I saw Jones and Rysanek (and Voigt) perform these roles at the Met. The public couldn’t even applaud for a moment, we were too shocked. Then a roar went up, one of greatest ovations I’ve ever heard.
Yes, I saw their Electra twice in same run at the Met. Both performances weren't just theater experiences, but, monumental contributions to one's life. Yes, the audiences needed to recover before reacting with applause. Jones' Turandots were as incredible. Rysanek's departure from the stage was a singular loss.
Jones & Rysanek had chemistry together on stage. I saw them many times in "Elektra" and I was always on the edge of sheer madness. This is why people go to the opera - it´s not about the superb quality of a recording but the live experience of human beings creating something artistic. And Jones` ending with "Was bluten muss?" is out of this world. But the laughteris not the real one from this performance. It has been added.
This is art at its highest standard. They are electrifying here. I wonder if modern singers have ever seen this video. It is a true lesson on how to perform Strauss' incredibly difficult music.
This entire scene is insane and frightening. The gestures and face incredibly effective. The vocals have their issues of course yet this must have been riveting live.

I can hear the laughter in the orchestral writing. When Jones was "on," she was legendary inspite of occasional pitchiness. Loved the mane of white hair!
Tremenda! I saw Jones sing Elektra twice in NY with Rysanek in about 1990 and lost my mind….. this finds them in fabulous voice and free and full of terrifying expression. Superb! Two utterly unique and collossal voices… never before and never again. (Recorded laughter…. Not Leonie. Who cares?) Some of her notes sound like a tenor. Jones….. truly awe-inspiring.
