Manipulated election. Let's the problems France face simmer a bit longer. Every election le pen gets more votes... Every election the left play games and stoke fear in the later rounds to deny her and the voters what they actually want. Next cycle shit will hit the fan properly.

Appointment of Timpson is one of the very best things I have heard from Starmer. Absolutely agree that probably 2/3 of the people in prisons should not be there. Many of them are people with learning difficulties/disabilities and mental health problems. Punishment does not help people learn how to be part of the society we expect them to contribute to posituvely when they are released. Prison is not economically sensible or viable and socially it is a completely backward step.
Would you release violent criminals? Sweeping statement to say that 2/3 of prisoners should not be there. Certainly, people guilty of financial crimes only should probably not be in prison.
@@tancreddehauteville764 Did you listen? Timpson talked about three broad groupings of current prisoners, a third of whom, who'd include the violent offenders, do need to be in prison.
The LabLibCon alliance want house prices to grow every year and are always willing to implement coercive initiatives to encourage buyers to borrow way beyond their means just to put a roof over their head, They and their MSM friends have convinced the masses that ever increasing house prices will make them wealthier and getting on the property ladder is the only option.

Well put Ash on the cheap / spending distinction Please @novara media don't forget Palestine - so much has happened please bring it back to your agenda
It isn't that bold to be fair but at least it's winning. Now we wait for the socialist party and the green to betray, cause that's what they do here in France.
Whilst the result of the election is positive for the French left, let's not forget that the far-right has gained 50+ MPs, and the funding that goes with it. It's not over unfortunately.

Yes have to agree 100%! After she backed Starmer’s comments that Israel had a right to commit the war crime of collective punishment of 2.2million Palestinian civilians. Then when questioned by Ash said “ I thought they were just gonna turn the lights out for a little while!” Absolutely vile! This is Israel she was talking about! She’s well aware of the constant war crimes of this rouge state!
I agree that we need to build lots more housing, but you do have to add clarifications to that. We recently had a local campaign to save our local field (the council was labour run!!!). The field is in an area where loads of people don't have gardens and if it was built on it would become a major flood risk (it already is one so that is a big problem). It is a rural town, but this vital space is so important to our working class community. The conversation about these issues needs more nuanced by Novara in its reporting and analysis.
This is so important. Where I live in Kent there are lots of lego towns being built on our wildlife lands. They lack social and institutional infrastructures. They are on unadopted roads. They are not affordable housing. They are developments for profit that are destroying forever what little green spaces we have left.
I am quietly delighted that Ed Miliband is back and in government. Like him or not, sticking with it after his bacon sandwich ordeal and failure as Labour leader is what the UK is all about !!

