Les Miserables movie review

I've never been a "musical fan", but I've always been able to reasonably enjoy them if they are done well when I've seen them and I haven't seen that many. I never expected this movie to do what it did to me. This movie moved me in ways I never have been moved by a movie before. I understand that some people didn't like it, but in all honesty this movie made me cry pretty hard in multiple scenes and that never happens to me. Any movie that does that to me is special, and it's one of my all time favorites now.

The chick he mentions is Samantha Barks, and is an incredible actress! She was supposed to be in Dracula Untold, but her scenes were cut (dodged that bullet).

I don't care what anyone says, Russell Crowe did an amazing job singing "Stars"

Anne Hathaway singing I Dreamed a Dream is awe-inspiring. That whole one-shot hits sooo hard and she gives an amazing performance

I had tears streaming down my face at the end of this movie...I can honestly say that's the first film to have ever done that to me. I never cry at films!

Actually, Russell Crowe's songs were some of my favourite parts, like the confrontation, stars, and Javert's Suicide.

My favorite is actually Les Mis but other than that it's Phantom of the Opera , Wicked , RENT and Next to Normal

The worst part for me is when the Directors name comes on screen, everyone just stares at me

1) Yeah, Anne Hathaway did really great with "I Dreamed a Dream", that was the song in the scene you described. I personally think it's the best one of the entire movie. 2) Samantha Barks is the name of brunette you were talking and yeah, she did really great job with her acting and at the very least decent at singing. Normally I roll my eyes at unrequited love but her true love is depicted clearly and I could really feel her distraught and pain during her song, I even teared up at a certain scene. My only complaint is that she wasn't in as many scenes and didn't have as many interactions with him as I felt she should have.

SAMANTHA BARKS (no, not like a dog)! She plays Eponine, and she's spent her whole career on stage instead of on screen, apart from a British TV competition to get a major part in musical theatre, but I agree that she should do a little more film work. She's talented and hot. Anyway, Hairspray and Mamma Mia were decent, Rent was really good, Phantom of the Opera and Les Miserables I loved. I hope they make Wicked into a movie-musical, because that's my favorite I've seen on stage (along with Lion King, but the animated movie inspired the show). Yentl is pretty good, but I'm going to reach way back and say Funny Face (1957 Audrey Hepburn and Fred Astaire) is my favorite. It's not completely sung through, the songs in it vary from peppy and whimsical to endearing and touching, and it's just an old-fashioned, light-hearted good time.

Whaaat i liked Javert :/ his voice is unique and fit the character. Very nice acting as well..y ppl hatin on him T_T

Maybe not the best example, but "The Nightmare Before Christmas". 20 years old and still timeless.

I remember watching Les Miserables the live musical almost 8 years ago. It was by far the best most touching musical I have ever seen. The visual effects, the singing, the actors where flawless. 8 years later Im driving around melrose, and I see Hugh Jackman, Hathaway, and Crowe in a giant billboard ad. MY HEART STARED POUNDING WITH NOSTALGIA. 1 of the very few movies that had me cryin from beginning to end. This movie truly touches the human spirit.

Here 7 years to the day after Jahn's released this bc: CATS. It was so good bc the actors sang live on set. My favorite movie musicals are CHICAGO, Les Misérables, Godspell, & RENT. ✌💗

The problem with musicals is that people love them BECAUSE their musicals. The problem with les miserables is that it skips the actual story progression and character development in favor of just singing about it and looking fancy. But every time I try to bring this up to my sister, she's like "You don't like Les Mes," as if I'm the bad guy. I love the story idea, and will have to read the book.

Very good critique but i'd like to give you one tiny bit of advice and that is to look into the performers before you talk about them as Samantha Barks who plays Eponine is one of the ACTUAL Eponines from the West End musical "Les Miserables" the 25th anniversary version.

honestly at the times where Crowe HAD to sing (and not just sing-talk) he was actually VERY interesting to listen to. I'm not sure if I like it.. but it certainly is memorable. And hey, I felt for him in the end.

Is anyone else getting annoyed when people praise Ann Hathaway for singing "I dreamed a dream" in one take? Broadway singers do that on a 8 shows a week basis.

It always confused me that Les Miserables is a musical, though technically it should fall under opera because there is little to no dialogue and everything is relayed in song. However I looked it up and apparently it's considered a musical, but it falls under the category of "sung-through". Even after the explanation it still sounds like an opera except with a different name. Is it based on style, presentation? Can someone please explain?

I love musicals and you're right. It was my Utopia. Even more so because when a movie makes me cry, it immediately climbs up to the top of my 'favourite movie' list. And this film made me cry a whole damn lot. So epic.

Dude, saw this today and damn is it good! I didn't actually cry but I came close a couple of times... But seriously, it was pretty incredible, the sets, the music, the singing (which was excellent from everyone btw) and the acting (even russel crowe, though he wasn't brilliant, he still played stoic bad guy really well!)

Samantha barkes is actually in the les miserables stage production at the moment, she is a stage actor.

His performance was pretty much just as good as everyone else's, the facial gestures, formal detective attitude, everything. Amanda Seyfried while not actually having the best performance had the best damn singing voice out of the entire cast XD

Doctor Horrible, hands down, my introduction to the movie included a live-action enactment alongside the screening so the immersion was there in your face, right next to you firing the Freeze Ray.

REPO! The Genetic Opera is a lot of fun. Probably my fave if only for how over the top it is and the music is, well, rock opera. Plus, Sarah Brightman's in it.

I love les miserables and I only watched it on Saturday and I know I may be crazy for saying this but I actually enjoyed, not just tolerated, enjoyed Russell Crowes singing.

When this came out in theaters, I was pretty interested in seeing in. Later bought it on DVD and watched it a million times after that. Loved the movie and had never seen the play or read the book or even heard of this prior to it coming out. However the original art of the little blonde girl did look familiar to me which made me want to see it I guess.

I love les miserables (seen many variations of it). Samantha barks was amazing, her character eponine is by far my favorite character in the story. the characters absence from the 1998 movie version is one of the things I hated about that one.

The Blues Brothers. Not specifically a musical ("Think" and "Jailhouse Rock" are the only songs that have anything to do with the plot), but it is still a movie all about music. It's also awesome.
