Funny enough, in circle track racing we actually do completely remove gears we will not use for the weight savings, small as they may be (at least most of us aren't stubborn enough not to run a friggen starter though)

One day James has to let us meet the group or guy that taught him along the way. My dad and Peter Senchuck will forever have my respect for their patience teaching and explaining. I got selected to do a speech for being the 1st person to graduate through a new tech school in Canada. I invited him and did the entire speech about him..... James in his lifetime will do the same, look at where cooper and Garret are through positive reinforcement. I am one of those old guys, brings me almost to tears teaching someone like James and watching them teach others. Proud dad moment !

*@**20:21* *MAJOR FAULT* You're not supposed to ever "hot tank" cast aluminum parts. The "hot" also refers to the cleaning agent being *_caustic_* Especially transmission casings- Manufacturers coat the outside with a special clear dip. You have now removed the baked in coating, resulting in the case having porous areas, and possibly weaker spots, too. Just watch for fluid seepage from the case. The darker patches are where the aluminium has been chemically burned (aluminium oxide) and the whitish powder is _alumina_ oxide. For everyone else- Mineral Spirits, kerosene, brake parts cleaner, soap & water. Nylon brushes, brass bristles at the most.

That chewed up gear isn't 4th, it's the countershaft input gear. Every gear EXCEPT 4th transfers power through that gear. 4th is the actual input shaft coupled to the output shaft via the shift collar synchro at the front of the trans.

@J-Edgar Hughes Affirmative. Most standard trans are 1:1 4th. If it's a 3 speed, then 3rd is 1:1. Because 1:1 is a "free" gear, you are not likely to come across a standard that doesn't have it. It also helps you limp home when you blow up the trans :-)

That was a really nice interesting video. The side by side gear sprockets, shows just how much damage had occurred, and loved the deconstruction and reconstruction of it was really cool to watch.

Nice doing James and Cleetus, this episode brought some good and not so good memories when I seized a gear on the main shaft of my Muncie 4 speed, it took 20 tons of pressure to release it. Thanks a lot for the trip back in time. Go for mid 7 now Leroy! You can do it!

Thank you so much for taking us along. I'm sure there are many people that, like you, that was afraid to tear into the T-56 Corvette trans. OH, and by the way, the Corvette is pretty much like any other T-56 trans except it's kept in the rear of the car. Sweet better balance. I'm using a Corvette automatic transaxle for my custom Roadster build. Except I'm using a good engine. A FORD Coyote from a wrecked 2019 Mustang GT. It should be a killer on a road course. finished it should weigh in around 2600 lbs. 2800 with me in it. The other doner car is a 1994 Mazda MX-5 Miata. We are doing so much body customization that no one will be able to tell it was ever an MX-5. I'm about 2/3's of the way to finish. When It's finished I'll send pictures. I' in Greeley, Colorado. Love your show.
