Just was using this laptop and saw on performance mode the gpu was thermal throttling a little on very demanding games and settings. So I just elevated the rear end a little and the thermals just plummeted like 5-7 degrees. Any way this laptop has crazy cooling and the silent mode is amazing.
I have the same laptop and bought some stick on aluminum folding feet to elevate the back of the laptop. They work great for giving the computer the airflow it needs.
Decided on this laptop a few weeks ago thanks largely to your review. Coming from three XPS 15's previously, so impressed with the Legion Slim 5 14. Love it.
Got the same laptotp a few days now, the performance are great however I run through few issues : First the screen flash white from time to time when I change the screen or window I'm looking at, or even when watching videos on youtube by switching from normal size to full size screen (I test by doing it again and again and it happened like once for every 3 or 4 attempts ).. also battery life is not that great (3h just by watching youtube videos and using chrome with brightness at 50% and using balanced mode, with photoshop it lasts less than 1h ) , one more thing , it is really impossible to live with that OLED configurations on VIntage to prevent burn in (reduce brightnes on backgroud or on task bar every x minutes ) the switching is not smooth and not confortable to eyes. I hope that you give your opinion about this points (maybe it is only on mine ). Sorry for the long comment :)
@@mehdinajib8697 unfortunately I haven’t faced the issues you have mentioned. I dont use the Vantage OLED configs, I just have my display to turn off in 2-5mins when idle.
@mehdinajib8697 I use this laptop, and I have not experienced any of these. You should switch on vantage to Hybrid mode. Seems your dedicated GPU is always working. You might also want to change your power settings to balanced when using battery. Always try to use power from the socket if you are near one. Don't worry about overcharging, you can limit your charging using conservation mode in Vantage. I play and post my gameplay walkthroughs on my channel using this laptop and I have got no issues.
Great video. I’m thinking I’ll probably stick to either 1200p or high settings rather than Ultra, but I mean this is crazy impressive. Thinking I’ll likely pass on a PS5 at this point. Is this with 16gb or 32gb ram? I could watch a dozen of these.
Really nice testings, im seriously wondering which one i prefer, im between legion slim 7 16inch and this slim 5 14inch, i prefer the form factor of this one and the oled but the full aluminum build of the slim 7 and its upgradable ram. Just have to make up my mind. Your vids are helping a lot, thanks
Hi Beau, I have the same laptop, the only thing I have trouble is I can only get 60hz refresh rate when it's on the dGPU mode only, with Hybrid Mode, Hybrid-iGPU Mode, or Hybrid-Auto Mode I can only get 120hz refresh rate, if I press Fn + R or change it in Settings/system/display Advanced display to 60hz it will just remain dark, until I press Fn + R again to revert to 120hz. Do you or anyone who has this laptop have the same problem, or maybe it's just my unit, thanks in advance for any help. Happy 2024 to all.
I tried it, didn't work. I also reset the windows and still didn't work. I ended up exchanged for another one from Best Buy, and now it works. So it's just a bad unit. Thanks for your help and all your contents on this channel.
Rtx 4060 and 4070 laptop are alot worse than the desktop version. Its 5nm. I suggest all people to wait till Rtx 6060 4nm at least or if can wait till Rtx 7070 2nm (the best jump in performance at 60watt level) Because the rtx 4060 100w is 1,5x fast as a gtx 1070 150w desktop, not worth the money, considering the 1070 is worth 100$. A Rtx 6060 is 1,2x fast as a 4060 at same watt and a 7060 is 1,5x fast at same watt (like a rtx 4090 laptop). Who can wait, will get the better value for his money.
I saw the video of a reviewer and he complained that his 16gb ram slim 7 could not game properly in balanced mode. He complained of micro stutters on balanced mode which usually reduced heavily when he played on performance mode. Do you think this a power limit issue on the CPU or GPU in the selected mode or could it be something? Your tests show that most of the time, these PCs can game quite well at native resolution but his complaint got me confused.
Not sure to be honest. Could he 16gb issue. It’s rapidly becoming not enough ram in 2023. He could also have a lot of other factors like bloatware. These laptops are quite capable overall if you are reasonable with settings (aka not built for 4k).
If I remember correctly the reviewer said it was because the balanced + ai mode that was causing the micro stuttering. I can’t remember who the reviewer was. Will update when I find them.
@@cwp333I suspect you're talking about me! I actually reached out to @TechGuyBeau (big fan) in another one of his videos about my problem and he gave me some great advice. I never got to the bottom of my problem, maybe I was just unlucky, it could be hardware or something else. If you all want a detailed run through of everything I attempted over the two weeks of testing I'd be happy to provide it. Also, I just purchased this laptop and will provide my own review, I'll definitely be linking back to this video because what Beau shows is incredibly promising.
@@TechGuyBeauHey Beau, we had a brief chat about it in another video of yours. I suspect my issue was hardware related in the end but difficult to troubleshoot. I've actually purchased this laptop and will get around to my own review. What you've shown here is really impressive, thank you.
Goddamnit. This looks so good. Great video too! So quick one: I'm an OLED wh*re, and I'm looking to do some gaming and 3D work on a solid system. Contemplating getting a 2022 Razer Blade 15 OLED because of the extra screen real estate, macbook-esqe build & upgradability. Do you recommend I pick this bad boy up instead? Would appreciate a response, thanks!
That’s a hard comparison. Battery is better here, as is price. Performant should be similar assuming same specs. Razer is more sleek though. Screen is good on both.
did you make a decision? 120hz cap is the thing that pushes me away from the legion.. Not like the razer can hit 240 but it does go above 120 on max but not much.
@@highedupgaming6288 oh I don't mind the 120hz cap - it's a laptop LOL. But yeah man, I'm super torn between the two. I have to make a decision in a week... I know that the legion performance is slightly better, but I'm a sucker for a sleek, well designed Razer. HELPPP LOL
My Razor blade from 2017 wasn't cutting it anymore, the rtx 2060 just isn't enough and the laptop itself is has gotten really loud and runs super hot despite cleaning the vents lol. I bought this small lenovo 2 months ago and I can tell you right now it's so much better that any razor blade out there, I don't think I'm ever going back 😂
Hey Beau, coming back to the Legion' laptops again. Would you say the Legion 5 (16 inch) is the most capable in terms of max performance in quiet mode? I hear the Legion 5 16 inch can get 17.5 in cinebench in quiet mode which is just insane!
I have a video comparing the g14 4060’ against this. The g14 was a fair bit slower and ran much hotter. Maybe check out that video The 4070 is a faster gpu so hopefully it matches up better
Are your running RDR2 in Vulkan or DX12? Wow those 1% lows are atrocious on performance mode, something I was hoping to use. My old Legion Y540 2060 laptop didn't seem to have that problem. I wonder if a framerate lock would help at all
Wish they had an option for a 4080 or even a 4090 in the slim 5 14". I really love the smaller footprimt of the 14 but am really considering the pro 7i with the 4080 or 4090 now.
The issue with the slimmer chassis is they would need to limit the wattages on the 4080/90 so you’d get a fairly nerfed performance profile. The 7i with a 4080/90 will have super performance as you can really crank the wattages
@@tylerkrasavage5656the 4090 in the g14 is about as good as a laptop 4080 like in between the best laptop 4080 and second best. Its pretty much nerfed that hard.