It’s to early to judge Don’t get me wrong I’m with you and what you say but I’m also open to have my mind changed. It’s a fact that Labour have inherited a broken country and it’s going to be extremely difficult to fix it. So to speak.
The Macronists are not the center, they're the new right, they absorbed many leaders of the "old" right (LR) whose remains have had a hard time finding a place between the Macronists and the far right, which is why some of them (along with LR's president!) joined the RN in the end.
@@forianproductions6113 true, but these guys are the most rightist of all, calling for more "authority", law and order, and attacking Muslims. Attal's first law as a minister was forbidding the abaya in schools (not even a religious dress but it looked too Arab and Muslim to them).
@@RobinHarris-nf4yv Yes it is are you not listening? This is also going to be the case for NHS too, mark my words. What did you think the private sector are going to build houses and hand them over to the government 😂😂😂. It's tried and tested we've been doing this now for years and what have we got a housing crisis. Public housing is an investment and the money and assets go back into government and the economy to rebuild the country money going to private landlords landowners etc does not it goes into an account somewhere and nothing ever gets put back into the country. Look at the empty high rises built by the private sector with no one living in them because they are expensive and not fit for purpose as far as building regs go.
Personally the most concerning thing about the French elections is they had to use under hand measures (tactical voting) to avoid Le Pen's party winning a democratic election. I mean seriously... anyone not concerned about this? The Left needs to address the concerns that draws people to the right if they want to really earn a democratic mandate.
They have the potential to be under a communist coalition. So, many people will become more right leaning now. And yes to answer your question, that is strange
Definitely a shock considering the ‘Far right’ got the most votes but the least amount of seats in parliament. Almost as though the bureaucracy simply didn’t allow for the democratic process to function correctly, it gets messy when there are paper ballots.... It’s like labor’s win in the UK, less votes than Corbyn in 17’ and 19’, but apparently those were abysmal failures but the latest election was a resounding success. Interesting how media paints failure and success.
People go on about the concrete council monstrosities, but the quality of so many of these new builds are absolutely dire, not just aesthetically but in terms of the actual construction, sprawl, workmanship and literal structural stability. The whole construction industry has been incentivised over decades to be as cost-cutting and negligent as possible, and skills have degraded with it. I really hope Labour doesn't just call on these cowboy corporate developers. I 100% would prefer state built housing, but if they really are allergic to public housing, I hope at the very least they form new public/private shared corporations with majority public stakes, procurement, negotiations, local apprenticeships, warranties, and muscular legal enforcement of duties.
See Patrick Wright, A Journey through Ruins: The Last Days of London. I think it's here that he points out that a lot of the towers were built by Tories to keep the lower orders out of the Essex countryside. Didn't want them spoiling the Home Counties fantasy of England.
Just a little negative there. For what is to stop tenants from joining together and calling on the Govt to invest in decent, modern, lower-cost social housing? Instead agreeing any more stock transfers, is it not time to defend council housing - by pushing for the Fourth Option?
We do have protect nature Michael. And I think you shoukd be sent to live in bone of those soulless housing estates where you need a car to get to the shop. Never mind a pub or a cinema.
Starting my PhD this year - a specific public service related neoliberal critique 😅 thanks for that particular thought train Ash! Very insightful indeed 😂
I'm so happy for the New Popular Front coming on top and also for the Greens of France, as they more than doubled their seats. Had 15 MPs and now they have 33 MPs in the new Assembly! Also, it would be great to see a Green PM, as it's more possible to get elected with the abstention - or even votes - of the Together Coalition MPs! 👏🗳️💚
Glad Thornberry has been passed over! Couldn’t happen to a more deserving person. She’s learnt first hand that making a disgusting statement to back up Starmer doesn’t mean a thing he’s more than willing to let her be thrown under the bus for it!🤣👍
I was surprised and shocked to hear Michael Walker say its 'ridiculous' that local communities will resist the destruction of 'empty' fields from faceless housing estates built by the private sector, which will of course depend on home ownership and 4 & 5 bedroom houses for their profits. Meanwhile the majority of households in the UK already live in under occupied houses, second homes lie empty, rents are sky high, and we are in a climate, biodiversity and ecological crisis. This reliance on big business hardly differs from the Tories and has not yet solved the housing crisis -- but will instead increase inequality, promote expansionism and destroy nature. Ironically, while you celebrate the success of the Nouveau Front Populaire in holding back the far right, and the Independents and Greens in our own election, this laissez faire attitude tramples all over the progressive agenda that helped them to this success.
Reeves is like a teenager refusing to do her chores 🤣 The private sector hasn't filled the gap for the last 45 years, why on earth does she still think it's going to happen? She needs to get back in that office and plan some goddamn council housing and if she doesn't do it she's grounded. She's such a petulant little baby
You can't rip up planning regulations. Regulations are there for a purpose. New buildings are spriging up like mushrooms and most of it has nothing to do with providing good affordable housing...soulless housing estates with no infrastructure. We need very carefull and properly regulated planning to provide desirable social housing.
Michael's opinion on building on green space is as awful as always - for both housing and energy. Private developers and pro-privatisation Labour/Tories are going to select sites based on maximum profitability. Not minimum impact to ecology. Everytime Michael speaks about this he's basically saying 'yeah, private companies, build wherever you want. I'm up for it.' Both uninformed and informed only by London living. Britain is a big country. Try visiting some of it.
buying a house is not all what it cracks up to be. We felt like slaves to the state. Also, I don't agree building on the green belt. As well as people I care about threatened species. The list is many. Of course there has to be a happy medium and compromise+ studies. We cannot abandon nature just like that. We have eco systems. I am not a nimby btw. With the extra houses of course, you have to supply additional services like drs surgeries, school's, school teachers etc. My husband worked in construction and he came across many places and big houses owned by rich people not being lived in because they lived abroad. I think we need to look at what waste land we have too. 3story houses might be a good idea.More houses less land. The drainage system needs to be looked at too. We need to get that in order before housing. It's crazy.
Like the other commenter has said, it beats paying rent forever. I’m currently stuck in the rent cycle where I’m having to move all of my belongings every year or so to a new more affordable area and it’s paralysing not being able to ever settle down in my own “home”
