeccable work! Makes me wonder how many hours of research and insane work this takes... and also the satisfaction you feel seeing the end result. I'm learning so much about Zeppelin, surely this rockstar life must be very tiring, I think they have more flight hours than a veteran commercial pilot. Many think that these guys' life was one continuous party, drinks, drugs, women, lots of money, forgetting the hard side, away from families, spending more time in hotels than at home. Loved your analysis of Plant's vocal issues and how the band dealt with it, very smart move. I also loved the Variations On 1972 theme at the beginning, I remember seeing you playing in some short videos, could you make a longer video, you are a great guitar player! Thanks for another lesson on Zeppelin! ❤️
@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories
@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories Год назад
That is a great line right there Marcia, "more flight hours than a veteran commercial pilot". Absolutely, they are overworked and so much movement takes a toll on the person's mental part as well. They were humans who like everybody else, was making a living and trying to balance the mayhem on the road too. Thank so much for watching these series, there will be a new series soon. Recording the theme song was a fun experience but i will tell you, i get a fraction of views for music only videos, i see the algorhythm here on RU-vid actually promotes them less, so playing guitar alone has a limited reach. I will post more guitar videos in the near future! Like always, i appreciate your good vibes and support. Led Zeppelin really conquered the 70s, no question!
