I had a similar technic set as a 7 y.o. (a rally dakkar rally truck) now i'm 39 and have a Ph.D. in mechatronics and i still love these. I went in a lego shop to buy a present for my nephews and left with a normal lego city set and a way bigger technic for me:)

Now if he could just make a transfer case to make a 4 wheel drive setup!

Just finished the Porsche RSR technic set. Even though it doesn't include a transmission I'm impressed by the inclusion of a differential and engine that actually works. It's my first technic set and I haven't watched anything about technic so it was a very cool surprise.

what would be absolutely insane is if this actually worked by pressure being created in the pistons so they push back onto the crank shaft making it spin like in an actual combustion engine (Please tell me to rephrase if you find a better way of saying)

I built something similar to this in my EV3 robotics class at school. We built a remote control and I programmed ours to steer, change gears, and have a constant output from the engine and a toggle button for reverse. Was only able to make a two speed due to limited parts. Also programmed it to send RPMs of the engine to the remote for analysis and distance from the nearest frontal object to the remote so it could theoretically be driven blind. I wish I had access to better motors and components so that I could build something closer to what you have here. I’d use the jointed axles for driven wheels under suspension. It’s possible it’s just tricky to design a suspension that doesn’t pull the axle out of the differential/ transfer case

Wow this is amazing . But it could get few improvements : 1.)add a clutch so when you re shifting gears and starting it's not hard for the motor (not this one since it's electric obviously but if it had ice one it wouldnt work as well.) 2.)add reverse gear .
