I remember reading about this pretty much unheard of proposition in a radical newspaper in 1993-94, and my first thought was that this was the most ridiculous idea ever. The journalist wrote that the most humane thing is for the state to provide FREE HEROIN for all heavy users. Not subutex, not methadone, but the real deal, twice a day performed by medical personell under controlled environments. I thought "get the f*ck out of here with that craziness". But then I finished reading read the article and it made perfect sense. Everyone wins. No more dirty drugs, no more dirty needles, no more overdosing, no more heroin mafia. The users can start putting their lives together, instead og figuring out who to rob, scam or blow for the next fix. Reports from other countries such as Portugal and Switzerland are positive. I've tried to strike conversations about this in social settings, because I'm an idiot, and people just get super pissed off before even hearing the arguments. 98 % of the general public in my country still seem to think that the war on drugs is an amazing idea. And my country is flying high on the drug overdose championships, and in addition we have long , cold winters. Madness. By the way, I've never had, nor do I have any close relations to anyone who has ever had a drug problem of significance , so I don't have any other interest in this other than what I believe to be the best for society as a whole. First and foremost the users themselves.

True, I‘m from Switzerland, heard the stories from grandparents about the Heroin problem 30 years ago. I called the services that give you free Heroin to see if there were any conditions for getting the Heroin (there aren‘t). It works. If just the US wouldn‘t be so ignorant of the successes of other countries.

@NunYaaBizz
@NunYaaBizz 7 лет назад
Seb you say that because overeating is normalized. Everybody is doing it. The majority of people in America and Canada, including myself, are addicted to fast food and junk food. It's not easy to cut it out. It's been scientifically proven that junk food can have a similar effect on your brain as drugs, and is more addictive than a lot of drugs out there. There are millions of people struggling with weight issues simply because they are addicted to junk food, the same way addicts are addicted to coke
@sebcrakpot1234
@sebcrakpot1234 7 лет назад
NunYaaBizz Well if you put it that way then everything your body needs is a drug : sleeping is a drug, taking sunlight is a drug, relaxing is a drug, working out is a drug, loving is a drug, sex is a drug, communicating is a drug, etc. Anything that your body needs will obviously make you feel better and make you want more otherwise how would life know how to survive. Let's just say that some "drugs" are worse than others. Let's also say that if everytime you over-ate you would have sniffed a line of coke instead you would probably be long gone by now or be a total brain-vegetable.
@NunYaaBizz
@NunYaaBizz 7 лет назад
Well I didn't really clarify but I'm talking about people who have issues overeating junk foods such as cookies, cakes, chips etc. It's fine having junk food every now and then but there are a lot of people that have issues with binging. When you eat junk foods your brain releases a surge of dopamine. After a while it goes away and your left with cravings for sweets even if you just ate. When eating junk food/foods high in sugar brain scans show your brain has the same type of activity as someone using cocaine. if a person who eats a lot of junk food and foods high in sugar changes their diet to a healthy one, they will experience withdrawal effects and intense cravings. With a diet high in junk food you will be fatigued, decreased brain function, poor sleep, mood problems, increased risk of diabetes and heart attacks, increased blood pressure,etc. etc. Look how many people are dying of heart attacks, diabetes, high blood pressure and they still can't stop eating junk food. People who are obese, want to lose weight, but can't stop giving into cravings of junk food. tell me it's not like a drug. Binging on junk foods isn't the same thing as sleep, where sleep is a necessity and eating foods that have an abnormally high amount of sugar and sodium isn't

also, if drugs are legalized and regulated by the government, we have more purity in the drugs. this means that drug dealers who use rat poison and other lethal toxins within the drugs to quickly create more substance, are virtually eliminated. the taxes it would generate for the government would also be substantial and only beneficial for our countries.

@2m7b5
@2m7b5 8 лет назад
It doesn't make economic sense for a dealer to cut drugs with poison. You want your customers to come back not die. Dangerous combinations do happen though. I know ecstacy tablets sometimes have dxm in them which causes serotonin syndrome when taken with mdma. Also NBOMEs and 2Cs are sometimes sold as LSD.
@Mapstom2018
@Mapstom2018 8 лет назад
Arthur Thats what I mean, and its actually more common to find NBOMEs nowadays than pure LSD. You can also look at Pill reports a large percent of MDMA is not pure anymore. Why? Because when selling in raves and clubs repeat customers are rare, and ontop of this a lot of times the difference is unknown to uneducated individuals.
@alyssafeliciano1679

And that's considering also that most of my friends are liberal, and the fact conservatives would most likely plug their ears and hum loudly if u tried to talk to them about this because we all know their ignorance and fear runs supreme. So we are extremely Unevolved on this issue because one day all drugs will be legal... to eliminate fringe countries from having powerful warlords and destabilized border zones as well as fully defund terrorists. Legalization and decriminalization of drugs so far has only negatively impacted countries with a huge spike in homeless population that followed. Creating more drug addicts who lose their jobs and become homeless. Instead of legalizing drugs they should have created a drug rehab prison where they can throw these drug addicts in and cure them. After a successful 6 month term they can be released and have their drug arrest erased from record, to make it easier to get a job and go back to being normal.

