50+ years reloading, Rule #1: never reload from memory, data from inter net, and always have a reloading manual on the table with you (open to the load data). Check it, check it, check it again.
Thanks for the how to video on the Lee hand press. I e been loading my own now for over two years using the Lee loading kit and hammering every step of the way and I am going to get the hand press and give it a try. Thank you.
Most detailed but simple vid I’ve found so far, I just bought a Ruger made SBL can’t wait to get it and can’t wait to buy this simple set up to reload as we are paying $100 for a box of 20 here in Aussie land, I don’t think ill care to much yet about shmick loads that are accurate as hell, as long as they go bang and smack what I’m aiming at I’m happy. Cheers Man✌🏻
I'm going to do the exact same thing (I bought an SBL too and LOVE it), already have a large dedicated TT molle pouch ready to go for the press and all its accessories. Shame that Trailboss is unobtainium, no measurement needed - fill to the brim and compact the round in. 405gr round barely broke 950fps and very forgiving to shoot.
Should have mentioned to be very careful with the case lube. A little too much with some excess on fingers getting transferred to primers can ruin the primer. Result, dead round, will not fire.
The Lee loaders are really nice, and yes if doing just an individual case, it is faster. But if you had to do 5-10, or 50. This hand press with the breech lock bushings are the way to go. Size all your casings, expand all your casings, prime all of them, etc. much more productive at multiple casings, when done all at once in stages.
You can actually make pretty good time with this setup if you do multiple of each stage at a time. For instance, once you have the hang of it you can resize/decap 30 cases in about 5 minutes. No real problem to do 30 to 50 in a half hour or so. Where this hand press really stands out is since it portable, at the range with you. Fine tuning loads for best accuracy. Without leaving the range, reload 5 more rounds with a slight adjustment and test them on the spot.
i use the lowest load from the trap door data. ether varget or imr 3031. i dont want say the scoop. but if you have the book it will say. i dont use modern/marlin loads, only trap door loads and those drop everything iv ever hit no problems, most time though and though. i use hard cast 405 grain 335 hard cast hollow point, some special 500 and 600 grain ones also. mostly 405 hard cast, since i have the mold and endless lead from a tire shop. i rarely shoot over 200 yrds most time its 100 yrds or less. bit of a rainbow at 200 but at 100 i hold maybe a inch high and it smacks were i want then.
@alanvail4692 4064 is good also. iv used it when i couldnt get varget or imr 3036. i found the 4046 pressures were pushing a bit high for what i enjoy. becomes more of a kick then a push. personal preference is all there.
im up to 34 on some cases ( 45-70 ) no signs of failure on cases. and 8 on my 30-30 also using a classic reloader. i average 10 on the 30-30 but thats a bottle neck and 45-70 is straight wall.
If your explaining about reloading to someone who has little experiance in this, you should mention the grain weight of the powder and type you are throwing. It does no good for someone to attempt this without those crfitical pieces of information. Are you using black powder 2F? or smokeless? This info needs to be imparted on your audiance.
I try not to mention the powder type ( 3031 4640 etc ) or weight because I don't want to get flaged ( yes you can get in trouble ) I have said to ppl when asked were I got the load info, lee loading book, and at low end of loading data. I honestly wish I could, also useing some one else's load can be dangerous if I was loading hot. My rifle could take it, but could theres ? I made a video to demonstrate how to use something, not load development. I'm sure some ppl.do, but I don't want to be responsible for damaging a person or a firearm. although I do agree, in future I'll mention if I used black power or smokeless. thank you for your input, I'll try and incorporate some of it in future, some I can't hope you understand. have a blessed day.
Please let me know what im doing wrong. Because iv made well over 1000 rounds like this and have had zero problems other than a bad primer. Almost all with 405 grain hard cast and with imr 4064 or 3031 and magnum primer because i find it burns the powder better. Have had zero case problems. Zero bullet push back in tube feed rifles. definitely no problems in single shots. No pressure signs, no blown out primer pockets. But im always open to feedback to improve my reloading. please be detailed so others can also learn. Also, iv never seen a difference between this reloader and a tabletop reloader. Much love and look forward to your input.
