Excellent short film! It is good to see Star Trek return to its roots: professionals working well together toward a common goal. The actors are believable and have chemistry. Ms. Brown, in particular, is charming and utterly believable as a Starfleet captain. And the Enterprise B has never looked better. Nice work.

The guy was AY TOO OLD TO BE AN ENSIGN. THAT IS THE FIRST OFFICER RANK AND ONLY FOR YOUNGSTERS LIKE Harry Kim age. This stuff always bugged me on STNG which tried to stick with a logical military rank formula, but often failed! Just like taking YEARS to finally develop the enlisted rank like Chief O’Brien who didn’t get a proper rank insignia until the 3rd season of DS9!!

It was weak but ok, the Harriman ancestor was WAY too old to be an ensign rank, which is for very young officers! He was at least 38 and should have been at least a full lieutenant or lt commander! Like Data 26 years in Star Fleet and an Android should have been at least a commander like Riker! Plus any lower rank immediately stands when a full captain addresses them! My 23 years in a real military makes me an expert...

It's always great to see more Star Trek Fanfilm productions. There are always more stories to be told in the universe. :) The story is compelling and well done. I do have feedback for the visuals however. Especially the space shots. Please do not see me writing this as hating. I know how much hard work goes into this and it is good work! It's really just feedback and things I think that could be improved. The models used in the fanfilm are great and rich with details, but the lighting is doing them a big disservice. The flat and overly bright lighting, as well as the lack of hard, dark shadows, makes them look much more like toys or unreal objects (they are unreal of course, but CGI always has the goal of looking as real as possible :D ). I'm not talking about implementing Picard-style lighting (I like actually seeing what is going on :P I still love PIC tho) During scenes like 0:36 or 0:57, the flat lighting and the washed out shadows really take away from the scene. Especially during 0:57, the big lights pointing towards the promenade might make the station look much more impressive if the shadows were darker and the smaller lights a bit stronger. It looks like a great light setup for a majestic space station - so let the station light itself! :) I guess you are trying to go for a more OG Trek look aka TNG, DS9, etc era. Especially DS9 utilized harder shadows and less ambient light to hide imperfections of the early CGI, which makes some scenes still hold up well to this day. They ramped up the glow of the warp nacelles instead for example. Without Raytracing, they didnt really have light bouncing off the hull, but it still made for a visually interesting picture. But they did have real ray tracing when using the physical models in the shows, to have light actually being reflected on the hull. Think of the Defiant doing her loop in the final battle of Cardassia or the Enterprise D approaching the Amargosa observatory during her first shot in Generations. Or even the fleet battle in First Contact. While there were no physical models besides the Big-E (and the Defiant, I believe), most of the models used in that battle were much worse than the quality models in this fanfilm - but the lighting made all the difference. But as I said, I'm not hating. The lighting does certainly work for some scenes. The Runabout fly-by at around 4:55 is pure *chef kiss*. It looks perfect. Paired with the planet at 5:10 with the hard shadows makes for great composition. I'm a huge fan of the lighting done in "Resistance: a Star Trek Fan Production". The contrast and color grading make for a very interesting much more real look overall. Maybe a solid middleground between those two would amp up the realism in the VFX shots.

I'm wondering . . . Perhaps the Ensign experienced something equivalent to what Captain Picard did in STNG Season 5 Episode 25, "The Inner Light" (one of my all time favorites, I happily admit), as a half hour flew by as he held the phaser. A lot of intrigue in this episode, I cannot help but think Sam😊 included "easter egg" encounters in this film for us to ponder. Really excellent episode, Bravo to all of you and thank you very much for your efforts!

Thank you for this. I watched it together with my dad. You can feel the respect for Star Trek, the passion for recreating it's vibe, the dedication to detail and the genuine fun being had. Until very, very recently I had no idea how much Captain Harriman's character had been fleshed out, I was only aware of Alan Ruck's brief portrayal in Generations. I love the design of TOS movie era ships. Any time I get to see them mixed in with TNG/ DS9/ Voyager era, it makes me smile. I saw it stated in another comment, seeing starfleet officers portrayed as professionals and actual mature adults is sorely missed. All the previous series had their jokes and fun, but it was never world-breaking. Captain Keller's line. "I don't have much interest in non-science missions." really spoke to me. I enjoy all aspects of classic Star Trek: diplomacy, action/ confrontation, exploration, etc. but the scientific aspect is one I sorely miss. Ensign Harriman's lines about feeling the pressure of his ancestors' legacies can be seen as also speaking about the legacies of all the classic Star Trek series. RU-vid fan videos can be a real mixed bag, IMO Ensign Harriman and Captain Keller held their own and more with this mission.

