I agree, I don't like the keyboard layout at this with the squished numpad. I would prefer a centered qwerty keyboard. A USB numpad is less than $20 on Amazon if it's really needed.
A really nice looking machine. I'm gonna get one to use as a Linux workstation. Good deals on the 4060 model right now (it's pretty basic - just white backlighting etc...). I love the fact one of the USB-C ports is wired to the iGPU instead of the dGPU - this allows you to run an external monitor without having to power on the dGPU. I hear so many good things about the Zen 4 architecture, I just gotta get me one of these bad boys 😉
As long as HW support has been baked into the distro you're considering, you should have a great experience. Graphics switching support was an issue in Linux for a while. If you use Ubuntu or PopOS (Ubuntu-based) you should be able to avoid any such issues. Try it out and report back!
@@techknowlux Thanks! Yeah, Jerrad did a review of this machine on his channel, and he spent a minute showing it working with a Live CD. Everything worked fine, although he didn't get down into the nitty gritty of GPU switching etc... I have an old 5th gen Legion 5, and a 7th gen Legion 7, and GPU management/switching works great on both of these machines (with Arch Linux). RTD3 (Runtime D3) even works on my Legion 7 😄When I completely power off the discrete GPU, I get around 7 or 8 hours of light use (browsing, emailing, terminal, compiling some code, Slack/Signal messaging, RU-vid etc etc etc). I absolutely love the Legion line. Anyway, thanks so much for the review, really enjoyed it.

I've had a Macbook Air, Macbook Pro 14", all relatively new devices for my editing projects. I have got to say that after picking this laptop up on sale at best buy, it has speed, power, its quick, and lenovo does a great job on not having a ton of Bloatware like these other companies. Truly satisfied with this purchase, might be one of the best gaming/work laptops i've ever owned on par with the Macbook Pro 14".
also it actually feels slim. its not if you measure it, but holding this compared to my previous gaming laptops, it has a great feel to it. LENOVO did a great job with this machine 👍
I think for the first time in the years since the days of the Geforce 980M I can wholeheartedly say that anyone that most people will pick up a laptop like this, particularly the Legion Slim 7 or Legion Slim 7 with a RTX 4060 and absolutely love it. They're built so well for the price, well equipped and overall an excellent value. I was very impressed with this device. And, it shows considering it's the most popular review on my channel thus far this year. I do love the Macs though, but they're for a different audience. For an all around do anything laptop - including gaming, a Windows device still fares much better and are often cheaper than even the entry level Macbook Pros.
Quiet mode gaming is probably the most impressive thing about this hardware. I have this same pc in Slim 7 guise (7840HS/4060). My old legion (10750h/2070s) can get close to it in some games without fg obviously. The issue is that it's screaming to achieve what this can on silent mode lol. The only issue I'm having with it is sometimes the dGPU will stay ON apparently as I can't always get power draw below 25w. When it chooses to disengage as it's supposed to, I can get power draw down to sub 10w.
And difference between high and ultra is miniscule. doing a mixed custom setting would push all these games over 80-100 FPS I'm certain. Good review :) thanks!! @@techknowlux

I have a Lenovo Legion 5i from 2022 with an i7 12700H & RTX3070ti@140W. The one thing I LOVE about Legion laptops is the fact that there are ports at the back and since I always keep my external keyboard and mouse plugged in, the back ports help me tremendously with keeping my desk looking clean.
I really like this feature about the Lenovo laptops as well. Some of the Dell and Alienware laptops also offer this. There are also a few options from Gigabyte that also have the heavier cable ports on the back now.

Great video man, just in time I'm considering buying this laptop but looking at the 1600p gaming performance make me a bit hesitant. How's the screen look like if you if you turn down the resolution to 1200p is it blurry? I think the 1600p is a bit too intensive for the upcoming games like Starfield.
Turning the screen down from the native resolution introduces dithering which is the laptop trying to use 3 pixels to display one pixel since the resolution has been lowered. It's not aweful, but I would not recommend it. If you're worried about the performance you can always play on medium. I'm not sure if DLSS3 or Frame Generation will be supported but that would be a great way to get another boost. It's an RPG so 60fps should be very playable and enjoyable.

