It's so nice to see young guys like you two appreciate music that I grew up with. That was Robert Plant singing throughout. It's a superstar band. Guitar, bass AND drums. are special. Plants voice is unique. At the time there was no-one like him. Many copycats followed. You must watch them live. I think I mentioned the song 'Since I've Been Loving You' live 1973 MSG. I was 15 when this album was released and it changed my listening habits and made me want to stop playing my piano and learn guitar. Drove my parents crazy lol. Memories...
Paul Lacroix, I thought Plant was the original deal until I heard The Small Faces, You Need Loving, with Steve Marriott on vocals, recorded in 1966. Look it up, I’d be interested to know your reaction.
If you really want to go down the rabbit hole Dazed and confused live at MSG. 31 minutes long jimmy page at his best AMAZING guitar work omg !!!!!! A must listen and watch from the song remains the same !!!!!!
thanks for letting them know, that was Mr. Plant singing throughout the entire song, but again good to see the younger generation getting hip to Led Zeppelin
Robert Plant is amazing. He was around 19, 20 at the time he came up with those lyrics and that voice, wow! Emotional depth, passion, story telling, range - boom!
South Bound Suarez! If you want to hear bass drum absolutely insane one of the most underrated songs off all time. Bonhams foot should be recognized in the R&R H.O.F
Bonzo's triplets on this song are insane. Heavy foot on the kick tom. His time signatures are so unusual. Drum intro has Buddy Rich feel. THE GOATS!!!!!
Their very first song. It blew everyone away. My brother-in-law talks about the time he was driving, had the radio on, and BAM!, THIS!! He was at a traffic light was so engrossed with the song he didn’t notice the light had turned green. And he had the volume up so loud he didn’t hear all the honking. Back then, you could only hear it on the radio. He said he drove to the closest place where he could pull off. Then he immediately went to the record store and bought the album. He went home and told his younger brother (my husband) to come with him to his bedroom. Then they listened to that entire first Led Zepplin album. Which is crazy great. I’ve heard similar stories. The real beginning of the rock era. This one song catapulted The Beatles off the top of the charts. Then, Zepplin never had to look back. There are so many Led Zepplin songs. I think it’s important to bring home the fact this is the world’s introduction to this band and try to put it in context of what was out there heretofore it.
The drummer is named John Bonham. He is a BEAST on the drums. If you ever get a chance to see a video of his drumming, DO IT. There is only one singer, ROBERT PLANT, he’s amazing.
So glad you're starting at the beginning with Led Zeppelin. Prepare yourselves to be constantly amazed. It's sometimes difficult to believe how young these guys were when they recorded this album in 1968 (dropped in 1969). Clearly, all four were incredibly gifted. Keep in mind that there was no auto tune back then. What you're hearing is just how they sounded. Robert Plant - vocals - had just turned 20 John Bonham - drummer - also only 20 John Paul Jones - bass/keys - 22 years old Jimmy Page - guitarist and producer - 24 years old That's all Plant singing, great range and very versatile. I'm looking forward to hearing what you think of the way he used his voice as you listen to more songs along the way. The other guys would sing back up from time to time but the only song during which they had another singer come in was for "The Battle of Evermore" on their 4th album. Female singer named Sandy Denny. Really enjoyed your reaction. Great song from Zeppelin right out of the gate. Looking forward to hearing what you think of the rest of the tracks on this album. Thanks and cheers! Edit: I was just 13 years old when Led Zeppelin hit the scene. 50+ years later, they still amaze me. And I still have all of my albums in vinyl that I bought as soon as they dropped. Ah, nothing like setting that needle down and letting them rip. ;)
@@AirplayBeats Yeah, same ages when they recorded their second album. By starting from the beginning, you'll hear their evolution as musicians and as a band through the timeline of their discography. They were very creative, versatile, experimental and progressive. Also great that you're listening to studio cuts. Page was a genius producer and what he did in the studio, especially given the equipment of the time, was absolutely incredible.
