For the Legion 7, Lenovo slimmed down the chassis, improved the keyboard and reduced the size of the power supply whilst packing in up to a 2080 MQ super and an i9 10980hk.
I bought this unit for $2640 after tax from Lenovo and its specs are:
i7 10875h
RTX 2080 super Max Q
2 x 8GB DDR4 3200 Mhz RAM

I must point out that for those who have this laptop and its similar variants, they can reduce the temperatures by means of trottlestop, doing a bios downgrade, since the latest version does not allow modifying the voltages and the tdp, due to the vulnerability of Plundervolt !!! In my case, I downgraded the back flash from the bios version e9cn60ww to the lenovo 7i e9cn33ww, being able to later use trottlestop or xtu in windows 10, managing to modify the undervoltage and tdp of the i7 10750h, considerably reducing temperatures !!! I hope this information is useful! greetings to all ...

Note that the 7i model with i7-10750h and RTX2060 does NOT come with vapor chamber cooling system (i have the same model and i can confirm it) , but heat pipes instead which is NOT mentioned anyway in the product page. @@OWNORDISOWN You mentioned how much the nits is reduced if you turn it down to 75% to save on battery life. Is it possible to turn it down by a lower percentage instead of 25%? So if you turn it down by say 12% it would be about 350nits?

@@MrPineappleHero I don't have the time to measure at 10% or less increments. What you can do is turn it into a curve by joing the center of each bar together and then extrapolating the 90% brightness across and then down to see what the nits would be. That would be a good approximation. I no longer have the laptop

Spam/hold F2 to enter BIOS. To enable undervolting: advanced>overclocking performance menu>enable overclocking feature>enable XTU interface

Also, there might be a battery drain issue while Hybrid mode is on. To solve it, go to msconfig, disable Corsair Service and restart (not Corsair LLA service). This shouldn't affect iCUE from working. For better battery life, can close iCUE as it drains about 1W CPU power.

This is the kind of gaming display I have been waiting for! No one yet has reviewed the 240hz 1ms 500 nit panel. I guess only the 144hz G-sync has the 100% Adobe RGB though. Lenovo made a very compelling laptop this year. Most they can do from here is just further increase the battery to 90+ whr.

I did a price match on the 7i with 10750 and 2060 (500 nits) and paid $1200 for laptop, 200$ for accident protection / extended warranty, and got reward points and 8% cash back from rakuten. Total was like $1380 after all that and tax. Insane deal. It will be here later this week

They literally fixed every issue I have with my y740! Wow. I love the performance and look of my Y740 but don't like the keyboard for long typing sessions, the small track pad, heavy ass power brick or, webcam placement. After seeing this, I'm definitely selling my y740 and getting the 7i. Thanks for the review.

Thank you for touching on the screen as much as you did with this laptop, most reviews focus on the thermals. I also bought an MSI GE66 recently and was looking to replace it with this one because of the horrible display, you the nail right on the head.

Fantastic review as always, I have just bought the i710750, RTX2070 super, 240hz version of this laptop and I can’t wait to get it, just a shame the estimated time is 4 - 5 weeks on Lenovo’s site. I’m now thinking of contacting them to change the CPU to the i7 8 core variant. Do you think that this would be a worthwhile upgrade for CPU heavy tasks? Also after watching the video I’m considering changing the screen to the 144hz variant to support advanced optimus.

The advance optimus had some driver issues along with the hdr feature that this panel supports. Hope nv and Lenovo get it fixed for the further bios updates.

Hi, What bout the advanced Optimus technology. Only 300 nits panels have that or that depends on RTX card like only Max-q cards have that technology. I am planning to go to RTX 2060. What will be the Power Limit forRTX 2060 and RTX 2070 Legion 7i models?

Only the 300nits panel has Advanced Optimus. Power limits are complicated in 7i so it's best not to learn about it, otherwise you'll be confused.

@@killerra I never said it was the best. I actually think the Mech 15 G3 is better. Just so you know, this 2080 MQ can pull upto 106w in some titles so that's not far off the 115w on the 2070 MP. My main complaint on the 2080 super MQ is the price premium over the 2070 MP super when performance is quite close.