They both are almost equal, if difference in price is minimal go with Intel if you looking for productive stuff. Still do note again, Intel is about just 1-3% better which also depends on the work, single thread ryzen is better and efficient.
Very good review! Thank you for making this video. Only thing I wish you did would be to add/callout a few other scores from prominent laptops like razor, or the Asus G14 in the 'Benchmarks' section so there's some kind of frame of reference.
Ryzen vs Ryzen is a bigger jump. They've really taken things up a notch. Realistically you won't notice much in day-to-day use. But heavy tasks and sustained tasks it will begin to show. And of course in the benchmarks. Expect between 15-25% range depending on the task.
I just bought this for $1200 Canadians or ~$900 USD. I wanted the slim 7i but that was way more expensive for the same specs. It was hard to justify 800+ just for some aluminum, a brighter screen an slightly thinner chassis
Well done! That $800 will get you some nice upgrades and memberships to Xbox game pass, Ubisoft pass, EA pass and then some! You'll have no shortage of games to actually enjoy.
3:28 I'm amazed, my 2021 legion 5 with RTX 3070 and 5800h gets 28,904 graphics 25,065 CPU and 12,508 combined in firestike, good to see that I won't gain anything by "upgrading" to this years laptop
You don't "need" to upgrade this year. It's more about staying current. But the 5800H and the 3070 will last you quite a while both CPU and GPU power wise. Save some dough and get some more fun game to play!
What is the best way to use both integrated graphics 780M and the GTX 4060 at the same time to maximize graphical performance? Wouldn't the amazing 780M iGPU be a waste when all of the graphic processing is done with the GTX 4060?
not an expert but think of it like this, each gpu is a car and your cpu is a single road, the more cars try to fit to it the higher the traffic, computation wise i don't think we are as efficient yet to split jobs between different gpu architectures so that workload is shared, at least for games, afaik for desktop and some apps is supported through optimus.
For normal task and even light gaming use780M iGPU - and you get better battery life. When you need gaming USE RTX, or some blender rendering - use both.
It should be within 10-20% performance of this laptop. Although I think 8 cores has established itself as a base across computing devices now. Pretty much all of the smartphones are operating with 8 cores. And 8 cores gives you enough power for multi-tasking if streaming, recording while gaming as well without performance bottlenecks. The price difference will be quite negligible too. However, if you're a casual gamer and need a do-it-all-device saving a few bucks will not harm your long term prospects in gaming as long as you set your expectations correctly.
7640hs equals an i5 13500h. I'd say unless you do programming, music production or anything that will use all threads you won't miss out on anything by going with the R5. Most people cannot make use of current I5's let alone higher tier chips.
I have the 2024 version which is essentially identical other than brighter eDP ips screen. Only complaint, only one is speaker volume. It comes with open slot for pcie 4x ssd, and two dimm slots. Taking the bottom panel off only required small philips, and no pry tools. It would be nice if it had brighter rgb per key kb but thats it. Love it for the money... screen is excellent.

this thing is almost 1400 euro's here in belgium , and seeing the performance i'm actually not convinced , i would have rather seen a decent 1080 p screen on these , instead of this higher res screen with a 4060 , the 1080p screen they have on offer is really bad unfortunatly
Different regions get some horrible configurations. I do not understand why this is the case since most of the devices are manufactured in China. But maybe I'm wrong and there are assembly plants in Europe. Not too sure. But 1400 EUR seems steep. This should be no more than 1200 EUR maximum.
@agentfortyseven9048 I would not recommend buying a 3070 if you're going to be playing games and plan on keeping the laptop for any length of time. Especially if you're more than an occasional gamer. The RTX 4000 series has DLSS3 and Frame Generation support. Two very big reasons to get the Slim 5. So my recommendation is hands down the Legion Slim 5.
@wanchana555 Sounds a bit pricey to me. Only 16GB of RAM and only 512GB SSD and that with only an RTX 4060. Compare against the other brands right now and if similar specs is at or above this price, then buy this one.

Hi,@@divitsingh55 . 2 months ago I purchased an Acer Predator Helios Neo 16 on an RTX 4050. I am pleased with this laptop: clear screen, brightness, external feel. In terms of temperatures, the video card is on average 80-85 degrees and the processor is about 80 under long-term load (I think this is quite normal temperature for a mid-low segment laptop) in heavy games (I play The Witcher 3). Still, the Lenovo laptop is thinner, has a metal body, which means the cooling system is less efficient. Therefore, I could recommend you a laptop from Acer.

Months later but i do have a question. I just picked up the legion slim 5 16gb Ryzen 7-7840 RTX 4060. And it says the Ram is Soldered, but i am hearing it has Dual Sockets, are BOTH 8 gb soldered, or Only 1 allowing me to upgrade the Second ? Sorry if this is a stupid question.. it is my first Laptop in about a decade.

@@techknowlux i did a bit of searching, and there are 2 versions. The newer version on Best buys site has " Upgradeable " ram. There is also Another Seperate Sku for $1000, that has Soldered 16. You can Only upgrade it to 32gb as a Custom build through lenovo. Thankfully i only need 16 for what i plan on using it for. So i was able to save $500
it not like that the there are two models available dor slim 5 one is 14inch oled and other 16inch ips . the 14inch have soldered ram and 16 inch have both upgradable ram

Yes. The 4060 is a decent choice. Modern CPUs will have more than enoigh power. If you were working professionally I would suggest 4080 but as a student the 4060 will serve you well.
@zdzisiutaranaga4538 I don't believe they use liquid metal. ASUS has been the one that's heavily marketing it. Also some Alienware models use a customized version of it called Element 31. I don't believe Lenovo uses it, at least on the non-pro lines. As for the warranty question, you should check with Lenovo directly.
The display part is very underwhelming. I mean, how is the picture like? Contrast, viewing angles, brightness, colors? Btw, the 60 fps refresh when u plugged is BS..
The screen is very decent. With 100% sRGB coverage there's no reason to complain. But, the contrast and overall brightness of course could be improved. An OLED screen would bump up the contrast but suffers from low brightness. So it's a case of pick your poison. It switches to 60hz when you unplug to conserve battery, but you can manually go into Display settings and crank it back up.