@@Foxingban i stand corrected! It is a duet with Sandy Denny. In my defense, I was speaking of the other members of LZ. Plant sings all lead, with backup from members.
"You're time is gonna come", "What is and what should never be", "Ten years gone", "Babe I'm gonna leave you"....! These Zeppelin tracks are EPIC...!!!
So many bangers!!!!!! you will appreciate each of their albums.. each is a little different. They did not duplicate themselves. "Babe, I'm gonna leave you" "ramble on" "when the levee breaks" "10 years gone" "all of my love" "fool in the rain" "NO QUARTER"
I love your reactions! Nope, only Robert Plant singing. His voice went through some damage I believe in 1973. He was even better before that time. You should check out “You Shook Me”. It’s off the same album and give a good ample of Robert’s voice. Yes, imagine, this was our introduction to LED Zeppelin. We were blown away.
That is still Robert Plant singing...I've been listening to Zeppelin since 76 and didn't pay attention to the kick drums you pointed out..Thank you for that! It's amazing what John Bonham could do. Absolutely the best drummer ever..Love that you are enjoying our era so much!!
Sounds as if you gentlemen now have Led Poisoning. I've had mine since i turned 9 in '69. Thanks to my 16-year-old brother at the time who bought all their albums as soon as they came out. ✌️
As you keep going down the "Rabbit hole" that is Led Zep, you're in for more All- time GREAT BEATS and drumming! You're also going to get musical virtuosity from all of the members of Led Zeppelin. Vocals, harmonica, bass, keyboards, mandolin and of course guitar.
You reacted to alot about Elvis, but just a piece of history for you, Elvis step brother, was listening to a Led Zeppelin record at Graceland one day, and Elvis heard it, and asked about them, because he liked their sound, and actually went to one of their concerts, and met them, and they came to one of his shows, and Elvis found out Robert Plant the singer, and the other members, was a big fan of his. Although they had different music styles, they had a mutual respect for what each other did musically. And Elvis respected their work ethic, they were churning out album after album and touring constantly.
Robert Plant sung every Zep song solo, except for Battle of Evermore. He duet with Sandy Denny, who was BRILLIANT. She sang with Fairport Convention and solo. Where Does the Time Go is absolutely beautiful. It was the last song she ever sang before she died.
I’m 52 and started getting into led zeppelin at about 14 years old. I love seeing people discover these awesome musicians for the first time. IMO they are the greatest rock band of all time.
This is the best way to go through Led Zeppelin, start at the beginning with Led Zeppelin 1 through Led Zeppelin 'In Though the Out Door'. Zeppelin is considered a Rock band, but they played many different genres throughout the the years as the grew as a band. Considering, Plant and Bonham were 19 and Page and Jones were in their early 20's when they started. Going through their album collection, you can hear the growth as they matured. Plus, if you go through the albums, you will notice how the songs are placed in a way to enjoy the whole album as it is. Not just one song, then skip to a next favorite song. There is really no bad Led Zeppelin song. And that is something that is said just by avid fans. Like they say, "Everyone is a Zeppelin fan, some just don't know it yet".
Hey guys. I gotta tell you my Led Zeppelin story. I was the lead singer in a cover band when this album came out and I prided myself on being able to copy all the singers of the day. My friend (and lead guitarist) called me and said "You GOTTA hear this new group Led Zeppelin". I went to his house and he played me "Communication Breakdown". When I heard Robert Plant sing I said holy s__t what am I gonna do now? Led Zeppelin were and are a unique band. Individually they are all great, but together, oh my god! Keep on reacting to all this great music. Peace.
First song on the first Led Zeppelin album. For many, it would have been the very first LZ song they had ever heard. Quite the introduction. And to top it off, these guys were all in their early 20's when they did this.
There's footage of Robert Plant watching "Yoyoka" the 8 year old drummer (now 14) playing this with all the double bass on a single pedal included. He said, for her easy it was like "falling off a log." Imagine being that good at 8. Now at fourteen she's considered one of the 500 best drummers in the world today.
