I think Commander class was a game changer for Hasbro engineers because they could finally do these larger, more expensive toys with larger budgets and modern engineering.
This was my first Optimus Prime toy back in 2003. Got it on a clearance sale. This is a must buy for me. It is gonna be weird to have articulated legs on this design after having played with the OG for years.
@Allan Casas There is a posable Mega SCF figure of the Super Mode that exists but it was released in the 2000’s and probably not common to find on the aftermarket. They even did the other characters in the animation accurate styles.
It's so weird, I was a kid when G1 was a thing, but Armada Prime is easily one of my favorite designs. I can't explain why, but this new toy has me so happy. Absolutely getting this one. Now where's Tidal Wave?!
@@pillarsofsnow7940 Absolutely, you're spot on. Normally people latch onto the Prime that they grew up with, but in my case, Armada Prime is just so cool. Though to be fair, I don't really have a lot of the hardcore G1 love compared to some. Some stuff worked, some stuff didn't, and plenty of characters from later lines really nailed it.
@@galmorzu I grew up on beast machines, lemme tell yah, growing up with hair brained hippy monkey man still does not positively incline you to that design
Looks amazing, I love the main prime robot mode a ton better than the MB-15 Naval Commanders one. Super mode looks a lot more posable than that one, too, and probably easier to pose too haha.
Man when it was in early prototype stage i tried to get them to change the design making his shoulders little widrr, since it looked like crap, but fans hobby did replied and said it was too late. But when they announced megatron me and this other dude told them the shoulder looks little off, why not make it wider like in the show and they did fixed it.
The vehicle mode as well, the way they put the headlights as part of the breastplate on Naval Commander instead of the shoulders left the front of the truck looking nothing like how he's meant to, this is way more accurate and looks way better. I have Naval commander (like many it's broken now but still) but I will definitely be getting this figure
even though i dont collect mainline anymore i always liked armarda optimus design especialy his wirist blasters this is definatly got me thinkin of picking it up
I bet they could get away with a cab-only Nemesis repaint for Velocitron as a voyager. That way BotCon Astrotrain could be possible from a leader Jetfire down the line.
That depends on what parts are gang molded and if gating can be used to only cast part of the mold in such a way as to avoid casting trailer parts for such a hypothetical release
I love him so much, my prime is perfect. Also, he has a waist swivel in Super Mode, just under the crotchplate. Also, the core classes accessories are just 3d printed
Yeah, I noticed that too. Reports did say that normal Optimus doesn't have it but he does in his super mode. Optimus in his normal robot mode also has an ab crunch because those joints are used for the super mode shoulders. Which is pretty cool.
@13:59 it looks like the super mode has a waist or below the waist joint. Look at the gold parts on his hip. They seem to be ever so slightly off centre's when compared with the horizontal blue bar above. Either way, super stoked for this figure!
Sweet, so happy Armada Prime is getting some modern love. Armada Optimus Prime is my favorite. I still have 'Bendy' Optimus on my desk, along with the Nemesis repaint.
This is nostalgic for me because I was in college and after RID…Armada was giving me that nostalgic G1 feel and I watched the show to completion. It only lost me near the end of Energon…..on the flip side..how in the world are the manufacturers letting this stuff walk! This isn’t even announced yet.
If you look at the image of the combined mode where he looks like he's ready to hug you (one of the first ones), it actually does look like he has a waist joint. It looks like the blue section that the truck front pegs into is separated by a swivel from the legs and the front crotch skirt, with the hip skirts being mounted to the waist above the swivel rather than below.
I'm glad we're getting him! the figure looks fantastic! although I wish he had that "long-tailed commanders coat" that the toy and some art made it look like he had, might be able to fix that in the future. looking forwards to Armada Megatron in the future, and hoping for an Armada Jetfire to go with this. maybe an overload too, since he could work as some kind of future weaponizer.
The prophecy is coming true, Armada Optimus Prime will return. And we have a leak first look at his figure. And he's awesome. The best Optimus Prime design outside of G1 continuity.
