Yes!! That is one good looking wagon! Way to go GM! Let's hope more than nine people will buy this and GM won't immediately discontinue it. The U.S. needs more wagons for people who want the utility but don't need the height/ground clearance. There are so many choices in Europe, and most of them are available with a manual/diesel combination. Great job on the review, Nathan! PS: The catapult hood is a late April Fools joke, right? :D

Hey Nathan, Great review, and I share your love for wagons. BTW, the "exploding hood" feature allows the TourX to meet government safety regulations and keep the belt line low and stylish. Otherwise, Buick would have to raise the hood by about 2 inches, which makes the front look bloated and shrinks the greenhouse space. Way cool engineering workaround.

Agree on the looks, this is vastly better looking than most crossovers. I think only Mazda and Porsche are excepted. The pedestrian hood is a European thing. Remember, this Buick started life as an Opel. Europe has stringent pedestrian safety standards, which, for example, is why they can’t have the new Corvette ZR1... all the front aero bits would annihilate a pedestrian unfortunate enough to be hit by one. Not mandatory stuff here yet, but please don’t give Congress any ideas. There are far more useful and pressing issues they need to attend to. Anyway... good review. I am curious to test drive one. I wish it was a 6-cyl instead of the boosted four. Wifey has an Outback 3.6. I love the motor, hate the handling, hate the “image”. This Buick would eliminate the tree-hugging-lefty stereotype that Subarus have in the PacNW, handle dramatically better, and get better mileage. The question is whether I’d be okay with the 4-pot. I really like the smoothness of the 6, and it kinda tries to scream like a Porsche when you whack it open to pass on a 2-lane road (we live in the sticks, so that’s an everyday occurrence). Drove a Volvo with a boosted four, and the motor was unacceptably groany and grumbly for a “luxury-ish” car, utterly inappropriate and uninspiring. Glad to see more wagon options!

No, Nathan. It's not an adventure vehicle. It's not a crossover, it's not a "utilitarian vehicle". It's an all-wheel-drive wagon so you can drive it... On the Road... year round no matter the weather. It's not an off road vehicle. It doesn't need more ground clearance.. IT'S A WAGON. Stop contributing to the uglyfication of cars. It's just fine. Come to the Pacific Northwest and see where we take our wagons. Of course they’re overwhelmingly Subaru Outback. This car could have done what VW couldn’t do: beat the Outback. It’s got more power from a more modern engine, a bit more cargo space and the right price. But that low clearance kills its potential. Even in slightly deeper snow you’ll be stuck with this car. Off road is limited to the gravel you’ll drive for 200 yards to where the trail parking lot is.
@joshua.harazin
@joshua.harazin 6 лет назад
George T. And that's fine. This car is not for those people. This car is for people who are willing to trade ground clearance for better driving dynamics. Not everything needs to be off-road capable. Side note, my front wheel drive car with 5.5 in of ground clearance has never once got stuck in the snow. I live in rural Wisconsin.

I've always been a sucker for a wagon. Had a 62 Falcon wagon project car 20 odd years ago ... had an 87 Crown Vic wagon about a decade ago that I STILL miss. Really enjoyed the Dodge Magnum we had as a work vehicle a few years back too. My brother had a 78 Colony Park wagon for a long time too. (Yes, with the 'fuel sipping' 460.) Wagons beat SUVs every day of the week. I hope the SUV trend dies off a bit and the wagons make a comeback. Right now you really don't have many options outside of the upscale/premium cars if you want one.

Definitely the most level-headed reviews out there. I would say though that you either miss the point or pretend to miss the point that 99 percent of people who buy _____ Utility Vehicles of any variety (or sport wagons) will never even once take them off road. Now, even living in suburban Detroit, I have to admit that I have only seen ONE of these actually being driven, and it had a manufacturer plate on it!! So I have no clue how their marketing is even working, if there even is any. But I do think it's the 'right car, right time, right price' etc if only they can get it into the heads (and hands) of the right driving audience.

The 1990 Pontiac 6000 AWD S/E had a 3.1 litre V6 and was available as a 3200 lb. station wagon. The similar Buick Century & Olds Cutlass Ciera wagons (just under 3000 lbs because only FWD) carried on till 1996. Well, it came in, and after about six months I told him that he did not have my permission to sell it to anyone but me after he was done with it. :) He sold (read "gave") it to me early. I loved that car...slept in the back countless times, went camping with it, mountain biking, hiking, etc. It held all my crap and was a mobile changing room, too. Joshua Harazin tire technology has come a long way, as have drivetrain technology. Turbo tuning and traction control makes the most of the power it has at lower speeds whereas the LS4 had less grippy tires and a torquey power curve that fought the traction control system rather than made the best of the grip it had But what i want is an LT that is the spiritual successor to the LS4, with the Tour-X's AWD, so it doesn't just spin the fronts

Very reminiscent of the Dodge Magnum. That was a station wagon that was ahead of it's time.

Nathan this was a Super review. I agree with all the points you made. I love the looks, but my only problem is that the safety items such as the lane warning, auto stop, rear back up warning and braking cost a lot more money and in such a nice car this should be standard. Honda and Toyota have it standard, now Subaru for the 19 Forester and Ascent their "EyeSight" is standard and I'm sure that the 19 Outback will have it standard also. Nathan, I want you to make a review like this one on the new Subaru Ascent. I have seen many other channels doing it in Oregon how come TFL does not have one. I really want an Ascent to replace my great 09 Forester. I would consider this Buick, but my wife does not want a wagon but she likes the Outback go figure.

If you need all those safety items on your vehicle to make you a safe driver. You shouldn’t be driving at all.

I really like this car but I haven’t been able to find any tow rating. Anybody know what this can tow? Station wagons of old pulled campers and boats with ease!

Great review, keep it up, but why do automobile reviewers obsess with the exhaust pipes? It is a wagon, most wagon owners are going to care less about it. (Actually for a lot of regular car buyers, same story, what I want from a car is fast and smooth acceleration without a lot of noise (better to hear the sound system than the engine laboring)).

Exact same fake exhausts as the Audi SUV and the new Hyundai Santa Fe. Not a single mention in those reviews. Buick takes a bashing by reviewers.

Fun fact, GM designs the cargo space in most of its cars to hold a set of golf clubs. Even my Fiero back in the day could haul golf clubs.

Actually thinking about buying this in the used market. So basically this buick wagon is cosplaying as a true offroad vehicle yet still somewhat utilitarian...and thats ok. Good info 👍

I think that one of the most important things about station wagons is their cargo space. It's a utilitarian vehicle which many families would like to have, and enough cargo space is necessary. I personally liked this one, though I consider it's too low--if we put many things inside and reach the maximum passengers capacity, it will hit the ground.

Tempted on this thing, especially as it seems a great deal could be had. Any idea if the sales will hold up enough to warrant GM to continue producing it? I'm worried if I buy it, it won't exist in two years...

Nice review! I'm looking to replace my 2015 XC70 T6 but don't like the new Volvo wagons. Options are the Jag at $72K or BMW 6 series GT (its wagon-ish) at $71K or drop down to the lower priced wagons of the Outback and now this vehicle. The Golf wagons are too small for my needs with two large dogs and luggage. I need to test drive this vehicle.

@@jdansie There is a 5K rebate plus dealer cash. You have to make a offer with a dealer that will deal. I gone mine at Simpson Buick GMC in Anaheim Ca. SUV's are the sales star right now so the wagon are not as popular as they should be like in European market.
