Join me for a walk around the centre of one of England's oldest cities, the modern-day metropolis of Leicester! Located in the East Midlands near the very heart of England, Leicester is a city filled to the brim with history, from the remains of a 1,900 year-old Roman wall to grand medieval halls, the burial site of King Richard III, spectacular 19th-century architecture, and more!
On our walk around Leicester, we pass a number of interesting landmarks, including Leicester Cathedral, Leicester Guildhall, King Richard III Statue, the burial site of King Richard III (car park), King Richard III Visitor Centre, St. Martin's Square, Leicester City Rooms, The Leicester Seamstress, Leicester Town Hall, Every Street, Leicester Boer War Memorial, Leicester Market, Leicester Corn Exchange, Gallowtree Gate, Sporting Success Statue, Leicester Clock Tower, High Street, the Royal Arcade, Silver Street, The Globe Inn, Coronation Buildings, The High Cross, Jubilee Square, St. Nicholas' Church, the Jewry Wall, St. Mary de Castro Church, Castle House, Leicester Castle, the Great Hall, the Turret Gateway, Trinity House, Newarke Houses Museum, De Montfort University Campus, the Magazine Gateway, and a mural dedicated to Leicester City FC.
Thank you so much to the following sites for their help in my research of Leicester.

🎤 To watch with subtitles, please click the ‘CC’ button on your RU-vid video player :) Good evening! And welcome to a bumper walk around the heart of one of England’s oldest and largest cities, Leicester - located in the heart of the country. With the best part of 2,000 years of history, there’s an unbelievable amount of things to see on a tour around Leicester, and we just scratch the surface of the city’s many sights on this tour! On our walk around Leicester, we also mention a number of famous names associated with the city, from Richard III to William Wyggeston and Gary Lineker. One famous figure who we didn’t get the chance to mention, however, was a certain Thomas Cook, whose name you may recognise from the modern-day travel industry. A major figure of 19th century Leicester, Thomas Cook began a career in offering trips around Leicestershire and the Midlands to local temperance societies, which laid the foundation for a business that, by the late 1860s, was offering trips and excursions to Europe, and even as far away as North America and the River Nile!

Its a place where the white people are the minority and the white flight has occurred! Cops too scared to give worshippers of the Mosque a ticket, Perter Soulsby , Councillors and all agencies too scared too wnforce the law to the violent an vocal Crescent and Star brigade. They are hot on Hindu, and SIkhs and even Chritians but cower to the you know who! Ahkbar! You get pockets of Indians and Whites an people who cant move out because they dont have the financial means. too move out. This is what all of England will be like, like Luton, Brum, Bolton,, Prestoen, Oldham, Machester, Telford, Cardiff, Sheffield, Northampton, Coventry,

I was born and raised in Leicester, I worked on the market when i was 15 and have visited all these sites on your tour. My mom works in one of the hosiery factories. I remember when all buses and cars drove in and around the city center, and to this day I still meet people at the Clock Tower when visiting.

Have always loved Leicester. The city just oozes History around every corner. Back in the '90's I spent quite a few days exploring the city and it's surrounds. The feet are itching, and the bags are waiting. 2023 seems like a good year to travel Home (Yorkshire born), and do some intense exploring. Especially with your inspiring walks to follow! Cheers from Oz!

Very interesting filmed tour, especially for its historic talked background. I visited Leicester just three weeks ago and, surprinsingly, even if I hadn't seen the film before, I walked in the city almost in your steps. I mean I was guided by my "pif", looking around me for interesting places to see, reading the panels I could find every here and there and, well, I saw almost everything it was worth seeing and visiting. Shamefully, I missed the Roman walls near St. Nicholas, which means I have to go back and visit again.

Nice to see the Historic side of Leicester, in particular the Guildhall and Mary De Castro and Castle court. Unfortunately, Leicester is not what it used to be, i have lived my whole life in Leicester and have now grown to despise it and move away. Seeing this Historic footage is a reminder of what i love about our Historic City, sadly around the City centre, little is left of it apart from the homeless, drug users etc

seamstress is Mary Linwood I believe. There was a school in South Leicester named after her, which was a girls school initially. There was also Linwood boys school, a 5 minute walk away. There is a new school, on the girls site. For many years the boys school became a community centre, until Leicester City Council chose to close it. It is now spaces for new business start ups.

William Wyggeston is pronounced “Wiggy-stun”, not “Wigston” which is a village outside Leicester. The grammar school was called “The Wyggeston School for Boys (later girls had a separate grammar school) and is still known to us older Leicester residents as “The Wiggy”. Our tour guide is obviously not a local man.

This makes me want to cry. In 2015 I fell in love with a boy who lived in Leicester. Those were the happiest days of my life, even if It didn't last long. I look back at the places we used to walk, and my heart hurts... yearning for that feeling again. I never loved anyone like I loved him. This city's name now creates an instant feeling of sadness and loss for a love I will never have again.

It's no coincedance that it's almost universally accepted that the most beautiful parts of our cities are invariably the oldest... It's incredible that our country is full of medieval and historically priceless architectural masterpieces...more often than over shadowed by a 1960's block of flats or a car park thanks to modern intellectuals, architects/cultural vandals who seem to despise our culture and heritage.

You can see that old Leicester owes it's architecture to the Roman influence. Where would have been Leicester without those Latin Romans. I'm afraid Leicester has been in steady decline after the Romans left. Even the old market place offers pitiful produce. When I lived in Leicester, the market place was vibrant.

Great video. As you say in your pinned comment; you've only scratched the surface of the history of Leicester and their is so much more that you didn't include. Sadly the city is, like many others, a shadow of it's former self, due in large part to internet shopping and not because of the influx of many different nationalities of immigrants, as all the idiotic, xenophobic and racist commenters believe.

Its history is no more interesting than many other cities. I was born in Leicester and will no doubt die in it. But I don’t love it.

100% I can thoroughly recommend two books by Francis Pryor, Britain BC and Britain AD. The MOST comprehensive guides to British history going right back to the ice age. I think there was a Channel 4 Series of the same name(s), so worth searching. Pryor debunks myth after myth such as the 'nation of immigrants' nonsense and 'English language brought about by foreigners' rubbish.