Rambling about one toy? No, you're fine man. The king of that is Dr. Lockdown. Great commentary but an hour and twenty minutes to cover a figure, their history, and nuances is goddamn wild. Condense that shit. You're good.
13:00 Seeing the shot of Super Mode Prime pointing his gun at the screen reminds me quite a bit of a Hatena Blog post from Bandai's Kamen Rider development team showcasing bits of their then-upcoming toys (specifically new Legend Rider versions of the Typhoon and Arcle, and the Shindai Siblings' Seiken before one of the devs raise the prototype Jikokuken Kaiji at the camera as if to attack the cameraman. It's basically a message telling you to stop peeking at spoilery stuff.
Yayy!!! Armada Optimus!!!! WOOOOOO!!!!!! This is **MY* Optimus Prime!!! Go Convoy!!!! Also, why do people INSIST on putting Starscream's cannons flat against his back?
My Transformers childhood ranged from G2 through Armada, so this Optimus Prime is technically the last Prime design I see through rose-tinted glasses. It looks fantastic, and I hope I can afford to pick it up by the time it releases.
Armada Optimus is definitely a case of being my childhood Prime, and my favorite Prime design and character thus far. Garry Chalk's Optimus Primes are the last instances of a dad-like Prime we've ever gotten, and I really miss that approach to him. When I saw that prototype years ago I was so hyped to get ANYTHING of Armada Optimus again, to the point I would happily accept a stylized re-imagining of him, but when things went silent on him I just felt my heart sink. It did showcase that more of the community wanted Armada than people likely thought, and resulted in us getting third party Armada toys for the first time, but those have just been... _off_. Namely the Fans Hobby Optimus with all of its' wonky proportions and design choices, it just didn't look right or fun to me. But Hasbro, my god, seeing them make a show-accurate Armada Prime, and hit it out of the park like this, I've been nothing but giddy since yesterday. This is a day-one-pre-order from me the moment he's posted. I'm so hopeful we get some Minicons in some form at some point, but otherwise I can't think of anything else this figure needs besides *to come out sooner.*
@TJOmega the blaster from the Grimlock isn't a new piece. It's just the barrel section from the Pinpointer Targetmaster from the Siege Netflix release of Megatron, the barrels pop off very easily and you can even see the hinge where it connects in the photo its also using Pinpointer's included blast effects.
Man, he looks absolutely fantastic. I wish Cybertron Optimus would get this kind of love. Will definitely snag this guy when he comes out. Let's hope his quality control is better than Starscream. I hope Mini-cons are on the way, we need a Sparkplug, Swindle, Jolt, and whoever else may come out.
I got the final battle (dark Grey, Maroon an off blue with a gold goldbug) ver for Christmas back when I was a young kid, I hope they release that color again
The original actually had 7 points of posability in Super mode. Head swivel, shoulder rotation, bicep rotation, and elbows. Each arm has 3 points and then the head has the 1.
If they dared to make another pair of Micromasters again, I'd want it to be Sparkplug and Over-Run. And, specifically, a new mold for Over-Run to recreate his gun mode. We got plenty of car molds to choose from for Sparkplug.
I got out of collecting Transformers a few years ago, but getting HasLab Star Saber made me reeeeaaally itch to get back in. I'd been on the fence with Legacy Tarn, Leo Prime, and Animated Prowl being my biggest temptations. But this guy? Oh yeah. This is the straw that breaks my back.
If you look closely, it does seem like the super mode has waist articulation. If you look in the picture with his arms out, the bottom part of his pelvis is on a slight pivot
I cant believe it has been 20 years since I got the Armada Optimus prime as a kid, sadly it was the version without the trailer so it lacked the transformations with jetfire and the other one which ironically I had them.
This iteration of Prime is largely an academic thing for me since I'm well past the age-group that'd be primed (heh) for the nostalgia bait, but it is neat to see other bits of the fandom getting their due finally. I wonder how many other "dude that combines with their own trailer" releases they can trickle out successively...
The only thing, the only _minute detail_ that I don't like about the super mode is the eye colour. They kept the yellow eyes when he actually had red eyes in super mode. Again its nothing uber important but it would have been nice for them to give the super mode its proper eye colour.