+tristan slaughter Actually if we legalized murder, murders would "only" go up SLIGHTLY. That is true, because it's just human decency most people have. The point you are missing is that punishment exists to protect society. Also, it is wrong in a fundamental way to murder someone, so it being legal would just be wrong in a civilized society. All this does NOT apply to personal drug use, it's insane to suggest that.

Murder is quite a spurious point in the argument of legalizing drugs. So I won't justify retarded comments. Murder is morally wrong if you are religious or not. I am not religious but I understand that morality of protecting life is important. No one will argue in giving ppl free choice to murder. It's never justifiable (war aside.. Even then I don't know) but Legalizing drugs is completely justifiable in every way. Freedom of choice to acquire of ingest something natural or something man made is a freedom we do not have but should have. But sadly until the majority of us in this country are educated the government and the alcohol , tobacco and pharma companies and lobbyists will continue to reap the rewards of it being illegal until we finally evolve someday and FoRCE them to change and allow us the freedom to take and use what we choose! I hope I get to see that day

Laws stop individual murderers, just like they stop individual drug dealers. What they don't stop is the drug market. It would still exist even if there were only five drug dealers left. They would sell all of the drugs, and all of the users would still be getting them. Arrest four of them, and there is one drug dealer selling all of the drugs. The next day, another hundred thousand come to power. The war on drugs is extremely moronic.

Hate to ruin your plan Mr. Hall, but Portugal cut their overdose rate in half when they decriminalized all drugs. They also experienced a 71% reduction in new cases of HIV for intravenous drug users. Legalization will also cause a dramatic reduction in violent crime (street shootings, robberies, burglaries, etc.). Switzerland experienced this when they started making heroin available to users at safe injection facilities. At the end of the day, legalization will save thousands of lives.

@PhinnyCobbler To answer your question, absolutely. While drinking excessively can be argued as mind altering, but in order to classify that "excessive amount" we would have to argue that ANY chemical change due to taking drugs would classify as mind altering. This could be as simple as perking up from drinking caffeine( Technically the caffeine is influencing you) It would be more accurate to say the ABUSE of drugs is what society frowns upon, in your case binge drinking. I'm facing 3 years in prison for possession of heroin. I'm a drug addict. More specifically, I am a heroin addict. I do not use any other illegal drugs but heroin is the one thing that I can't figure out how to stop. Mind you, I get up every day and not only go to counseling, group therapy sessions, and the methadone clinic, but also I go to work 7 days a week. I am not a drag or drain on society and at the end of the day the only person my addiction directly affects is me. So why am I looking at going to prison for 3 years? Why does the government care what I put in my body??
@rs72098
@rs72098 4 года назад
Because what you put in your body can negatively impact other members of society. A drunk driver puts alcohol in his body and he drives on the same road as you do, that affects you. If you buy heroin you are also funding an illegal trade that kills people. You also are giving money to an entity that will no doubt use the profits to buy more of the drug and sell to more users who suffer medically. If you have health insurance, you are using other people's money to stop your addictions that damage your body. If you use government medicaid, you are also using tax payer money on your addictions. That's why the government is involved.

I've been a proponent of full legalization since the early 90's, but have a few adjustments to this plan. Full legalization of drugs made from naturally growing plants. Weed, coke, smack and their variants all legal. But it gets more complex with lab drugs. I think it would have to go through some protection agency first. I know people love their X, but there are some really dangerous chemicals in lab drugs. Yes, I realize drugs in general can be dangerous, but think some drugs should be held to higher scrutiny.
@guitarwhores753
@guitarwhores753 7 лет назад
Frozen Tundra No, I do NOT use drugs. I used when I was a teen to my early 20's, but I haven't used anything in about 20 years. I live in Central Texas and am aware of the drug wars in Mexico. Legalization and government oversight could alleviate a lot of the crime associated with the drug trade. I think all drugs should be certified and go through a strict oversight process, like diamonds out of Africa. If people are going to do drugs (legally), then they should have the security in knowing that the drugs did not cause harm to others from cultivation to processing. I am a proponent for legalization not because I want to do drugs, but because I believe people in the US should be free to do them if they want, without harming others. Our current drug policies harm everyone directly or indirectly attached to the drug itself. Drugs are amoral. The laws, are the immoral thing. They create the crime, they create the murder. People are going to do drugs no matter what.

She wouldn't have time nor money to get a license. passionate gun owners are generally speaking responsible enough to use them safely, as the culture they will subscribe too is ingrained with gun safety. Criminals will just buy guns off the black market and most of all, gun shop owners aren't robots, they have the right to not sell someone a gun if they feel their untrustworthy or unsafe with it and kick you out of their store.

