This is my detailed review of the Leica Noctilux-M 75mm f/1.25 ASPH lens, shot on the new Leica M11. This lens is absolutely mind-blowing for people photography: super sharp and crisp wide open at f/1.25 and the background blurriness is extremely dreamy so that all images have a nice 3D pop. This lens has my full recommendation for portrait photography, means head shots, half body shots and full body shots.

A good review and some really nice sample photos. I'm typically a 50mm shooter (usually with the 50 Lux ASPH and my M11 these days), but have been thinking of going a bit longer with my next lens and have been vacillating between the 75mm and 90mm options. Beyond the obvious aperture difference, how would you assess the Noctilux vs. the Summilux at these lengths? Sharpness, contrast, bokeh, etc. Also, is it realistic to use this lens handheld with the rangefinder? I'm not opposed to using the Visoflex with a tripod, but not having to do so would certainly add flexibility in use.

I do not ever want to use a lens like this. But, it does produce wonderful photos for sure. No question about that.

I am sure this is the best of lenses however its difficult to see significant difference between this lenses and my G Masters lens! Having said that, your images are superb and what a cool studio you got there!

Same combo here. I find it really hard to focus with the rangefinder, however live view with peaking works much better. Did you use your visoflex 2 when you shoot? Or the 1.4 magnifier? What do you suggest? Thanks

Nice vid! Do you always rely on the visoflex or do you dare using the rangefinder to focus with this lens?

Great Video! I would be very interested to hear your opinion on how the 75mm Noctilux compares to the 90mm Summilux in terms of rendering, sharpness and out of focus bokeh. Which do you prefer now that you have shot both? I own the 50 so I am leaning on getting a 90mm so interested in your opinion. Thank you,

Thanks Jose - I need to put the two lenses side by side and shoot them. From shooting both lenses I know that both are incredibly sharp already wide-open, in particular at the center. 75mm is also really good for landscape with compression effect, say, shooting ZH at foreground, the lake then medium horizon and the Swiss Alps in the background. The 90mm can do that too but compression is then more elevated ....

Nice review. May be a little weird question: Do you remember (or can you try) if the lens fits into the leather pouch with protection cap put on the rear mount side? Or does it fit in the pouch only without cap on the back?

Beautiful pictures, Math! But honestly can you realy use the rangefinder for focusing or need a tripod and the Visoflex? My guess is, this is an ideal lens for the Leica SL/SL 2, especially because of the IBIS in the mirrorless Camera. I BTW enjoy my old Leica R-Lenses with the Canon R6. They are fitting really well not at least because they are way smaller than the Canon L-Glass. :-) Thanks and have a nice Weekend! Greetings from Frankfurt am Main - Andreas

You did some beautiful shots in the studio. It's truly a remarkable lens. How is it for a carry-around lens with the M11? For example travel photos?
@mathphotographer
@mathphotographer 2 года назад
Thanks David. Carrying is not a problem at all, in particular since you likely carry a wide-angle lens plus the 75mm Noctilux. On average then about 500-600g per lens which is perfectly fine.

What lens would you recommend as the best portrait Leica-lens (SL or M)? People say for portrait one should choose between 85 and 105mm focal length. Do you agree with that or can you also go with the 50mil or even 35mil? When you have to pick one L-lens ànd one M-lens for portrait and never buy another one and money is no object, what would you buy? Thank you for all those great video's!

Great lens, lotsa fun with it (no doubt) ! Now if you, during the next weeks, think it is not as good as I thought it would be, I will get it out of your hands for € 999,- You don't have to send it to me, I will come by car, cross another country, and pick it up myself and even treat you for a nice cup of coffee with Swiss pastry or chocolate to your choice, and we can even talk a bit about Photography and Leica in particular. hehehehehe How cool is that Good weekend my friend !!

@Tedwill-home

Great video! Did you just use natural light, or did you use a flash transmitter and remote lights? It seems like the studio lights were bright enough combined with the amazing low light performance of the 75 Noctilux. Thanks for sharing!
@mathphotographer
@mathphotographer 2 года назад
Thanks Ted. I did not use the flash for the Noctilux shots, only studio lights. The flash was there for the Nikon Z9. You also see in the images that some have medium or higher ISO which happened when the studio lights were not enough to stay on low ISO. But higher ISO is no challenge for the Leica M11 ;)

the 50 .95 noctilux usually has some purple fringing...have you observed any of that with the 75?

At some point Math mentioned CA issues on the NOCTI. I believe he also said it wasn’t an issue to correct. If you are a LR user it’s often a one click correction.

Also ich habe mal gelernt, dass alles Glas was vorne auf ein Objektiv geschraubt wird, die optische Qualität eines Objektivs nicht unbedingt positiv beeinflusst!

The 75 noct kills the 90 lux. It’s not even a close comparison - to the point where I’m thinking, “could my 90 lux be a bad copy?”

This is a (quality) controlled environment, but how about candid situations? Doesn’t the weight and lens length preclude ‘quick on the draw’ shots? Why not try an impromptu session outdoors and show us what you can do!

A 20.000€ combo. It's not for ordinary people. But for the same amount of money wouldn't a pro rather get other gear (Blad for example) ? Personally I'll stay with my second hand M262 and Lux 50 for quite a while I think !

This is not a crytisism but you focus too much on the word "sharp". Sharpness is not everythong in the lens. This lens is mind blowing I agree. There are far more important qualities to Leica lenses that need to be addressed as well. Thank you. Just my opinion really.
@mathphotographer
@mathphotographer 2 года назад
Thanks TJ - "sharp" is important for me but I think I also addressed the smooth blurriness you get from these lenses with a shallow DoF as well as the 3D look (thought I mentioned it, for instance, in some comments on images). And yes you are right, "Leica look" goes way-off beyond sharpness, such reduction would not do justice to these fantastic optics.
