RIP Gordon McQueen - 26/06/1952 - 15/06/2023
Gordon McQueen born in Kilbirnie, Scotland, on 26th June 1952 was signed by St Mirren as an 18-year-old in 1970, before joining the Whites in 1972 as understudy to United's aging stalwart Center Half Jack Charlton,where he would eventually go on to make 172 appearances.
Gordon made his 1st team league debut in the 3-2 away win at Derby County in March 1973 and In his first season at Elland Road he helped Leeds reach, and played in the 1973 European Cup Winners’ Cup final against AC Milan.
During the 1973/74 campaign, McQueen formed a key partnership in the heart of the Leeds defence with Norman Hunter and the Whites went on a 29-game unbeaten run in the First Division at the start of the campaign. He made a total of 36 league appearances as Don Revie’s side were crowned champions of England for the second time in the club’s history.
At the end of the season, he won the first of his 30 caps for Scotland, making his international debut against Belgium.
During the 1974/75 campaign, McQueen played a crucial role in helping Leeds reach the 1975 European Cup final, scoring three goals on route, but was unavailable for the final in Paris against Bayern Munich, after being sent-off against FC Barcelona in the semi-final second-leg at the Nou Camp.
He was twice named the club’s Player of the Season in 1974/75 and 1977/78, along with twice being selected in the PFA Team of the Year in 1974/75 and 1977/78.
In 1978, he went on to join rivals Manchester United for what at the time was a british transfer record of £495,000

Absolutely fantastic. Gordon stepped into big Jack Charltons boots in 1974 helped Leeds to the league title and fit in like he'd been doing it forever. He was only 22 I believe. RIP Gordon you were a Leeds legend who had to move on to further your career but you'll never be forgotten by people of our generation ❤😢

I'm a Liverpool supporter and remember him playing when I was a lad, he was a tall strong good player. Sorry to hear he passed away today at such a young age. RIP Gordon.

Filled the big mans boots with a style of his own, a solid no nonsense player in a team of the era, sad to here he has sadly passed away, condolences to his family friends and team mates from a Liverpool fan, thanks for the entertainment over the years when football was a contact sport played by MEN.

An inspiration to me as a kid playing on the fields of Aberford Road Junior School Garforth . I'd head heavy white Captains balls left right and centre, Those bloody things were brutal too. Remember the influence of those iconic Scots turning us all into Scotland supporters. Long live the memory of Big Gordon and his galloping runs!!!

I remember him passing us on the M6 While listening to the radio, we surmised he was injured..Nope, he not only played but scored a header v Arsenal in 3-0 victory. Rest in Peace big Fella.

If McQueen was playing in Leeds European Cup final against Bayern, 1975,, Leeds surely won the Cup, because Bayern weakness was in set pieces. McQueen was good in the air. Like Jack Charlton, McQueen scored many goals .