Awesome reaction gents, and a really great idea starting from the beginning. Led Zeppelin had everything to prove with this album. Also there’s only one lead singer! Every lead vocal you heard in this song was Robert Plant. John Bonham, the drummer, does back up vocals sometimes but the lead singer is always Robert. The only exception is one song on the fourth album which was the only time Led Zeppelin ever featured a second singer :) awesome job guys!
Robert Plant all the way through. "Babe, I'm Gonna Leave You" follows on the album. Classic! The only other singer to ever appear on a Led Zeppelin album was Sandy Denny. Her voice is wonderful. The band gave her a rune on the liner notes to their fourth album for her part on the song "The Battle of Evermore". Her work with Fairport Convention is also quite masterful. For a taste, check out "Who Knows Where the Time Goes?", "Farewell, Farewell", "The Ballad Of Easy Rider", and "She Moves Through The Fair" among others.
Led Zeppelin's early stuff from the first two albums in 1969, are their best in my opinion. They were hungry, and raw, and gritty. At their heart, Led Zeppelin is a Blues Band. Much of their stuff was taken either directly, or indirectly from the old original, American negro Blues masters of the 1920s and 30s. Same for many artists and Bands like The Rolling Stones, Eric Burden and The Animals, Van Morrison, and many more. The Bands from the mid 1960s on, were all influenced by the likes of Lead Belly, Blind Mellon Jefferson, Muddy Waters etc. Thanks guys
Robert is the only vocalist, his range was unbelievable back then. They only had a guest vocalist once on one song - The Battle of Evermore on Zep 4, her name was Sandy Dennis. JPJ always took you to church with his organ playing and his bass playing was par none. He also plays mandolin, too!
Robert Plant. He's the same singer for almost all their vocals. He can go high or low and everything in between. Zeppelin has a lot of influence in hip hop. Lol and you're only one song in. Enjoy the Zepathon! It's one helluva ride. PS Up your camera game por favor.
The kick drum is a SINGLE kick... Yeah. For real. Bonham had the fastest, funkiest single kick. Another dude to check out is Clive Burr from Iron Maiden. He played on the first three Maiden albums and was awesome live. I had the good fortune to have seen him live twice.
Excellent review guys. Robert Plant sang lead vocals on every song in their catalog but one in which he shared the mic. with Sandy Denny of the group Fairport Convention. It was on a song called "The Battle of Evermore". Her voice was a perfect match with Plant for that particular song, which is very acoustic featuring Page playing mandolin. Never the less a very vocally powerful song. The origin of Led Zep began with Jimmy Page leaving the Yardbirds, and with one of the Yadbirds co-producers Peter Grant, decided to start a new band with Grant as the Manager. Grant and Page knew the Bass player would be JPJ as they were aware of his ability through Page and JPJ playing together as studio session musicians on other recording artists LP's. I don't recall if Bonham came next or if it was Plant but Grant and Page scoured the UK watching various drummers performing in the clubs. Once they heard Bonham they knew they had their man. Page loved his power and knew it would be a perfect fit with the musical direction he wanted to pursue. As a side note Bonham had been kicked out of numerous previous bands because he was too loud and raucous. What? Apparently those bands didn't want a beast in their midst. Keep em coming. Thanks!
Try When the Levee Breaks ….it is easily one of the most sampled tracks by hip-hop artists…. also Robert Plant is the only singer for Led Zeppelin he just has an incredible range
one of my most appreciated aspects of this dynamic band, Led Zeppelin , is the lyrics of their songs. plz have the WORDS of their masterpieces flash on the screen in future LZ reactions 🙏. [ rec The Immigrant Song and The Wonton Song ]
The drummer, John Bohnam, was 20 years old at the time of this recording - 20 years old! And the singer was the same guy throughout the song - Robert Plant.
Best first album of any band in my opinion, also two albums in the first year made in 1969 and both still stand the test of time. all true what has been said about robert Plant , jimmy Page and John Bonham but you are missing out on the bass player John Paul Jones, it is the combination of the four of them that creates the magic. JPJ also plays key boards including organ and mandolin on other tracks and is fundamental to the band. Try watching Danmark TV recording of how many more times at some stage - watching them play is one of the great pleasures in life.