From what I can tell the legacy artwork is based on the old prototype due to the chest design so either the artwork was made before this design was finished or this is the version of the prototype that was within the budget.
I saw a picture on Reddit of original Overload docked on him. And in the back shot you not only see the 5mm ports, but there's a red slot that looks about perfect for attaching Overload. So they want to do a new Overload, it's got the connection points. Jetfire is just making it compatible with the ports on the smaller prime. Both though might be tricky as it requires something to go where that back panel is on the prime.
As a kid, I did start with Armada. Looking back, I enjoyed the show, but honestly, my favorite part of Armada was the designs. If you’re going to give Optimus and others new designs, this is how you do it. Probably my favorite design for prime that’s come since G1
This figure has been a running joke on my channel for a long time. That gray model definitely threw everyone off. It drove us nuts. And now we find out they basically nixed it lol.
The gun that core class grimlock is holding is not a new accessory. It is one of the barrels of one of the target Masters that came out in siege/Earthrise.
Legacy has accuracy, and naval commander has playability. I’m not sure I’m gonna get legacy since I’m already neck deep with fans hobby and my budget, but hopefully I can pick him up in the future.
Armada Prime isn't my favorite design, but as a fan of RID 2001 Optimus and the ability to combine with his trailer, this looks really good for fans of the design. (Now I hope we get one for RID version!)
Forgive me for saying so TJ, for I know this is a PG channel, but I bust the world's biggest nut looking over how amazing this toy looks! While my butter zone of the Unicron Trilogy is in fact Cybertron, Gary Chalk's Armada Optimus Prime is THE definitive Optimus Prime to me. I own the Cybertron repaint of the "Bendy" Prime, But I will pay top dollar to get my paws on this toy as soon as I can! The back looks primed to have a Jetfire or Overload Legacy toy to combine with it too! And reading the comments, seems the original Armada Overload MIGHT still fit. Have to do a bit of research on that, but if it's true, hopefully I can track one down without breaking my wallet too badly.
No apology needed! You were ... um...intentionally spacing them out.. to.. err... build up excitement and anticipation... as a good creator should! They are so much more satisfying when you DO actually get to the reviews! 🙂..yeah... thats it! Although I love watching the episodes and then follow it up with your analysis... I still watch every video because... just like everyone else. I like YOU! You could be reviewing the newest wave of Paw Patrol toys.. and I would still watch!
Knowing hasbro, I have a feeling they will release the prototype mold in the future maybe as a select? Or as apart as legacy as a leader. I mean they have done something like that in the past, I fail to see why they can't do that now. Not only that, the prototype mold was shown on the box cover for legacy.
He does look -really- good. I agree though. At the deluxe class and even the voyager class, no minicon was forgivable. Not at the commander class. (Same for Cybertron Metroplex) Leads me to believe Armada Megatron won’t have one either.
The slots on the back of his combined mode also look like they are in the perfect shape for Overload/Ultra Magnus/Sentinel Maximus' weapon mode. There is a picture of this toy combined with Overload so it MIGHT be backwards compatible with a 20 year old figure but I am also speculating that it is just piggy riding him on a not secure connection.
when he showed that grey one and i do remember seeing years ago and i was hyped and then it just stopped and then naval commander happened and i wanted that because one year i had $300 and i was ready to pay for a $184-$185 toy but i let time go on and just let people speak their minds on it and all i got was bad news about naval commander that it was cracking and breaking in spots that it shouldn't and to make things worse i heard that a extra $50 was put on it for shipping and jacking the price from $184-$185 to over $200+ and i wasn't pay for a $200 toy and not hardly have any money left and so i looked for something else and i found titans class scorponok and i got that instead for $160 and free shipping and now i see that new optimus prime i don't know if or when its gonna come out but it had better be under $100 and i will get that if i can. rip naval commander.
Finally: a Commander that 100% fully justifies its price point all by itself. We haven’t had one of these since Jetfire! Actually wait. Was Skylynx Commander or Titan?
