I've always wanted to try powering my canoe with a solar panel/trolling motor, the Lensun folding panel is perfect for the job- lightweight, low profile and efficient.
Link to this panel and mppt controller- www.lensunsolar.com/Foldable-s...

That's a bloody good pace, a steady 7kph. Much better than I could maintain for long. Thanks ever so much. I've been considering this sort of rig for my own canoe for years. (Central North Carolina NC. Mostly shallow reservoirs and swamps here)

.... A canoe I made a few years ago... Love how Marty just drops something in like he made a canoe. Sort of thing that some youtubers would make an hour long video of on that alone. Bloody 1 man Kiwi A Team.!

Fantastic. Of course dealing with the whole setup in fine weather is optimum. In inclement weather would probably be a lot more difficult.

you wouldn't do any canoe stuff in choppy Waters to begin with. I was most in awe of the silence. The problem with ICEpowered boats is the noise pollution across entire bodies of water.

I'm all for more electric stuff! Maybe convert one of those numerous ATVs to zip around your property in silent stealth mode. I love the will-it-run stuff, don't get me wrong. I'm 40, son of lofty whats-Oil/Water-oh-shit-the-car-died parents, living in the big city, never having owned a car or ICEvehicle (I do drive rentals on occasion) but thanks to Marty I now know my way around decade old tractors, outboards and the likes. Don't think I'll ever use this knowledge acquired during lockdown but I certainly feel more manly for it ; )

Did you try running the motor without the battery as backup? That's the test I'd have love to have seen. 200w at 12 (or more) volts is only about 16amps, and even small electric/trolling motors usually take more than that. RichE San Diego, CA

I was thinking the same thing - direct from panels to trolling motor. While it's a year later, it still might be fun to see. I really enjoy this channel and Marty's "can do" with what's at hand attitude. He's living a life that many of us would love to live. In the end, we're all very fortunate no matter our location to enjoy this incredible world.

@@MartyT I figured that. Maybe you fould order some? We could ship you some from Newfoundland. They weren't native to the 'Rock', and in the early 1900's, the Ministry of Natural Resources decided that maybe they should be and released 4 into the sea along the coast. There are way, way too many now - maybe we could capture and release a few along your coast so you could find the raw material necessary to make a 'proper' seat for your canoe? Their flesh is good eatting, as long as you don't harvest a bull during the rut? Sorry, I just had to say something about that seat. Actually, I'm in my sixties now and that seat looks like it would be a whole lot more comfortable than the 'right' on in my canoe. But I wouldn't dare make such a change as I would be laughed right off the river! Thanks for the info on the panel. I've been researching before I purchase one for myself.

@dextersxxxxlab
@dextersxxxxlab 5 лет назад
Nice panel. But to do a good test you need to see what the panel is putting out and what the motor is using. This panel is 200 w but probably will put out 18 to 20 volts? the battery will charge with maybe 14 volts and a cheap pwm solar charger will through away the exces voltage. so 6 volts are wasted. lets say it will put out 10 amps at 20 volts in full sunlight. 10x20=200 watts. but the cheap pwm will just through out 6 volts. 14x10 amp= 140 watts that you use. 60 watts wasted. A mppt charge controller is more expensive but will convert the exces voltage of 6 volts into extra amps. so it will charge also at 14 volts but now with 14 amps (it will be a bit less, converting will make you loose some watts to heat. but in the ideal world 14vx14.28 amps=200 watts. You have a clamp on amp meter. put it over the motor wire and over the charge wire and measure the voltage when under charge. now you can see in numbers what is happening. We use a 100 watt semi flex panel in the boat. we have a 19ft maxum sports cuddy. we use it for wakeboarding etc. But also for camping trips to a nearby nature reserve. we use a normal 12v peltier driven car fridge. and the panel will put out 5,5 amps in bright sun and the fridge will use 4,2 amps. we have an extra 12v 50 amp car battery that we use with the solar as soon we are at anchor. fridge will run all day (we only go with good weather so a lot of sun) and battery will stay full. and in the evening without sun (in summer on the water we can catch the sun until 9 or so and still have enough to keep it full. we put the panel direct to the sun. it can be on the top and on the side and on the back the front. under any angle. always optimum exposure. and after the sun went down we run it for like half an hour every hour. at night it is off but the temp went down also and the mass inside will help to stay relative cool. And the first to get up will put it on power and the circel is closed. it is such a treat to be on the boat in 30 to 40 degrees celcius and have cold drinks and keep meat and salad fresh. just a 1 x 0.5mtr 100w solar panel. i use a pwm solar charger wit a display that will show you the voltage and amps in and amps out in one view. great unit.
