Gretchen, I want to commend you on your videos and teaching style. I have been playing guitar for 35 years, been to music school, teaching professionally for 28, performing with bands, all the good stuff. EVERY time I see one of your videos I learn something new. I love how clear and concise you are with your lessons. Even with really advanced topics you make it easily understandable for your viewers. Your passion for playing and music easily comes through. Last summer I took my guitar on a vacation in the Appalachians and learned this song through your walkthrough on the Breedlove channel. Even at half-speed it was just a joy to play and melted stress away. I haven't played it in a while - the odd tuning adds friction - but I'm in need of that same headspace right now. I just retuned, started picking away at the first few sections, and the feeling's back. Thanks so much.

Gretchen, I think you should be in the #1 spot. AI doesn't know what it's talking about. I have always loved this song. When I would listen to my record I was sure the song would be complicated. Your lesson makes me think it's at least worth trying. When I hear you play this song I see young people in the back of a pickup truck; happy, laughing, with a "free" sense about them as they start their adventure of a lifetime!! What a beautiful image! That's a mark of great music... it can be transporting. Do give this a try! It's really not that complicated if you invest in some of the basics and go in mini sections. If you're newer to fingerpicking, the first video on Fingerpicking Fundamentals (also on my channel) goes over some helpful basics. Love to hear your version, if you do one, and let me know how it goes for you! It may mean some patience, depending on how much of this you've done, but I swear it is worth the effort!

Most tutorials just teach the chords, and sometimes you get tablature ànd maybe even a rhytham pattern. But, your tutorials go beyond that. You dont just teach how to play the song. You teach us how to perform the song as well. .

Enjoyed your approach to teaching this. I learned it back in the '90s from a Physical Graffiti TAB book, which was pretty close to your own transcription here, if memory serves. Once I finally got it up to speed and flowing, it was so fun to play. Still one of my favorite fingerstyle pieces by anyone. That Breedlove is gorgeous. Thanks for posting this.

Thank you! This is a fun one to play! I think most transcriptions would be pretty similar to this. The big things tend to be points of consensus. Yet it's easy to hear finer details differently. I say consult as many sources as possible, and see what your ears tell you sounds best!

I learned to play this by ear when I was a teen and of course I learned in standard tunning and the wrong way. Just playing with a C chord. But it's such a beautiful song!!! Thanks for the lesson!

I learnt most of Bron-Y-Aur Stomp (for some reason, a different spelling) a few years ago and need to revisit that tune. I love both. I shall have a crack at this one as well. I didn't realise (recent sub) you were in Zepparella. I'm a bit of a Zep nut and you ladies are one of the few bands that nailed their sound, i.m.o.. Thanks for the lesson.

That was awesome, thanks! One simple question, what strings do you use on your Breedlove? It sounds great. Currently have D'Addario XS strings on my Pursuit Exotic CE Concert, and I'm not super happy with the sound when doing fingerstyle (no fingernails). With pick is sounds really good actually, it has come alive in the months that I have owned it. Thanks Gretchen!

Thanks for checking it out! Hope it might be helpful. Regarding strings, the strings on this one in the video were whatever Breedlove had on it when it arrived, so I'm not sure! If you like the sound of yours with a pick, am I guessing right that the strings sound too dark or dull with fingers? Or what exactly is bugging you? I have also noticed that instruments mature, and the sound can really develop over time. Some of this is the instrument, I believe, and some is my getting acquainted better with it.

@@gretchenmenn you dead on guessed right, dull/dark sounding. I think these guitars came with D'Addario XT strings, which I have never been happy with those on any of my guitars. Yeah, maybe I just need to become way more acquainted like you said with mine before I really love it. Need to work through my "bluegrass" flatpicking phase right now and get back to really digging in to fingerstyle. Crazy you brought up the "maturing" of the instrument, because this Breedlove is the ONLY guitar I have and played that did just that. It has opened up so much since the day I got it and with a pick is freaking loud, like louder than my Epiphone Masterbilt dread that is one of my favorites. Thanks!!!

Hey, I love your playing and your videos! I found you while looking for a Wonton Song backing track a few months ago, and the 1st one I watched was your version of Man In The Box. Very awesome ;~) I'm a big AIC fan, but an even bigger Zeppelin fan...Zepparella Rocks Hard! Do you ever play anywhere near the East Coast? I "learned" your version of Going To California, thanks. I learned a lot just from watching you. I loved your Bach cello piece too.. So that, and this, ha, I have my work cut out for me...That's a really beautiful guitar. I love Koa. I have 2 Carvin all Koa, neck-through Teles... 2 questions: Is that neck width wider, like a classical? And what gauge strings are those? I've tuned down to D, and C#, and used a Slinky set 12-54 on electric, and always tune down a step on acoustic, same gauge....

Thank you so much! Really appreciate you being here. The neck on this feels like a typical steel string... definitely not as wide as a classical. And I'm not sure what gauges Breedlove had on this one when they sent it to me. But, yeah, tuning all the way down to C can get buzzy. I'd say give it a go on whatever strings are comfortable for you, and see if you can adjust your right hand touch with the thumb so it's gentle enough not to create buzz, but intentional enough to bring out the bass notes. Make sense? Love to hear how you do with it!

@@gretchenmenn Hey Gretchen, thanks for your reply, I appreciate it. Cool, all good. For some reason I thought that neck might be a little wider...I'll have to dig deeper into your lessons, because my finger-picking (homegrown, not classically trained) consists mainly of index, & thumb, but I've been trying to incorporate the middle also...I tend to be a little heavy on my attack to the point where my fingers get stuck, or over pluck, so your advice of a gentler attack is very helpful. On electric, I do like to snap the strings a bit, and get a real springy sound on a floating trem, but I digress ;~)...Your tone, touch, and approach is really inspiring me to study more, and keep getting better! Thanks for the tips!

I have it on my Patreon page as PDF, and accuracy on stuff like this is tricky. I am always changing my mind about things as my ears continue to develop, so my transcription reflects what sounds right to me when I did it, but it may not be more accurate than whatever else you've found. But comparing various sources with what your ears tell you will get you pretty far!

I 'learnt' Bron y aur 40 ago using the Led Zeppelin complete song book... but the songs were all in standard tuning and didn't really sound like the real thing but got you an idea of the song..

@@gretchenmenn yeah. I guess if you're job is making music and doing it weird, that's what they do/did. But yeah, I read alot about them. It's factual. That's why you hear that strange audio character in the recording. It's the song played in reverse by jimmy, then flipped over and played forward over a normal forward played version.

Yeah, I have his pronunciation on there! Doesn't feel like it should be such an issue, but I noticed myself dodging saying the name when I was filming, imagining a comments section mostly arguing song title pronunciation. So I figured I'd address it.