Nice! Good performances, definite improvement in the compositing - felt like they really were in the runabout and only a couple of minor hints of the green screen. Fun little adventure that leaves just enough unanswered that a sequel or prequel is totally warranted. Also judicious use of musical cues from the movie era TNG, DS9 & Voyager.

2:07 11 months later, and I just got that Harriman pitched the idea of the Prometheus-Class to Scotty. It’d make sense that he’d be the one responsible for such a thing. Aside from just that nod? I loved this episode, I’m rewatching it now after seeing Captain Keller in the Prodigy Reckoning episodes. Same with all the others she is in, from The Holy Core where she lost her first officer in a temporal incident, and the Icarus incident where she lost her ship, the U.S.S. Vigilance to a natural graviton surge from the star she was examining. She’s forward thinking, curious, tries to be as understanding in any situation, and doesn’t let the downsides get ahold of her. I’d say? Despite losing her First officer then her ship later? I think Keller would be a very good captain to serve under in Starfleet!

Loved it! Definitely part of my canon. One small critique: The station could use some more work. The ships look as good as physical models, but the station is still very much cgi by comparison, if that makes sense. Maybe it needs better texturing or something, I dunno. But the actors were charming and had good chemistry. I liked the small mystery and personal connection. It's a nice change of pace from galaxy ending threats.

@@SGUDistantHope I think you did well to populate the lounge area with soft focus CG characters, and as I'd expect with Samuel the in-flight segments were very show accurate. I also liked the dialogue around the phaser being pristine, because I immediately had a mental note as to why it would be so having been there so long. I also wondered about the lost time perception. My only note, such as it isn't, is that hair sometimes got lost on the blue/green/orange screen - not my area but I don't know if another colour or something would help? I noticed you'd reproduced the window verticals in the Runabout although maybe they'd be lighter? Don't think we saw that section of the runabouts very often...

11:58 geeze, one would think starfleet would teach phaser safety. he just violated all 4. 1. theres no such thing as an uncharged phaser. always treat them as if the safties have been bypassed. 2. never point the muzzle at anything you do not intend to fire at (in other words, its considered bad form to muzzle sweep your superior officers or your own head over and over again) 3. be aware whats in front of, beside, and behind your target, 4. keep your appendages off the activation switch until youre ready to fire the phaser. none the less a great episode.

One thing though, and this is just my opinion, Ensign Herriman seemed a bit old to be just an Ensign, I would have made him a Lt. However, I also do understand that one can join Starfleet at a more advanced age (within reason of course) and become an Ensign later in life. Loved this!!

And, are you going to show us what happened to Captain Harriman at the Oasis? I think Sam 'dreamed' about it during those 'lost' 30 min. Might be a good tie in to the Alien race 'discovered' on TNG that 'seeded' the planets with various races. Just discovered your channel. So impressed with this short film. The two actors were really likeable. The scenes on the shuttle reminded me of the episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation, Timescape, from Season 6 with Picard, Geordie, Data and Troy returning from the conference and having a bite to eat. Very well done!

@@SGUDistantHope I really enjoyed how it captured the the feeling of exploration for the sake of satisfying curiosity and the expansion of knowledge. No calamity. No pending world ending disaster afoot. No superheroics. No melodramatic tension between characters. Just "hop in and point the ship that-a-way" to uncover a mystery. I loved it.

Many ST fan films leave me a bit disappointed. This was quite good. No attacks ... no phaser fire, just a simple short story that connects back to the E-B without some time travel or unexpected appearance of John Harriman. The story is clearly written, well presented, and complete. Perhaps the only small question is why Sam just stopped scanning and looking around. His lost time was unfortunate. Thanks for an interesting short film!

Just as a modern Earth gun should always be treated as if it is loaded, your finger should never be anywhere near the trigger until you are ready to fire and you should never point the end of the barrel at anything at anytime unless you are ready to shoot whatever it is pointing at, I couldn't help but notice the blatent disregard for any safety measures in regard to how that phaser was being handled. I am also fairly sure that Starfleet would have regulations that mirror these ancient Earth gun safety rules. You can never be to careful. Watch it again with this in mind and you will be shocked and dismayed.

I always said there is possibilities! The next series should be about the enterprise b in the late 23rd century. With a new crew and fimilure characters exploring new worlds. And settings with the romulands and kilingons and visit version 3 to go in time to retrieve captain kirk with the enterprise b with a new crew. Gary baxter
