What’s the big deal with LEGO Monorail and what makes it so EPIC? In this video we are going have a comprehensive look at LEGO Monorail Airport Shuttle set 6399 released in 1990. I've got this set with the expansion set. It was a present from Santa when I was young kid in the early 90's. It's in exceptional shape, works and I'm just missing 3 minifigs but have all the parts and stickers. I have the original instructions for both 6399 and the expansion 6347. Now I get to play with it with my kids. I've considered selling but just can't bring myself to do it.

That is awesome to hear! Congrats if you've managed to keep it in good shape and hope the next generation appreciate its awesomeness. If you wanted the 3 minifigures, you'd probably find them for sale on bricklink. Since covid, the set has pretty much doubled in value and a complete set will go for around £500+

I have this set with instructions and all. I remember being little and spending days on end playing with it. And recently learning how much it's worth, I've never once thought of selling. My 4-year-old isn't quite ready for standard Legos (getting really close!), but he's absolutely going to lose his mind when I introduce this to him. I don't know how I learned to take such good care of my toys when I was younger, but I only hope that I pass that trait onto my kids.

It's such a great set and awesome if you still have it all. Yeah you can become a little precious with kids playing with it, particularly when it has become so expensive. Bit of a challenge to get kids to respect it when they have so much these days. Any tips?!

Finally bought it a month ago on Ebay, came in 2 weeks ago. Started saving up for it all the way back in January, toke me almost a year. Totally worth it, so glad I bought, have wanted this set since I was a kid, life long dream!

I just got a second hand selection of undetermined monorail components yesterday. It's probably one of the space sets but there's no real telling. Came in a bin of random gray bricks. There's plenty of track, the engine, the cars, the switch direction, and other goodies, but no colored elements to determine if it was space or town. However, I also recently found a load of red window units in another second hand shop so I think I'm going to Frankenstein together a train. I've got an old 9v battery box from when I was a kid so my train is going to be a little multi colored... It will be amazing in my city.

Hopefully you were able to work it out / frankenstien something together. How did you get on? Usually track and engines most expensive parts so if you've got those, you can work around it. Did you get it going in your city?

Thanks for that and welcome to the channel. Yep, monorail is definitely in my top 5 sets of all time. I was lucky to to piece it together pre covid... I was shocked at the prices now. Lets us know if you ever do manage to get it!

So I meant to add that I got my nephew invited in the world of lego and of imagination and MAN WE HAVE HAD AN ADVENTURER TOGETHER LIKE U WOULD NOT BELIEVE LOL!!!! He just got his very first lego train it's the newer updated green black railway one it might be a year old I think but none the less he loves it we had all kinds of fun while bonding like we always do we get together with my imagination and his we have the funniest stories I've ever heard of we throw all kinds of humor in it I'm glad he got his lego he is so blessed now he can have that same feeling like u did after opening that box full of adventure and excitement lol he reminds me of me when I opened up my first box Legos for myself when I was young lol so I know the feeling my very first lego set was black Knights ghost man I still have my black knight and horse that all but hey have a blessed one again c u later and as always keep building to the stars 😂

That is fantastic to hear and what I was hoping for! Being a rare set and the recent increase in price, unfortunately think it is something few people will get to really experience. I love the simplicity of the cog and the pin - it physically hits something and turns it off or the other direction. Something just done really smartly and well. Awesome you got to the end of the video, well done!

Hi Nice Set. Well, let´s talk about prices: Tracks: Most expensive track parts: short curves and track switches 2nd place: long straight tracks 3rd place: short straight tracks 4th place: stopper, curves and ramps (these parts were in every single Monorail Set). I collect the Monorail tracks, motors, etc. since 2014. In all these years I brought together round about 90 meters of track...It´s fun on exhibitions...

I’ve had this set for a long time, but it’s not on display at the moment. Your mention of the tight curves, however, gives me the idea of having it run along my bookshelves - I can have it running behind the books, ‘popping out’ every so often, and bouncing back at each end. The next rainy day we get, I’m going to try it!

Brings back memories.. I wish I didn't sell mine. I had 3 total, 2 used and 1 in the box never built brand new MISB, and the expansion track too back in mid 2000s. Regrets.. :(

There are actually two! One was ' Seatron ' , a space series that kinda ended up as Aquazone. And I've seen another City one in the background of a big shelf of 9V train designs. @@mattelder

If you can't afford the main core components e.g track, motors, chassis', i'd reccomend looking at the 3D printed monorail items

I'm not convinced the grey button on the battery is a true on/off switch though that makes sense. Had one as a kid and we weren't religious about messing with that button at end of the day. Battery didn't seem to run out quick and we played a lot with it. Always thought it was more of like a reset switch. The neutral position on the motor lm pretty sure is your on/off switch. Found out how big of a deal this set is, and we have a great deal of the parts still. Pulled it out at mom and dads at Christmas and started putting it together with my nieces.They really got into it. Missing one straight track as the most critical piece.

Thank you for this. Great explanation. I’ve always wanted to know the stud number of the radius. Looks like it’s 62. In all actuality, Lego should not try to regain the patent. It was a moment in time. What they need to do is engineer a new mechanical, non computerized, cog train using modern technic pieces.

Great to hear you enjoyed the video and explanation. That is an interesting idea not to regain the patent but engineer a new system. I guess the closest we are getting at the moment is the rollercoaster. Maybe if those little rollercoaster carts could be motorised, it could be the next generation.

I have this set that i got it as a gift when I was a kid. I had no idea that it was this rare or valuable. Would it hurt the value to buy a new set of stickers? Some of mine are missing or are misaligned.

Most people generally want originals. It depends on what you intend to do with the set. If you are just going to have it in your own house for your own amusement, do whatever makes you happy. If you are going to move it on, I'd leave the originals as they are. Maybe purchase a new sheet of stickers and include it with any sale. Then it becomes up to the purchaser what they want to do.

Has anyone else noticed a slight variation in directions for this set. Every pdf I can find shows a red brick with a notch where the wire connects the battery to motor however my original directions don't have this red brick and instead have a yellow and blue brick that sits on top of the battery compartment. Anyone know the background on the revision?

So I am curious...The Lego Monorail System, and the Airport Shuttle Track System, are the same System Pieces, yes no?

Monorail only had 3 sets come out that used the track back in the late 1980s. That is why they are hard to come by and expensive (it was also a premium set at the time so also expensive). The track is really well made. Given the recent rollercoaster style track, I don't think monorail will ever come back.

I recently took all of my childhood legos down from the attic, so my little girl could play with them. Turns out I still own a complete set, but I had no idea that it was worth hundreds of dollars. Now I’m in a bit if a dilemma 🙁 Should I save the set for my little girl or should I sell it to a collector and use the money to buy her some new legos? what do you guys think?

Really depends. If you want to keep it because of nostalgia, do that. She probably won't appreciate it so if for her, maybe try to sell it. They are worth quite a bit now, even if incomplete.

Good overview. It's amazing how much this has gone up in value. Doubled in the last two years... There are more unique pieces to this set. Those big white arches (Panel 6 x 6 x 9 Curved Top) and smaller yellow ones (Panel 3 x 4 x 6 Curved Top)... @@contactjd they always were on the expensive side but shot up during the pandemic. People got into lego and they only ever made 3 monorail sets.... basic supply and demand