@user-fm7sj8rb3t I no longer have this laptop for testing sorry. DLSS will undoubtedly give you better results than the native rendering. The result can be anywhere from 10-50% more performance!

7840HS , the ULTIMATE CPU😍, 4nm efficency KING. 2X than intel , 8 core FASTER than 14 core 13700H .gives almost same performance of a 16 core 13700HX IN CINEBENCH R23.
Yes battery life, where it counts, has not improved significantly because power usage across all CPUs this generation has gone up to boast about very high 5GHz+ clock speeds.

@user-zv5ck8lb6q Yes they do. But the easy answer to that is to push the laptop back from you a few inches and that problem is solved. Depending on where you live and if it's too hot, the extra hot air on your hands could be a bad experience.

7:08 Lenovo does keep the illuminated icons in legion slim 7. BTW with same CPU and GPU specs, Slim 5 is even more expensive than slim pro 7 here in Germany, which is kinda confusing to say the least. Other than that, there's no upgrade to 4070 for slim pro 7 on their website, whereas it's possible for slim 5. Not that I care about that overpriced performance boost considering power and voltage limit to 4060 and 4070, their decision for laptops in slim lineup is really messed up
Lenovo's marketing and websites and deals are a mess. Not to mention that 90% of their laptops reuse the same keyboard (if not parts, then at least the actual layout). That's why they can pump out so many similar models and flood the market. *Rant over*. That said the voltage limit makes it a moot point to even consider the 4060 vs the 4070. Get the cheaper one honestly and you'll be happy unless you're picky about speciic details or have 4000 EUR to blow on a Legion 9i.
@@techknowlux4000 Euro for a laptop is wild💀 I ordered Legion Slim 7 last Friday with the cheapest configuration except the RGB keyboard. Roughly 1500€ with battery replacement service, plus 180€ more for extra RAM and SSD from Amazon. Honestly I daily drive a m1 MacBook pro right now. The reason for the recent purchase is that I have university projects this coming semester that I can no longer do myself remotely at home. I've also encountered several extremely annoying compatibility issues(caused by arm architecture) on my MacBook pro that would cost me so much time to fix them. RDNA 3 performance seems enough for me to go through lectures and team work with fellow postgraduates. I'd only need a dedicated GPU when I use CUDA to parallelize my code or Pytorch/ TensorFlow. Larger projects will be run on cloud services anyway. And of course some gaming when I have time😇. Hopefully 4870hs+4060 combo will suffice
Try it. Most budget oriented laptops can do 32GB. But 64GB is still more limited. Check the official specifications from Lenovo website as well for the specific model.

Don't do it man! At lower than the native resolution the screen looks blurry. Because you're not mapping 1 to 1 pixesl per pixel. How bad it looks is very subjective and up to you to decide. That's why I always, always test at the native resolution of the display. It's better to play on Medium or High and lower the quality preset than to change to a lower resolution. If you really want to target 1080p then look for a device that has a native 1920x1080 or 1920x1200 panel.
@@techknowlux I saw a IdeaPad 5 pro with a 2.8k display , same resolution. Indeed it didn't look great... That was a different panel for sure and was hoping the scaling is a bit better on this particular model. Thanks for the info !

Sounds like you have a use case for it and could benefit from more graphics horsepower. The Slim 5 tops out at RTX 4060 (there may be a 4070 model available in certain channels and regions). If you need more horsepower, then the Legion Pro 5i is the way to go.

Lenovo removed it I think because they just release the Slim 7 Gen 8 AMd version. You can still buy places like Best Buy, just gotta wait to be on sae again.
@robi6713 Absolutely. This laptop is a great value and best buy for all around use including gaming. And yes it can be upgraded, the RAM and the SSD. To save a few more bucks make sure you get in on a good deal. Retail prices for all laptops this year and last year are far too high.

The default TDP is 35-54w, so this is indeed an OC UV capable chip. You have to use Universal x86 Tuning Utility, similar to XTU. I'd strongly advise to UV this CPU as it will be even more efficient and will have higher top end performance. Something is wrong with your geekbench6 scores, you have forgot to set Windows to best performance. Otherwise an excellent review!
i have the same model and haven't been able to get UXTU to work for overclocking as yet, CPU power draw sticks at 31 watts in cinebench under full load