Wow really thinking this is the leader of the new wave of laptops. I love the super bright screen it makes all the competitors look so undesirable in comparison. fast 32 gb ram, top notch cooling, i love the minimal aesthetic but with the aggressive RGB that can be toggled. I'm very curious to hear what other laptops are competing in brightness, I'm back in the market and am quite sad about the GS66 240 lackluster screen. 300hz just seems ludicrous and I'm sure that comes at a NIT trade off.

I agree, the screen was great. By itself, the GE66 screen looks good but next to this Legion 7i panel there was no comparison. Games like Overwatch that use lots of colour just popped on the Legion 7. The XPS 15 has a 500 nit panel too I believe.

OWNorDisown I’ve been impressed with 7is 90 watt boosts and 60-70 watt continual loads on the 10875 they knocked it out of the park on cooling. I’m going to buy it for editing I think.

Thanks for the wonderful review! Just picked this laptop up after watching and reading a few other reviews. Got basically the same configuration you showed but increased ram to 32GB and got a second 1tb ssd. Currently have an MSI GS63 stealth that is slowly falling apart due to heavy use in college, can't wait for the upgrade. The 7i really does seem like the best premium gaming laptop out there atm. Going to be a long 4 weeks till it gets delivered.

Great review as always Stephen! I don't get why manufacturers make adjusting brightness so bad. I mean 485 nits at full brightness vs 86 nits at 50% is just ridiculus. I also noticed you mentioned the GE66, are you planning to do a review on it too? Been really interested in that laptop.

Is there any way to disable to rainbow RGB on startup? I have to turn it off using FN+down however it will not memorize this setting so the RGB is back on the next bootup.

It must be biggest fans by diameter, plus new technology of blades, plus vapor chamber, plus excellent fan curve. I love this laptop already by its cooling only, and that’s not all, 100% adobe rgb display with Gwyc 500 nit, nice case, proper keyboard layout with number block. It is the winner among razer 15, m15 r3, Msi 66 series. This is a breakthrough of Lenovo. The only drawback is the lack of 4800H.

Thanks for another awesome review! There is one problem with this laptop though - the vapor chamber, as said by Lenovo themselves is very fragile and it's not recommended to do repasting yourself, which is a huge downside in my opinion, plus lack of undervolting like you said. Otherwise a good laptop!

Nice! They actually fixed the horrible keyboard placement from the last generation lol. I wanted one but knew I'd HATE the macro keys location. Moved the webcam too and added a bigger battery. can confirm the cash back and im gonna be honest. the 4k panel is nice but on a portable system it is harder to notice, harder to power, and most games can’t reach that frame rate and resolution simultaneousl. the omen is a very good option though

Yes until you turn on Ray tracing on upcoming AAA titles with Ray tracing. You'll need ampere/RDNA 2 gpus to handle the significantly more demanding Ray tracing in upcoming titles. For example watch dogs legion with Ray tracing brings a 2080 ti down to less than 60fps at 1080p and that's with DLSS 2.0 enabled.

Please do a comparison video on the Lenovo Legion 5/5i VS the HP omen 15 (2020) I think both of these laptops are the most "bang for the buck" with massively effective cooling solution, performance and battery life. However there are subtle differences which will suite different buyers and I'm one of them. So a side-by-side comparison will be extremely helpful for mid-range buyers in 2020.

I'm actually curious, and I have YET to see a solid side by side on this, if the stock 2070 is really going to perform on par with a 2070 SUPER Max Q in this device. Thermals seem to allow the stock 2070 to juice up a bit to compete with the SUPER variant. It's quite higher priced on their website which makes we wonder if sticking with stock 2070 is actually the best move here. I don't really see a need for the 2070 SUPER to even be MAX Q

I don't see where the 7i is configurable with the 115w 2070. Certainly that GPU and the 2070 super max Q are very close according to Techspot. In my testing the 2070 super max Q was about 4% behind the 2080 super max Q but if you had a system that pushes more watts to it like the Mech 15 G3 then overlooking helps it more than the 2070 super 115w. @@ScurvyMcGruff Can you imagine Lenovo could not get an proper answer from UPS? As of yesterday, no reply from UPS yet. So Lenovo gave UPS till today to reply. I was told by the Lenovo customer rep who called me that there are few other customers who were affected too. Probably the same shipment by UPS. So yes, thats how bad is UPS. My has no update since 15 July 2020 and UPS has the gut to roll back the shipping progress bar from about 80% to 50% and removed the estimated delivery date. I guessed UPS could not provide an answer because they lost the entire shipment. I am demanding lenovo to re-issue a new laptop to me.