Just to remind you guys when talking about throwing ourselves into building houses, wind farms etc to fix social problems, we are in the midst of an extinction event. Saying we might be "disturbing some of the birds" by building wind farms seems to show a rather flippant and devil may care attitude to the nature crisis?
its not humans that are going to be the reason its the sun. and thats something your windmills etc wont change. and its a carbon credit wall st slave system. youve been had...
Just lost my vote just showing their hands. No council housing built by the government. All profits to the private sector. In one day they’ve confirmed what I thought.
It's just more of the same feeding the public statistics they can't really use or care nothing for. 10 houses here and there 10000 it's just a broken record controlled by a mental parrot. If the government said something like iso containers or pods 3d built or quansic type American shelters even concrete sprayed tent style then at least then some ears might prick up. But it's numbers.
The country is crying out for affordable housing and nothing offered by the private sector is remotely affordable to buy or rent unless you are on above average earnings. Building mass social housing for those stuck in expensive private rentals would improve 4 million households lives to the detriment of private landlords and those that see a house as an investment. None of the 3 main parties will dare tackle the UK's housing problem in fear of the reprisals from MSM and the markets.
Another great show, thank you. I'm in France at the moment and it's been really interesting seeing what's going on here. On the issue of the national govt in the UK building more social housing and infrastructure generally, govt has lost the legal contracting, design, engineering and construction expertise it once had between the late '40s and '80s under neoliberal and austerity policies which therefore requires rebuilding the civil service over many years in the UK to 'do stuff' - I'm all for it but don't know about Labour under Starmer. To its credit the Albanese govt in Oz has been doing this to some extent after years of conservative rule and their contracting out a huge proportion of core govt responsibilities but there's no appetite for rebuilding infrastructure project implementation and construction capabilities in Oz or the UK it would seem.
James Timpson is a really good appointment and is making me a lot more hopeful I have to say. Justice reform is something I care a lot about and is never being talked about. Haven't liked Starmer's Labour but they didn't have to do this. Praise where praise is due.
The National Rally actually got by far the most votes yesterday and yet it came third, so it can hardly be said that French people rejected the "far right", being that they had almost 40 percent of the vote yesterday
If the strategy is to say Mélenchon will do nothing and have no power, the French left is completely doomed, we had similar things happening here in Brazil. I believe Mélenchon must get more popular without being any less "radical", without conciliation with the bourgeois.
E.Macron can't call for a new election for a full year. So for one full year it might be chaos at the assembly unless E.Macron resign (he can do it anytime) and we get an early presidential election.
Navara on its own or at least Ash must take over 10 am and be a permanent guest on 6 and 7 PM LBC program if we need people of this country learn to understand what's happening in politics generally, develop the skills to analyse matters without being emotionally driven or simply act as a sychophant to Starmer! I am not asking too much, LBC can keep the rest to exercise its right to manipulate minds but they will gradually and hopefully learn to follow a more sensible approach than having too many just talking cheap. The reason i didn't mention TVs or BBC, etc is because i am hoping that Navara takes over a public news channel if possible.
I live in Barnes, so much land here not built on? Have fields with one or two incredible expensive houses in it? Commons should be protected but empty fields along with rising homeless is appalling!
Houses though are built by individuals as well as by developers. Planning authorities specify a house's design, build and materials as well as holding a veto over the siting of a new build. Planning authorities have withdrawn from public site the guidance they used to publish on what they allow and what they don't. The citizen is obliged to seek their permission by trying to fit their own idea into the authority's online procedure. The authority will not meet an applicant nor will they speak on the phone. One is allowed only email contact with a non decision maker. Alternative and DIY housing should be allowed and not stopped. They approve some dreadful builds, poisonous materials, poor designs, dull building.
Money government receives has never been higher, so what happens to all that cash? Surly government could borrow on that guarantee & start to replace social housing? Loss of social housing has been disastrous!
Good video as always guys but as a development exec (renewables and some housing) with a lot of experience with the planning system, it was evident you don’t really know much about the planning system. The changes they’ve hinted at will make a very big difference if they are followed through well. It cannot be overstated how much the NIMBYs run the planning system and how broken that system is. Of course I agree it would be good to have public housing but you downplayed the planning reforms too much without really understanding it and its challenges.
I believe planning for things like renewables can take 12 years and more. Sizewell planning application 300,000 pages and told to resubmit as too short.
I don't think people understand that despite how much the planning industry is reformed, the archaeological industry does not have the capacity to expand as things stand. A housing development that's given the go ahead to get started today still won't be able to start for at least another year or two, if not longer. Before this we needed a third more archaeologists than we have, and the companies that exist can't hire that many more people
Its important to keep in mind that Marshall aid was to be withheld if the French were to let communists run campaigns let alone run parts of the government by our dear Stars and Stripes

Not really a shock, they've been doing it for two decades. However, it's interesting that no matter how angry people are getting with government, none of them are suggesting solving the problems, or even addressing the issues that the people are angry about. This means only one thing. Career politicians are working for someone else.
If you're going to judge Labour on it's first 100 days, please try to be fair and bear in mind most governments are elected in May whereas this government has both the Summer recess and conference season within it's first 100 days. Not to mention Sunak blocking the civil service discussing plans with Labour as the official opposition (breaking the norm in order to salt the earth). I am hopeful that they will still deliver in their first 100 days but if you're going to compare with previous governments, you need to understand how this election was very different.
The New Popular Front, like the old popular front, is center-left. Even if they had a supermajority in parliament, which they don’t, their program would still be muddled and internally divided. That said, this is still good news. Wish they had gotten a majority though. Someone will have to deal with the National Rally problem, and soon.
