All of my tests are conducted using KLIPPEL Hardware and Software. KLIPPEL is an innovative leader in providing unique test equipment for electro-acoustical transducers and audio systems. Founded in 1997 by Dr. Wolfgang Klippel, the novel techniques developed for control and measurement systems of loudspeakers and other transducers are the result of over 30 years of fundamental research. This provides more accurate physical models of loudspeakers, micro-speakers and headphones valid for both small and large amplitudes. The focus is on revealing the root causes of signal distortion and defects and giving practical indications for improvements in design and manufacturing of audio products. Those directive index curves are almost perfect, really good showing from Pioneer.

I... just don't get it. How do some of these companies making modern DSP speakers get the directivity so right, only to not apply the couple of filters needed for a clean frequency response. Sighs

I agree. It just seems odd to know how to design a proper waveguide - likely using measurements - and not be able to fix these other issues.

@napilopez Good question. However, from a business perspective, I think there is a fairly simple explanation... If you are a speaker manufacturer, ask yourself this: If we make our "budget" speakers nearly perfect, who is going to buy our more expensive upper tier or "High End" speakers (higher profit margin)??? Why bother when the performance of the much more expensive speaker is maybe just 5% better? To most general consumers, the industrial design or aesthetics of a product have MUCH more bearing on their buying decisions, as long as the performance of the product is better than average or at least acceptable, and especially in this price tier. IOW, if I am a budget-minded consumer (i.e. a college student, etc.), if I can purchase something that "looks" like it is "High-End" or "High Tech" and looks like it should perform well, and in fact it performs "well enough", that's where their money is going. Only when you become a true audio enthusiast do you begin to consider sacrificing the "looks" or aesthetics for better actual performance. For instance, there may be a far superior speaker that costs the same, but it looks very generic, "like every other basic, old rectangular speaker I've seen since the 1970's", even though it uses far superior drive units and a proven acoustic design. Most consumers would rather have items that "look expensive" and aesthetically pleasing in their homes, even if they have to sacrifice a bit of performance. Manufacturing a product itself is fairly efficient and straightforward at this point in time. But extensive R&D is where a company's costs increase exponentially. The expertise, equipment, and time involved to perform serious R&D and develop worthwhile solutions ain't cheap (example: Erin's Klippel NFS). This is why we see some of our most advanced technologies come from military and defence R&D and the resulting equipment. They are much more likely to apply a cost-no-object attitude to R&D, because the end goal is not based purely on a company's Profitably or ROI, but on securing superior technology in order to ensure national security. They also are not concerned with the aesthetics in most cases. Most equipment is designed and based purely on function, reliability, speed, efficiency, and ease of cross-platform implementation/operation. When you produce a somewhat affordable or '"budget-minded" speaker or electronics product that is expected to sell in mass quantities, even a few pennies saved per unit by not improving the acoustic design or electronics/DSP translates to a significant increase in profit margin. The inverse is true for true "High-End" products where only the best drivers, acoustic design, and electronics are implemented... The quantity of sales of these items will be extremely limited, so the prices need to be exponentially higher in order to provide a worthwhile ROI. This is the point at which a good DIY speaker design or kit becomes a much better value in terms of performance per dollar. It's the improved mid-tier product market where we as consumers realize the best cost/performance ratios, such as the *Kali IN-5* that Erin reviewed.

What you really need to consider and measure is the accuracy of reproduction of a pulse response as displayed via the input of a 1-millisecond pulse and a triggered, delay timebase oscilloscope. The measurements of acoustic energy output and distribution, have their place, but are of a lesser importance and are deceptive. Which is why, regardless of their other deficiencies, a simple, single speaker unit of a portable radio, is fundamentally more satisfactory to the ear. For reference purposes, since the dual- concentrics by Tannoy et al, suffer from a mechanical discrepancy via the the lack of alingment of the motor plates of their drivers, and without an intervention to correct for time alingment, a pair of Quad ESL speakers is probably the closest available. As for the recommendation by Pioneer, it is probable that -- and regardless of other considerations -- the best listening position is as suggested, since this will be more likely to be the sweet spot for best time alingment.

i was about to complain about the performance of the speaker, then i saw the price. if i am not mistaken it is a good deal for the money.

I really wanna know why companies decide on a reference axis when measurements say otherwise.

Thank you, this was by far the most professional review of this speaker but I'm thinking about buying the 8" version. Do you think it will do better in any of short comings you saw in 5" one?

Thank you! Very underrated channel. A direct VS comparison series would be great and, combined with your very data-driven analytical approach, surely will and well-deserved skyrocket the subs even more.

According to the spec sheet, the LF response goes down as far as 40Hz(which I was very skeptical of)...particularly in this low price range & I assumed that Pioneer fudged the numbers...but I didn't realize it would be this severe...only 60Hz...really? What about the L4 Club Bass setting? What is this frequency response graph based on...the flat setting? Anyhow...thanks for the comprehensive review....very helpful. 😎

It would probably be better as a closed-box, with damping material absorbing those internal reflections.

do you use any room correction when you listen to the speakers? i feel like that is something that not many people do and they should but for review purpose listening to the speakers as their "raw" selfs would be more fair

Thank you very much for this very complete review, there are few of these, if not the only one for this specific monitors, which i bought last week, and i was looking for something like this, but the algorithm didn´t take me to this channel till now I really apreciate the time you spend giving us all around the globe such technical tips for the vm series ;) while most of the others just talk about the basic features I wander as well how those graphics would be for other similar monitors like krk, yamaha, adam or the new kali ones, because everybody talks about them like the best, but i haven´t tried them, and it looks very interesting to know from your expertice in sound quality.
@ErinsAudioCorner

I appreciate that. I have actually tested all the new Kali monitors. :) I don't have any experience with the others you mentioned, though. I'd like to test the KRK but the one I've been eyeing has been out of stock at the retailer who loans me stuff to review from time to time.