My company did an advertisement video for 7i so I get a chance to see and touch the laptop before it release. But too bad I was so busy working on their video so I didn't tested it's performance.

Hello sir last year I watched your Lenovo Legion Y740 review and purchased the Y740 i7-9th gen with rtx 2070 MQ model and was planning to use that laptop for like 3-4 years. But this year Lenovo launched 7i which is much better. Did I make a bad choice!! 🙂

You’ll get more bang for buck with max 17. Lenovo is slightly more expensive for the cost. But it’s all round good machine. Example. Max 17 has better horsepower for cost. Legion 7i has prettier display.

If you want actual performance, the Max 17 with an RTX 2070 Super Max-P is the way to go. Max-Q GPUs are not worth the money.

Getting a message from X-rite color assistant that it will not work with HDR enabled? So you can have a calibrated screen but not use HDR which is a benefit for some screens?

There is a 240Hz, 500 nits option, but for some weird reason it can only be optioned together with the 10750H CPU at the moment. Not sure why.

Clicking and eventually breaking. Only 7i suffers from it apparently. 5i has metal rails all along the hinge but on 7i the hinge is screwed to a metal plate which is just glued. Opening and closing causes stress and eventually it comes off.. im sure its a small number of cases but the QC is probably no good and never know it can happen to you. Lots of posts on legion hinge on r/gaminglaptops subreddit Had one today same issue

Hey stephen, Just a quick question. Can the retailer tamper with the CUDA cores in the GPU of any laptop? Because i heard buying laptops online may lead to the risk of reduction of CUDA cores in order to reduce the price of the laptop.

Hi there, no, they cannot do that. There are different GPU models that have different number of cores. Are you thinking more of the wattage? Nvidia make different wattage SKUs such as the 2060 now can be had in 80w, 90w and 115w versions.

@@saiteja5566 yep, for the 2060 and the max Q versions and most frustrating is that the manufacturers usually dont tell you what version you get either..that's what I always show the GPU wattage in my gameplay 😀👍

you can undervolt especially with the latest bios...just need to enable the advanced bios and enable XTU....

A heads up for those who may have ordered a G-Sync system. My system ordered with G-Sync did not show the appropriate options for G-Sync and tech support just confirmed my system does not have it even though that is how it was ordered. This is a disappointing start for my first Lenovo and I am not sure someone without a technical background would know how to check for this and just think it is there because they paid for it. I was running benchmarks which didn't make sense and started to look into this further when I discovered G-Sync was not available in the Nvidia Control Panel! Buyer beware and make sure everything you pay for and order is present on your system.

@@El-Jefe Hi, CPU i7-10875H, 15.6 FHD 144Hz G-Sync, RTX-2080 Super, 32 GB RAM, Purchased and spec'd as a G-Sync system. Tech Support confirmed it should be a G-Sync system. They offered a replacement but it would not arrive until the end of November so I just returned the system and will see what happens for Black Friday or when the newer processors come out.

Great review. I have been using a Y740 for a while now and my only issues are the short battery time and the power brick size (and the keyboard placement with those extra keys on the left). Would anyone know if I could use the 7i power brick with the Y740?

Legion 7i has good bass. You used to review Strix Hero 2. Between this 2 , which one more bass? I dislike using headphone. Not coordinated between what I see far ahead on the screen but sound too near in my ear.

I am planning on getting the 7i 10750H, RTX 2070M-Q Version Steve, should I go for it? Does the frame rate changes significantly while dropping down from 2080 S-M-Q to 2070M-Q? Like Can I expect a difference of ~30 FPS during this leap? I really want it for gaming and also im on a budget

@@cornerxstone oh yes, definitely. I loved the screen on the Legion 7i. Not that the GE66 screen is bad, it's not, but having the two side by side made me appreciate the 500nit panel for sure.

How do you manage to get 6h of battery life? I have my legion 7i on hybrid mode, g sync turned off also refresh rate set to 60hz on nvidia control panel. I've have set optimus off cause i see no difference in battery life when de iGPU is running under light tasks and also cant change the refresh rate directly from Intel's command center. Please helppp