I saw Led Zeppelin🔥in 1970, my senior year in high school.🤗 It was my first concert and my first acid trip!🤯🤪 What a great time to be young and wild!💯😂 ❤️✌️
You’re a good listener to pickup on that kick drum so early on in the song because it gets past most reaction listeners. It’s the crown jewel of this song.
1973 Madison Square Garden… “ Since I’ve Been Loving You”….. essential…. Live footage is from their movie called The Song Remains the Same…. As close to a religious experience as rock music can muster….. GOATS…… it becomes more apparent album after album… they were the very definition diversity…. Blues , Rock, Folk, Country ,Jazz, and even reggae believe it or not… if you stick with it you’ll hear all of this and more… in terms of the rock genre Zeppelin’s a course unto themselves….
1:14 I am so freaking glad that you stopped it to point out the drums there because what he's doing on the kick drum there especially with that era of technology? I mean you might have heard that a little bit in jazz but it just took the World by storm. It's just amazing. Absolutely amazing. And this is not the only song he did it on, he did this a whole bunch or variations on it of all sorts.
Song one of led Zeppelin 1 is the introduction to John Bonham.. Previous comments say that plant saying this song independently however John Bonham was a backing vocal.. This is a fact.. In fact led zeppelin never did this song in a live show until many years later. The trumpets obviously are called triplets in quadruples. What triple is a set of notes played in one music bar?. On top of the trip blitz he is playing a double. Hi hat shuffle and the snare is running at 4 4 time with the guitar. Most of the time drummer John Bonham got in with the guitar rather than the base. This enabled John Paul Jones. To add in his own baselines. To add a extra rhythm to all of their songs. The secret to led Zeppelin is they play in dependently to their songs but yet they Stay synchronized.
Now l'm subscribing to your channel just because you're listening to my favorite band of all times, saw them sooo many times in concert that I lost count but please continue with Zeppelin and I will be here because l'm the biggest "Led Head" around 🤟🥰
On Led Zeppelin 4, which featured Stairway, was "The Battle of Evermore", which was written by Page on the mandolin, borrowed from Jones. Plant added lyrics inspired by a book he was reading about the Scottish Independence Wars. The track features a duet between Plant and Fairport Convention's Sandy Denny, who provides the only female voice to be heard on a Led Zeppelin recording. Plant was the only singer apart from her, ever.
Ahhh ya caught the double time kick drum bit at the beginning.. excellent catch.. Look what that guy could do right outta the bag. Same singer, lower register.
Y'all would enjoy the band Little Feat. The live album Waiting for Columbus is a classic from start to finish. Their music is a perfect mix of blues, country, jazz, and rock with some gumbo and crawfish etouffee thrown in for seasoning .
Whats crazy is this album is 50+ yrs old and we're still trying to pick our jaws up off our chests! Is that a single bass drum? YES! Is that one dude singing? YES! Can a bass player player play a perfect bassline? Ask JPJ! Don't even look at that guitar player! Jimmy will finish his whiskey, and fuck you up! Lol! Page used his Yardbirds money to finance the first Zep album. He had total creative control in its production. It is so raw you can hear every squeak of Bonzo's hi hat pedal! There is a live concert of theirs from '68 or '69 before they had any money. They were wearing jeans and sneakers, and they sounded THIS good live. Its worth looking for.
loving the appreciation of bonham , so many peoples goat hey ..theyre all on such a level .. looking forward to 'when the levee breaks" when u get there btw
I was 19 when this came out. A friend invited me over to smoke some pot and, after we were fairly lit up (pot wasn't nearly as strong back then as it is today), he put this album on, saying, "I think this is going to really blow your mind." It did. It was like having something explode right in front of me.
The astonishing thing was Bonham did that with a single pedal. The pedals back then were pretty good, but still it was something nobody else was doing, fast triplets on the bass drum.
