We've all experienced someone driving slow in the left lane. "Why won't they just move over?!" you think to yourself. Turns out some states are changing laws to address this common nuisance. Next, we give our first impressions on the Buick Regal TourX, and why car enthusiasts seem to love station wagons. We end this week on audience questions about the Lexus ES, and how CR awards its Recommended status to vehicles.

People like crossovers because of the increased seating height. They'll tell you it's because of AWD, cargo space, etc., but the #1 reason is because people like to see more ahead of them on the road.

FINALLY!!! The silence has been broken! It is about time that the silent majority speak out against left lane cruisers. Thank you! This is a VERY big problem in California and it causes big safety issues on the road. I frequently hear "the speed limit is the same in every lane" but it's not that persons job to police other motorists. If you are a left lane cruiser PLEASE move over, it's the right thing to do. Thank you.

SO MANY people seem absolutely CLUELESS when it comes to etiquette of using the left/passing lane. they really need to emphasize this in class and during tests because way too many people don't seem to know. and like ryan said, a lot of time they're in their own little world on their phone. it's infuriating.

My ears perked up when you talked about the Lexus ES. My 1992 was bought brand-new and I drove it past 300,000 miles. The 1997 one I purchased was used with 105000 miles on it and it ran reliably up to 290000 miles until my sister crashed it. I would love another es but I cannot stand that big mouth bass front grill that has become prevalent on it and the Toyotas in the last 4 or 5 years and the upcoming model looks even worse. But their reputation stands on its own.
@rightlanehog3151
@rightlanehog3151 6 лет назад
At least you don't have to look at the grill when you are inside the car. Ugliness and beauty are subjective but reliability is a very solid, objective reason to purchase a specific car.

Definitely need to enforce the general rule about left lanes being for passing only. For safety reasons alone. Angry drivers are unsafe drivers. I'm generally a slower driver. But I also hang out in the far right lane. And when I pass I actually pass and move back. As it should be. Or course longer drives I like to go the speed or 5 over to shorten my long tiring trip.

I think you guys are missing the boat on electric cars. I’m not green and I’m not an early adopter, but I am a new model 3 owner (1 week) and I am impressed. I love the idea of never stopping at a gas station or an oil change shop and never worrying about other maintenance issues. As fuel prices rise, it’s great to have a refueling cost at a small percentage of an ICE. And the instant torque is totally addictive. My range anxiety is ebbing quickly with all of the tesla super chargers out there. When oil returns to greater than $100 per barrel & someone creates an ev that can compete with a Honda Accord in cost, that market will explode.

Police should do more to keep left lane hoggers out of the passing lane. It creates so much road rage from people, including me.
@incgohd
@incgohd 6 лет назад
Making the why of left lane hoggers and what to do overly complicated. In Europe one of the traffic rules states, the exact place of the traffic participant is at the most right lane of the road (if it's got more lanes in the same direction like a highway). Second you shall always overtake another vehicle on the left side (couple of exceptions like at a crossroad or exit lane). Ignoring each of the two rules and possible danger is substantial is the tendency. Fines up to 360 euro. This is much easier to understand were left lane hogging comes from and why authorities have to deal with it.

I've been driving back and forth between Orlando and Jacksonville for the past year for school and even though there's a law about left-lane sitting, I've never seen a cop care. On multiple occasions, I've seen local cops or state troopers get on 95, swerve straight over to the left lane and park it. One time I watched a state trooper tailgate this car going the speed limit in the left lane, holding up traffic for about 10 miles -- the car had multiple opportunities to move over and didn't and all the trooper did was ride their bumper. They're more interested in collecting speeding fines than enforcing rules that actually make a difference.

A couple years ago while I was traveling down the highway in the left lane behind a handful of cars we all of a sudden came to a sudden slowdown. At first I couldn't tell what the holdup was then I noticed everyone jumping into the right lane to go around a slow moving vehicle in the left lane. It finally got to be my turn and I was intrigued to see if it was an older driver oblivious to the world around them. No, it was a younger gentleman in a Tesla Model S driving with autopilot in the left lane, staring at his phone, oblivious to the world around him. I fear more self-driving cars on the road is only going to make this worse. I bet Tesla sill hasn't thought yet to program their autopilot software to recognize multiple cars passing on the right!

Hey CR, when you purchase a car, you pay an amount of sales tax based on the selling price of the car. This can amount to thousands of dollars that you never get back, even if you end up selling the car a few years later. In most states, California included, you pay sales tax only on the cost of the lease. These tax savings more than make up for the acquisition fee required on a lease. What are your thoughts? Still think you will save money in the long run to purchase or lease?

I am a Prius prime owner that has 39000 miles on my car through my 18 months ownership. I would like to add some comment on that question of how often should you going for a service. I think that user's question which he did not clear it out is that regular Prius hybrid have a schedule maintenance of every 5000 miles and why is that the plug in version have same schedule which doesn't make sense. I think from Toyota's point of view, they can not know how much you are plunging in wether you use one tank every 3000 miles, or just driving like a regular hybrid, so toyota's schedule is always on the very least possible drive habit so it doesn't damage their engine. But here is the but, I am drive for more than 18000 miles over last 9 months without oil change becasue that's my car, I trust myself on how much EV only I am drive and how much engine I am running. If Toyota is recommending oil change every 10000 miles (5000 is just service, but oil is 10000), I feel I can at least drive 20000 miles without oil change, of course you still have to change oil every 12 months as consumer report said. By the way, Toyota prime's engine do not come on when you on default mode even when you floor it, it is a pure EV when there is juice in the battery.