ICEGOD KAZZY It is a natural and Constitutional right, our natural birthright from God: the right to self-preservation. Its main reason: a final deterrent against foreign and domestic tyranny. (See communist democides of 20th century.) Its secondary, commonsensical reason: to defend against civilian criminals (home defense, self-defense and defense of others). A privilege requires a license or permit; a right does not. “No state shall convert a liberty into a license, and charge a fee therefore.” (Murdock v. Pennsylvania, 319 U.S. 105) “If the State converts a right (liberty) into a privilege, the citizen can ignore the license and fee and engage in the right (liberty) with impunity.” (Shuttlesworth v. City of Birmingham, Alabama, 373 U.S. 262) ANY free man or woman has the unfettered RIGHT to own, possess, carry (concealed or openly) and lawfully use ANY weapon ANYWHERE he/she has a legal right to be. Period. Part of the price of freedom is occasional or potential danger. An absolute GIVEN of totalitarianism/communism (you know, where guns are banned) is that you have no freedom, and no security: your survival, imprisonment or execution is at the whim of oligarchical bureaucrats. To quote Benny Franklin: “Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety." #ShallNotBeInfringed

One big problem we have today is that the drugs are distributed by a black market. So we got no quality control and many drugs get diluted with substances who are much more dangerous than the drug itself. In Germany (where i am from) we had a case where a dealer added lead to his cannabis which resulted in a dozen of people being in the hospital. Thankfully nobody died but cannabis normally wouldn't bring them close to dying. Or take heroin as an example: In todays street heroin only 5 - 15% are actual heroin the rest are things it is cut with. Those added substances can be strychnine (rat poisen) or other dangerous substances. Additionally if you buy drugs from the black market you don't know how pure they are which can result in overdoses. This happens especially with heroin since you normally get such an unpure product. However if you come across purer heroin where 20 - 40 % are actually heroin and you do your normal dose you can easily die from that. Those problems would be solved by a legalization because then the drugs would be pure. Another point is the extreme violance in countries like mexico. 40000 people died there in the past 5 years because of the war on drugs and its getting more and more daily. If drugs would be leaglized the cartels would lose their only income and the extreme violance would stop. There are many more arguments but i'm to tired right now^^ Now its time to explain why I think there wouldn't be more problems if drugs would be legalized: 1. The consumers of those drugs are already here today. It's not like legalization would create a big drug problem (and if it did i personally would be fine with that). There may be an increase in the number of consumers but as portugal shows its likely that this would be on "light" drugs (such as cannabis or mdma) and there would be a decrease of consumers on "hard" drugs (such as heroin or crack). 2. There would be benchmarks on how much you could take and drive without a much higher risk of an accident just like we have benchmarks today with alcohol. 3. You can use the tax money you get from the drugs and invest them in prevention where studies have shown that its most effective. This decreases the number of consumers. 4. It would be social acceptable and no one would get his life destroyed by once being in prison for drug related reasons. 5. You keep alot of money away from organized crime. I could add alot more points but i'm really tired right now. If you (or someone else) got any arguments against me write them down and we can discuss about them. And if you are right then I'll change my opinion. But be aware that I've discussed with many people and no one was even close to being able to convince me. The only thing I want from you is to be as open minded as me and recognize when the other persons arguments are better than their own :)

Brian Burke The problem with your outrageous statement is that ... there ARE drug users today - alive and thriving.

Brian Burke Okay we're agreed. In the mean time then before all this funny business with drug legalization takes place, I'm going to attempt to drink 50 pints of whisky during a five minute interval because I also accept Darwin's theory and will it to take place, hopefully you will join me in this endeavour. Perhaps you wouldn't mind going first.

What an interesting video. I don't know about everybody else, but most of my favorite drugs are already legal. These include caffeine and methylphenidate (STMULANTS FOR THE WIN!!!). I can't help but wonder what it would be like if everyone in the United States just went about their day either stoned, tweaking or tripping on something.

Not to mention the money we would save on prisons because more then 80 percent of all criminals in the prisons today are there on drug related charges. You could also slap a tax on it and using both the profits construct rehabilitation centers for those wanting to quit. It is the very foundation of what it means to be free. People addicted to drugs should not be shunned as non productive members of society. They should be care for and helped to rekindle their sobriety and help in the efforts to make this world a better place for all, not just the super rich.

Its worth a shot.Prohibition and the teatoddlers did help reduce alcoholism significantly. It was organized crime and the wealthy that made trouble.

A very reasonable argument. I agree. Although I personally disapprove of all recreational drugs, from crack to alcohol, I'm not going to treat people like children and say drugs need to be illegal for the "public good." It is painfully clear that people are smart enough to get the drugs anyway if they really wanted to, usually through more dangerous and society-undermining methods than they would were drugs legal. Let people use drugs responsibly, or in a negative way and hurt themselves.