We all know the dangers and frustrations of left lane drivers. It all comes down to people that are selfish. The same people that drive in the left lane also double park, tailgate, cut you off, delay starting off on a green light as well as non driving situations such as, not putting the grocery cart in the proper place, leaving diapers where they changed the child etc... The left lane is convenient for the these people. In the right lane, you have to be more attentive of large trucks and other people entering the freeway, and these people believe that being inconvenienced is beneath them.

I think if you're watching this show, you probably know to pass on the left. A PSA should be put on TV every 5 mins to to general public.

I completely disagree with that "1 year time limit on oil" thing. I had my oil analyzed after 1 year (5,625 miles), and oil was in fantastic condition, with TBN of 6.7. I do not believe quality synthetic oil degrades so fast as to call for yearly oil change. There was even a guy who showed a fine UOA (Used Oil Analysis) results for his Miata (weekend car) using 3-year oil change interval on bobistheoilguy site. Of course, the standard disclaimer of "your mileage may vary" applies, so if you want to be sure, send 'em out for UOA.

We are on the 2 year oil change program with our Volt. Many Volt owners also follow this schedule, assuming low engine usage. I'm not sure where the 1 year idea came from, maybe synthetic blend over full synthetic? IDK.

Turbocharged engines need a 12 month oil change interval. Even Amsoil extended service oil is recommended for 12 month change.

Why are there “cages” around the mics?
@catsspat
@catsspat 6 лет назад
That's the "rubberband" mount to eliminate vibrations.
@RobertLeBlancPhoto
@RobertLeBlancPhoto 6 лет назад
Those are suspension cords. The mics are suspended, so there's as little physical hard contact on them, which would translate to sound aberrations from things like hands tapping on the side of the mic or things thumping on the table.

the problem with this narrative on left lane hogs is that the types of people that do it, will never watch anything like this.

I'd buy a EV car IF it had a gas operating system in which it keeps the main propulsion system operating for as long as needed. Otherwise it's still a city/urban dwelling car. I live in a area with longer distances between cites and not that many charging infrastructures along the way so..

They sounds so stupid when they are talking about electric cars. If you have 250 miles of range how are you concerned about not having enough electricity day to day? They he claim oh I will never remember to plug it up.....yes you will. They sound completely brainless. Also I bet most of them have a second car.....use it for the long trips or a super charger. It will not take hours and hours as he said to charge it up.

Many drivers screaming about "left lane hogs" are in fact reckless drivers going 20-30-40-50 miles an hour over the speed limit. People frequently get stuck in the left lane. If they can't safely move over due to congestion, it causes speeders to dangerously swerve into the right lane in their desperate attempt to reach the next red light. Furthermore, it is always necessary to travel in the left lane for some distance when contemplating a left turn. In many places the roads are congested to the degree of needing all available lanes for normal traffic. If people would simply observe posted speed laws, most of the complaints regarding "left lane hogs" would be resolved. Some American drivers need to exercise a little more patience and stop acting like spoiled three year olds. I have had a drivers license for 57 yrs. driven at least a million miles, and have never before seen such a collection of piss-poor drivers on the roads of the United States as there are today.

As soon as people start buying electric cars massively, watch what happens to the price of electricity. Since that will hit old and poor people the most, we will have wide-spread protests, and different price tiers will be introduced. In the end the owners of EVs will wonder how they got into this mess.

Self admitting Left Lane Hog here. In California our right lanes are falling appart from trucks, it is a bumpy ride. On I-5 people can pass me on the right if they need. But 100% agree on 3 lane roads. Just 2 lane HWY where the right lane is a bumpy mess, nope going to hog away.

If the speedlimit says 100km/h you should drive 100km/h either on the right lane or left lane. To tell people not to hold traffic is basically asking everyone to drive 140km/h + just to be in the left lane and then no one can merge into each other because everyone is driving too fast.

What exactly is left lane hogging?? If I am on the highway and driving 10 miles above the speed limit can I stay on the left lane?!? Or should I move over to let the person behind me who wants to go 20 miles above the speed limit pass??

@brent1041
@brent1041 6 лет назад
You should be moving over and let the faster car pass. Most states actually have laws saying its illegal to just stay in the left lane. Your supposed drive in the right lane normally and only use the left lane to pass.
@yanDeriction
@yanDeriction 6 лет назад
the left lane is for driving at any speed up to the speed limit as long as you are passing a car (at a reasonable rate). It would be nice to sit in the left lane and generally not have to deal with traffic entering the highway but that's not how traffic laws/etiquette works.

Exactly. The people they are talking about are the ones who say, If I'm going 55, then no one should be passing me. Even LEOs say, "Keep right except to pass. You aren't authorized to enforce the speed limit."
